The o15 is a 30cc engine putting out about 2hp according to the old specs. Its easy to get rid of the points and put on one of the solid state conversion kits they sell for lawnmower for about $15. Provided you can get the weight right down and the cost was low I think it would make a pretty good conversion for a cub or stick or something like that. No 3D here.

Hi Sides,
You might want to locktite the roller bearing cage on the thrust end of the crank shaft if it isn't restrained by a shoulder already. The idea is to keep the crankshaft from contacting the case . Some of these roller bearing engines have a brass ring style bearing between the shaft and the roller cage. My Homelite XL's bearing cages aren't restrained allowing the shaft to walk and contact the case. Are these reed valve engines?

Here I am about 6 weeks late answering your question about the 015 Stihl engines.(Better late than never) Yes, these are reed valve engines. Haven't done anything with them as yet as two many irons in the fire. Don't know beans about replacing the points system with a lawn mower solid state system ,but will be trying that.
Anyone have any words of advice on the "HOW TO" of doing the conversion to solid state?

Hi Sides,
If you can get a more modern solid state coil that will fit. That would be the best solution. The conversion kits do the same thing, but add more complexity and cost. Stihl may not have changed the basic coil design. Is the coil mounted on the cylinder? If not you will have to make a bracket anyway, almost any solidstate coil would work with a two magnet flywheel.

The coil is not mounted to the engine - so its back to the "build a bracket" if I stay with the mag. When you said that Stihl may not have changed the basic coil design, I don't understand what option that gives me. Can I get a solid state part to mount with the old coil?

Hi Sides,
Since you have to make a bracket, you could use anybody's coil that works with a two magnet flywheel. Dose the flywheel have two or three magnets? Design a bracket that is nice and stiff so that the magnets won't pull the gap closed. Good luck.
