nice place to spend a lifespan.
On the epoxy question we have the same problem,5 gal pails only (finishing resin,not 5 minute)

I found a ferrite transformer that I think is the same size like the one you used. It fits into the holes on the board just like a glove (not OJ glove, though
). Do I make 400 windings or do I use a wire 16.2m as mentioned on this thread before?
Also, is the size of the wire important? I have some 0.13mm wire. Can I use it for the 400 winding coil?

(AWG36) =0.13mm is the half size AWG30 (=0.25mm)

Try to keep the 400 windings, only if your transformer can't handle the volume you can reduce it.

Bigboat: I have a small metal lathe now. Is there any way to make a device to chuck in a lathe to wind coils? I can slow the speed down quite low. Thanks Capt,n

You need a counter on the lathe to count the windings.
The counter can be electronic, but also a mechanic counter will work.

Bigboat, what kind of a tape did you use on the ferrite transformer to insulate between layers and at the end? I tried to find it on the net but couldn't get anything that looks like transformer tape.

Bigboat, first of all, let me take my hat off for you.
It's this kind of things what RC is all about (at least for me): learn, share, and have fun. Not only you save a precious weight, you also improve engine performance. It's wonderful!
I'll see if I can get a gas engine once for all. If the engine it's worth the try, I'll try the CDI conversion, I'm really looking to it.
Just a silly question, is this CDI project the same as this (http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_34..._7/key_/tm.htm)? (Excuse me, I haven't read the whole thread yet).

If taking about the HV-transformer for the spark (we call this the bobine), you need between every layer tape.
The best way to finish this transformer (bobine), put the complete coil into polyester to isolate the winds.
@JCaste - NOP, this one and the other (from JMJ) are a little differend.
This cdi have more options and the software can handle the hardware in a better way.
Not everyone can programm a PIC, but with the exel-sheet everyone can make the right table for his engine.
And not forget.......the hardware will be cheaper in this cdi.....16F84 is hard to get and very expencieve.

Just for the record.
There are two HV coils, one is on the PCB - this one produced about 400 a 600 Volt and don't need any tape.
The other one (bobine) between the PCB and the spark produced about 20.000 Volt and NEED tape between all layers AND the low Voltage (400 - 600 Volt) site who is coming from the PCB.

Bigboat, I understood you very well. I know you were talking about the 'bobine'. In my last post so was I. It is mostly referred to as the 'coil' as in 'ignition coil'. Also, I think that what you call 'bobine' is called in English bobbin but I could be wrong about it.
I have to order every thing from the States. I don't know what kind of tape it is and it wasn't clear on www.mouser.com either. When I wrote them they didn't answer. I know you can't use normal electrical tape. It is too think and the adhesive is not good either. I'm stuck without a tape and would like to know what kind it is so that I can find it on the net and order it.
My ferrite transformers should be here by next week and the week after, I hope, the PIC16.... will arrive too.

I am am working on a 50ccm moped which has a basic CDI ignition system. I was thinking about updating it to include a timing map and your project seems interesting.
Do you think this CDI system can be adapted to a moped? Is it possible to use the existing high voltage system in the moped and just make the timing board? If I have understood it right I should adjust the basic timing to max advance and the timing board will delay the ignition relative to engine rpm.

Can someone help a stupid, please. I downloaded the MikroC for Pic program and copied the two lines from the excel sheet to it. I tired to compile it and I get an error message. What do I have to do to download the lines to the chip? Do I have to compile it and if yes, what do I do about the errors? Why is the program defaulting to this blinking led thing and ignoring my settings? I did downloaded the right program (mikroC), correct?
