Well Mother Nature is having a laugh at us this weekend, I'm all ready with skis and floats and now we expect temps in the 50's. So much for snow flying this weekend. I'll have to put the wheels back on the birds.
Who would think I'd ever be unhappy with temps in the 50's this time of year,,, what a world
Happy New Year

Swamp boats only at this time
If the rain stops I'll be taking down xmas lights, if it doesn't College Football and balsa dust all weekend long
MILDBILL,
When you're in town visiting your Daughter, You're always welcome to come out and fly at the Grafton Field as a guest as well

Each ski has a pair of fins, stuck to the sides, with a tailplane across the top.
The ski is free to rotate about the axle and the tailplane stabilises the ski so that it flies in a level, low-drag, attitude.
It works much better than the array of springs, cords and wires that I tried at first.
This time I made the top of the ski flat for ease of building upside down, and the curl up on the ski front seems to be enough even on this powdery snow. The ones I made a few years ago (the black ones) had more curl that made building more awkward and didn't seem to ride the snow any better.

I had a set when I was in Michigan andhad a lot of problem with the springs, etc. like you mentioned.
I like the idea of the T-Tailthat youhave on yoursto replace all that junk. Great idea!

my clubmate Len tried conventional skis, and these photos demonstrate the problem of controlling them.
The tend to go into a high drag nose up attitude at high airspeed (aerodynamic forces on the negatively cambered shape).
Sometimes they go nose down - OK on takeoff but awkward if they do it when you want to land.

Cure for that is to have the front of the ski's spring loaded, with the rear having a thin wire to limit travel.
It's how I setup mine, works good too. Goes to maybe 15 degree up in flight, but settles right in during landings.
A runner is helpful underneath each ski, to keep it tracking where you point it on the ground. No runner and it's amazing how well our model's will go sideways on the snow!

Different, yes....better, nah.

I like simple. No springs, wires, adjustments, etc.
My engineering design mentor always said "the best part is no part." Over the years, I found out that he was right, especially when it comes to parts on airplanes.

14 Degrees! Brrrrrrrrrrrrr. I had everything below 32 removed from my thermometer.
Got in some bitter cold Texas weather flying Saturday. Started out at 35 degrees, got up to mid-50's.
Had an engine failure when I went inverted. I suspected that the fuel pickup "clunk" was not moving properly.
First picture shows the fuel tube in the upright position, next the inverted position. Seems like the tubing that came with the stopper took a "set" and not just because of the cold weather, both pickup tubes were put in about three months ago. I replace them every six months.
The last picture shows a torn stopper, that may have been my fault, it is possible that I overtightened it.

Thanks Jim,
I saw similar posts before. Also saw that some people are getting away from the tygon and trying some other materials.
The tubing I have a problem with is the type that came with the stopper. It is yellow and fairlyclear. It lost flexibility very quickly. The regular tygon seems to be okay.

We got 16-18" in just four hours two nights ago here in lower NY. I hit the field this morning - with a shovel. Good thing, too, cause the entire field was 18" deep. I dug out a 15x15' "basecamp" and went flying. No wind, and 29 deg F, so great conditions. Flew my 78" Texas Hurricane with an XYZ 50cc - only the second flying session for this plane, and I'm very happy. The plane was very responsive, and the engine has good power. Love taking off and landing on snow! Only problem - the snow's so deep and still compactable, so if you bounce a take-off or landing you'll end up nosing-in, which is just what I did on one landing. Bent the ski and the aluminum LG, though it's fixable. I'll be reinforcing those skis.
Anyone who's not flying cause of the snow - buy some skis and a Raydiowarm and get out there - it's awesome. Sorry about the darkness of the pics - can't adjust for brightness on my Blackberry.

I hope to take my disposable glow out tomorrow. I call it disposable as I'd bought it at a local swap meet, then won a cash door prize, so it ended up being free. It's a Dura-Plane, and the only things I had to add were the Magnum .52 4-stroke, 2.4gHz rcv, and a couple TH servos.
If it doesn't behave good, no biggie.

I flew the Ultra Stick/DLE-20 3x Sunday. It ran well until it ran out of gas on a downline because i was too lazy to fill it up in the cold. No biggie, only causality was the 2 nylon l/g bolts, even the prop was OK. I did fly it the first time with a Vess 17-8 and I went back to the Vess 17-6 and I liked it better, especially in slowing down enough on the skis. Oh yes, I crashed the little AJSlick chasing a balloon! It was not the first time, and it needed a new fuse anyway...

And you have to see the best flyers around here, Cody and Josh. Here is a video of Cody with a new 3DHS Extra 330.

Live Wire -
You are up north where it is a "dry cold"andyou're probably used to cold weather. With temps like that, you are probably dressed in a short sleeved shirt and shorts. I have all the clothes I own on and I'm still cold. It was 76 here a couple of days ago.

Was out flying my 78" Texas Hurricane earlier today in the Bronx, NY. Was about 30F, 12mph. Wanted to get in a few flights before a projected two days of rain (and the possible ruination of my snow-covered field). A very light rain\snow turned into freezing rain while I was assembling the plane. Then had to re-attach the skis, as they were too loose. By the time I was ready I had to scrape a layer of ice off of the entire plane. The snow on the ground was a bit sticky, but the plane took off no problem. While in the air the freezing rain got heavier. Flew for about 8-10 mins then landed, and the plane came down a bit heavy. The frozen rain had re-accumulated on the plane's surfaces, so I called it for the day. Even though it was wet and nasty out, still was fun getting the Hurricane up for a bit.
Is there any easy de-icing solution that can be sprayed onto RC plane surfaces without damaging them? (not that I anticipate doing this type of flying often). Maybe car windshield-wiper fluid?

My first time flying of snow for this So Cal transplant,, It was a great morning, over cast but no wind,, 1.5" Icy layer ontop of 8" of snow,, we all had a great time,, even pushing cars/truck back onto the road,, LOL
Of course I went out there and left the card for the camera in the computer,,
Had a little drama when one of my skis fell off,,, No Locktite,,, ooops
Touch and goes w/ 2 of 3 skis,, no problem,, full ailerons on touch down,, LOL

Well, the Lorain County RC Club apparently had their New Years snow fly, about a dozen people showed up, but only one flew. The report was that it was too wet. I couldn't make it, spending NYD with my kid and his family in Irmo, SC. I did stop at the field a week later after the January club meeting and got in a flight with my Island Hopper, which was terminated by the driven gear on the prop shaft coming loose. It was fun, walking about 300' downhill across about a foot of snow. But, I had to do it. It's become an addiction. I thought I was going to stop at 20, but I just found myself on a fair Jan. day, starting year 21 without missing a month.
