Default Mac 38cc on a Giant Big Stik

Here are a few pics of my Great Planes Giant Big Stik. I have installed a Mac 38cc conversion engine I got from Scott Ellingson at Brielli Engines. The Mac swings a Dynaflite 18x6 prop at 8000+ RPM. The plane weighs 13.5lbs dry. With a span of 80.5" and a wing area of 1520 sq in I should have more than enough power to do some good sport flying. The Mac 38cc engine weighed 4lbs 5oz.

Thanks

Thanks for the nice comment. I cannot wait until this weekend when I will be flying her for the first time. Wish me look. This is my first big gasser.

Hi,

Please let us know how this project does. I don't know why, as I have a lot of neat projects in the line up already, but I keep thinking about getting one of these Great Planes Giant Sticks and "ARF Bashing" it into a low wing with a gas conversion on it.

Good luck, and you're going to love "gas".

We did a lot of that about 20 years ago when Ugly Stiks were still made by Jenson for .60 engines..Turn the fuse over and put the wing on the bottom, take out most of the dihedral..Worked great with a Kraft or OS .60 on the nose

Looks like fun, I second the keeping us informed. Just took a look at the landing gear, http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...&I=LXKJY4&P=RF

They omit the measurement centerline axle to top mount surface, could you furnish?
Wheel size? and prop clearance for 18" prop with level fuselage?

Good luck!

FWIW: went back to Tower listing for plane and saw this note.
Note-The CG and Elevator throw figures are incorrect in the manual-
the above measurements are correct.

Mike

The ground clearance of the Dyanflite 18x6 prop is only 1" or so. To get that I did not use the wheels that came with the Giant Big stik, but opted to use some 4" WW1 wheels I had from and earlier project. That gave me the ground clearance I needed to use a 18" prop. I like tail dragger's so I built mine that way. You wanted to know about ground clearance with a level fuselage. I believe you must be talking about a trike site up with this plane. If you want to use a tricycle landing gear setup with an 18" prop I am sure you would need larger wheels than the ones that come with the plane.

The note on Tower Hobbies is correct. The cg and servo throws in the manual are wrong. I used the suggested ones that came with the little addendum card in the kit.

Thanks

The pic shows the referred to measurement.

I agree with the trike gear comment. I understand that with 4" wheels using the 18" prop you have 1" prop clearance when the tail has lifted off during takeoff run before liftoff.

No I have not flown it yet. I started having engine problems with getting it to start. I called Scott Ellingson about it and he said the Mac 38 needs to spin at 1400RPM to start. The best I could get out of my Craftsman 18v drill was 900 RPM with a fully charge battery. Scott said I was doing everything right and wanted me to send him the engine. When Scott got the engine he tested it and he was right. Scott has a makitta drill than spins over 1400RPM and the motor started right up. I talked to Scott about this and he has taken it back in trade and with a little extra he is making me a MAC 42cc with EI ignition conversion. This Mac 42cc is really a Poulan 42cc and will have more power and weigh less. I am waiting to get the new engine back from Scott and will be testing it soon.

I just bought a starter from Central Hobbies that I'm pretty happy with. I think it was about $40.00. It is gear reduced and they say it will start a 50cc engine with ease. I haven't tried it on larger engines yet, but it spins my high compression Homelite 30cc over with ease and my Sullivan High Torque wouldn't budge it. www.centralhobbies.com (I bought their "Basic Starter".)

I think you're going to like the Poulan 42...

Good luck,

Hey Jim,

Are you still flying the stingray with the ryobi on it? Are you expecting more umph with the giant stick setup? Just wondering, because I too have been looking at the giant stick.

No sorry to say my Stingray come to a sad ending. The Ryobi is fine and is still running good. I just don'y have a plane for it at the moment. The Mac 38cc engine I got from Scott Ellingson had some trouble with it starting. Scott took the engine back and it seems the Mac 38cc has to spin at 1400rpm to start with the magneto. My craftsman 18v would only spin it at 900RPM. That is more than enough to start the Ryobi it would not start the Mac 38cc. Scott is a great guy and he gave me a total tade in on a Mac 42cc with electronic ignition. Scott says the engine starts by hand flipping it and spins a APC 18x8 prop at 8600 RPM. That is 1400 more RPM than my Ryobi. I just mounted the new Mac 42cc to the Giant Big Stick and she looks great. I had to go the the LHS to pick up a switch for the EI and I plan on starting her this weekend. The weather will not be any good to fly so I will work on it to get it running right when I can get to the field. I will post some more picks and let you know how Scott's new Mac 42cc works out. I think she'll go straight up out of site.

Thanks

I have not gone out to fly the Big Stick yet because the weather has been terrible. It has been raining or just to windy and it is going to rain again this weekend. I'll keep you posted and if I cannot fly this weekend I should be able to start and test the engine. The EI is a lot nicer looking than a CH, but I think it my weigh about an once more. I'll post some picks of the Brillelli 42cc w/ EI tonight.

Brian

Where is Tullahoma, TN? I live in Atoka, TN that is 25 miles north of Memphis.

I'll be looking for your update Jim. Tullahoma is 1/2 way between Chattanooga and Nashville 10 miles west of exit 111 on 124. We have a nice flying site on the Arnold air base. I used to come to Memphis to fly glider contest before they quit having them there. Do you know Brian Thomleson? I have met him a few times. Does your club have Giant Scale fly-ins? I may try to make it over this summer. How about the Memphis Belle? Is it still on? Have a great day. Brian
PS I'm going out today to fly my G26 powered "Big" stick some more. It is too much fun!!.

take some pics of your big sick when you fly her if you can. I'd love to see another Big Stick with a Gasser on it. I have a friend who has a 25cc homie with EI on his and his fly's great. The Millington Barnstormers club still has the Memphis Belle Classic in Oct. and it is still on. We are just in the planning stages right now, but it will be this Oct. If you look at last Months AMA Mag you'll see an article on it on the what going on information pages in the back of the Mag. I had a SE-5a there and they but the wrong name in the artical, but that is OK we all had fun that weekend. I'd love to meet you and your Giant Big Stick. Maybe we could get together your, Dave and myself and fly all three Giant Big Stick gassers together.

I'd love to see you clubs field. Having a paved runway must be really nice.

Just got in from some nice flights on my Big stick. Chilly but lots o fun. Your welcome here at our field anytime. Just bring your AMA card. On airforce property "NO ONE" flys without an AMA card. We do have a paved runway, but it is not the runway for the "real" full scale Airforce ships. Brian
PS.. Sorry I have no way to take pictures to get on the internet.

I also have learned the hard way with regards to these mac 38's I had the self same issues with a powercraft chainsaw which is a carbon copy of the mac 38 chainsaw except they were blue in colour (see photo) I found I could only start mine with a 240v ac domestic drill with a modified starter rubber. bit of a bummer unless the local flying field has a mains supply right next to take off[&o][&o] and here is a piccy of the converted engine its dimensions are excellent but this getting to spin in excess of 1400 rpm is a bit of a bummer....well it is for us in blighty never mind I'll keep looking for engines to mod

I got the Mac 42cc started this weekend and even at idle I know she has much more power than I need. I had a problem with the throttle servo when I got her started so I cut the engine and changed it out. I don't know what happen after that for I never got the engine to started again. I think I was flooding the engine to much. I'll give it another try this Thrusday when I am off of work. I'll be talking to Scott Ellingson to make sure I was doing everything right.

Thanks
