NOTE: The strut is installed with the spring in the front of the strut.

You have answered your own question Vic ! this is how it works on this plane ..or until someone can make it work differentially.
I will admit that I have changed one set of legs already but it sure makes you finesse the landing a bit

If you put the springs in the back.... the spring will run in to the air cylinder and damage it.... the springs must go foward!

Here are some pics of my nose wheel strut installation and main gear. Nose housing was a home brew I designed to prevent snaging! It is made out of 1/64 wood soaked in water and then wraped insite the modified laser-cut light-ply nose wheel cover!
so far it works perfect!
The plastic steering should slide when the gear is up and allow the rudders to move. It will not slide when the gear is down and should now steer the nose gear and the rudders.
I used wood screws to mount the main gear and hardened the wood with CA... it is solid that way!
enjoy!

Pete and Rich - You guys are great contibutors to this hobby and to this plane's success. Alex should be paying you both. Thanks a bunch for your help. I kind of had it figured out but since I had not install this kind of gear before, I thought it best I ask before screwing something up. Rich, those pictures are just what the doctor ordered. Can't screw it up now.
BTW - I think my strut is wound backwards. I'll check and let you know. There were a buch of folks who had the gear bent backwards on the Great Planes Lancair kit - so its not out of the question.
Again, thanks to you both....

Rich,
Which set of mains do you have there...? The 101 HD, or the 701? In that last pic, it kinda looks like the retract is drilled to accept oleo legs, and that some sort of bushing is used to size it down to 3/16" wire legs...
I haven't ordered my retracts yet... still contemplating the oleo's... would look kinda cool, but more damage to the plane in case of a mishap.

Rich - I like your nose wheel "box". So far I haven't had any problems but I still have to do the final gear set ups - file the flats etc. Got the tails glued on today. Fins and epoxy rudder bearings next , but the rudders are pretty tight as is.

My rudders were tight at first... but loosened during the first few flights.... the lower epoxy bearing helps a lot!
Here are some cockpit close-ups!

Vic! Here are a couple close ups that I have of the gear install ...not the best but will do ... I have sense cleaned up the wheel bays and fuel proofed them. You ..May... want to reinforce the underside of the main gear mounting blocks with some 1/8" ply ... I found a hair line crack running out to the side from one of the bolt holes after ... ahem... not so light landing... the ply used for the main gear ..in my kit ... was the light ply so I have reinforced the underside on both mains.

Pete: Thanks for the photos and the info...
Rich: I found some axles that will work. Carl Goldberg has a steel axle that sells for $2.79 ea on Tower Hobbies. However, the axle uses a wheel collar. Central Hobbies sells a set of Aluminum axles that sell for $6.75 a pair. These use "C" clips to hold the wheel onto the axle (photo attached).

Thanks Capt G.
It does not get any better than this for help in building a plane. You all are very helpful. As someone stated earlier, anyone can build this plane with the very graphical manual, the CD full of construction photos and the guys here at RCU. I will certainly post pictures of my model as it gets completed. I have the advantage of picking and choosing any or all of the MODs described here.
Thanks again for your help.
