Yes, It means that the motor has a hole in the uper part of the cylinder to bleed off compression at the rpm the engine sees at start-up but at higher rpm's it has little effect but you still loose some rpm from it. I plug mine with JB weld and others tap the hole and put a screw in it. Piper

On most of the Homelite weed whacker 25 & 30 engines, there is a little hole above the exhaust port that is used for (EGR) exhaust gas recirculation. Everyone taps the hole slightly and put a short 10-32 set screw in the hole. Don't tap very deep or you will penetrate the cylinder wall and cause some of the Nickasil to flake off around the hole.

On some of these, there is another hole above the intake port that has a 1/8" NPT valve in it. This should be removed and a pipe plug put in the hole. This hole and original valve is the compression release for the electric start versions.

To my knowledge, the Zip Start deal was a different ratio on the pull cord pully that made the pull cord easier to pull?

Enjoy,

Jim

Thanks for the info guys. The box that my homelite bandit saw came in says "ZipStart" on it. I assumed that this applied to the pull-start mechanism itself. If the trimmers have a compression release and an EGR port then how about the saws ?

One RCU member says his 33cc homelite has no port so I'm not going to tear mine apart to look. I've ruled out any special ignition module or flywheel mods.

Apparantly the ZipStart is a special pull start feature that applies to all homelite trimmers and saws.

Thats good enough for me.

Question on a Homelite, hope someone here can stear me in the right direction on this one.I got a 25cc Zip Start engine, when i took off the carb manifold it has several little goodies that my other Homelite doesn't.The first one is a 1/4 inch hole directly beneath the intake port. The second is this rectangular shaped hole with a brass rectangular block above the intake port, it looks to be a key of sorts combined together and seems to be some sort of release mechanism. The next is the manifold itself,it has a 3/8 inch hose running from the top where the release setup is to the bottom of the manifold where the 1/4 inch hole is benath the intake port. Seems to me that this is a Califirnia motor with polution a device built into it.What do i do?Toss the head and get another one or make an aluminum plate and block this stuff off.Shame, this is an engine that looks to be started only once. One other thing, after reading some of the posts on Homelites this might be a 30cc engine,it has no bridge in the exaust port.Anyone run into this before? Thanks,,,Slade

I was wondering if the Zip Start reffered to the choke device. My 30 has a non butterfly fuel enrichment lever which latches on, and releases on increasing the throttle. I removed the latching part for the rc conversion, and so now hold down the lever for 5 priming flips and release for starting, works well. The enrichment jet does take up some room in the venturi though, and I was wondering if I may be loosing a few rpm from the restriction...

Btw, dont remember seeing any extra holes in the 30 head.
