I have sourced my gear from RangeVideo

Complete selection and good service.
They have entire kits available.

looking to get into FPV
Why not just stick with video games and leave the RC flying to actual model airplane hobbyists?

NJRCFLYER2.....Are you some sort of elitist who is afraid to try or accept new technology. Maybe you should go back to flying rubber band powered free flights.

Handyman.........I got into FPV awhile back and wasted a lot of money experimenting. If I were to start now I would look into the FlyCam3, it is an easy setupand has add ons that will enable you to download to a laptop, video goggles or both. Check out the URL below. FPV is a lot of fun and takes some time to get good at especially if you want to do air to air videos. Go to Vimeo or YouTube and check out the videos, very few are really good.

Having looked at the FlyCam3 I would have to say what an easy way to start, especially at the prices quoted.

With the addition of the video goggles to replace the screen on the ground, you would have a very complete, all in one solution.

It would only be when you want more, say, higher resolution, more range, etc. that you might look into the gear from the specialist suppliers like RangeVideo.

A piece of advice about FPV goggles, If possible try to "try before you buy". I went through 3 brands before I found one I liked and even then I wasn't totally happy. My biggest problem is that I wear trifocalglasseswhich makes the use of FPV goggles a bit difficult.

I don't know the range of that particular unit but it is probably safe to say that the range of most of the units available for thehobbyistis farther than you would be able to see your airplane. You can increase your reception by changing your antennae and or upgrading to a dualdiversityreceiver. This URLhttp://hobbywireless.com/cart/index....products_id=22will take you to the unit I have with info on range and a video at the bottom of the page. Whatever you decide to get for an FPV cam, make sure the frequency for the cam and plane are different.
Go to this URL http://www.rcexplorer.se/page14/FPV/FPV.htmlfor all you want to know about FPV.

This is the URL for the goggles I use, I like these because the front flips up instead of having to take the glasses off if you want to get "eyes on" the plane.http://www.vrealities.com/vrealviewer.html

I think I've spent more on fpv equipment then food over the past 4 years. Only one set of goggles. Headplay for the past year and to be honest I just started using them when I bought the 3d fpv cam from EMR Labs/NGhobbies. I do think the quality is great when you learn to get them adjusted right, but the connection to the "liberator" (anything but liberating) is so touchy that I keep a small tv running vid just incase I fart near it.

Cameras - all purpose - SN555 from hobbywireless (its a kt&c camera with the prefix vsn500 I think. if you do some searching you will find it cheaper through security cam stores)

Transmitter/receivers - stick to the industry standards Hobbywireless, nghobbies, rangevideo, future hobbies. 2.4Ghz tx/rx should be airwave or lawmate guts and 900Mhz should be from DPCAV.com Pro Series. Best I've owned and great customer service. If you want to go cheaper then the Rangevideo 500mw tx is the same without the added low pass filter/power lead. Its the same guts without the frills (warning if you use 900Mhz and want to use osd with gps then save yourself the trouble and get the filter, ferrites, and twist any extension wires.

900Mhz pros, great for penetrating trees and other obstacles, cons RX technology is behind that of the 2.4 gear and wide bandwith of rx gives some noise you don't see with 2.4. lookup saw filter mod for 900mhz tx, fire up the soldering iron and have at it. great improvement in picture and range.

2.4Ghz pros, better video quality with stock components (IMHO), super simple 2.4Ghz goof proof patch antenna instructions online. (i've built 10 or so and they out perform any 14dbi patch on the market. 7.00 dollars to build. doesn't mess with your gps reception.
Cons sensitive to interference in populated areas (which we shouldn't be flying in anyways right?) Needs really really clear line of sight.

Plane - Now this is strictly a personal opinion but I HATE the EZ* I don't care how many videos you see online or how many people sing this planes praises its still a flimsy foamy and I have never been able to justify dumping all the expensive gear in packing material. I love the Hanger9 alpha 40 (E-Conversion) the Great Planes Electro stic RXR this build takes about half an hour and you can shove lots of gear in it without much thought. Just watch it because it gets out of range real quick if you not careful. if you must go with foam then I've had success with the radian, the ez glider, UHU Electro, EZ* (i know I bashed it but it does work, just a pain in the ass to get all that gear in and it sounds like my blender)

OSD If you have the money the RVOSD IV is great but get ready for some real work when you get into is waypoint sequencer, RTH mode etc. Looks easy on the site but trust me it took a long to to get it right. Worth the time if your into that.
Eagle tree OSD Pro W/ Eagle eyes looks great for the price. I fly the osd pro without eagle eyes (use Immersion rc tiny telemetry with antenna tracker and oracle for diversity but this setup costs a great deal more to do the same thing I hear)
Cheap and easy OSD that I still fly on my smaller setups is the Blackstork OSD. I fly the first version and it was simple to set up and gave me that direction to home arrow that saved my but in the beginning. Also own inspire osd (sucks, only use it for shudder control for aerial photos)
and EZosd (another solid easy to use setup for antenna tracking and telemetry).

Pan/tilt/tracking antenna. I hesitate to advise on this one because I have only used the Immersion RC gear. I'm going order the eagleeyes ground station soon to compare but aside from a few glitches here and there I've had great success with it.
NOTE: If your using 900Mhz gear stay away from the medium duty pan/tilt mount from servocity.com it can't handle the 900Mhz patch unless you buy 2 hs-765 sailwinch servos which are a bit expensive. I've seen a nice lookin mount at fpvpilot.com (I think)

Pan/tilt camera mount. Build your own by watching online tutorials or if you want a pretty one, the pandora pan/tilt setup is pretty nice looking especially if you solder it together.

Head tracking gyro, (on a flytron mag tracker but have yet you use it) heard good things about trackr2 Immersion rc.

Diversity get the 900Mhz you have three options Nano docking station available at future hobbies (Good quality, metal case, works well)
Oracle diversity controller (Works equally as well, don't like the plastic case) or incorporated eagleeyes ground station ???
2.4 Ghz I have only owned the immersion rc and it worked very well for me. Yellow Jacket was too expensive but if you have money to waste let me know how it works.

Long Range RC Scherrer UHF LRS is the only system I've used and I love it. with the 1w setting I can fly 5.5 miles. My video is fading yet I have no drops. I hear dragonlink is as good if not better. The two systems programming were both done by the same guy (danial wee I think) and you can't go wrong with either. Immersion RC has a system too but I can't comment on it. I never bothered to keep up with the long range rc developments because unlike any other component, I'm completly satisfied with Thomas Scherrers system.

Antennas L-com or diy patch. Just a suggestion, trash any stock wire antenna comes with the cheaper transmitters. Get a low dbi 0-3dbi tops on your transmitter end and a higher dbi patch or omni if you only have on RX or yagi/patch or duel patch combo if you have diversity. I haven't had much luck with narrow beam parabolics even with tracking.

Probable more info then you wanted but I cut and pasted it from an email to a guy I built for. I don't do too many builds for profit anymore it costs me more in time then I seem to have but if you need any help PM me and I'll be glad to help.

This guy is "Special" Like the window lickers on the short yellow bus. He comments on "Actual model airplane hobbyists" yet he must have been searching fpv if he stumbled upon this post. Hey buddy I know your more than a little intimidated by what we do but if you play nice you may find that most of us "Fake video game playing RC FPV Pilots" are pretty helpful when it comes to newbee's such as yourself. Come on now put away those big silly toys (we know you fly giant scale because you can't see anything smaller btw...thats why fpv is so great for you old timers) and let us introduce you to the next generation of model airplanes!!!

Hi t_low37:

I am currently looking into getting a receiver and transmitter setup for my EagleTree Systems OSD Pro. What wireless color micro camera's with a great video quality would you recommend? My goal for getting into FPV is to nail my landings right on the dotted center lines, so I'm not really concerned about distance, quality more so, will be great. Since my radio and receiver is a 2.4 ghz system, I was thinking about 5.8 ghz. Can you shed some light on this for me?

Thanks in advance.

FPV isn't hard, it just takes a lot of research and design... You need to set goals, and design your system around those goals. I spent 4 months (over 200 hours) designing my setup. A brief overview of my component setup is in the credits.

Here is my first FPV video! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NG79AVjgmaU

Couldn't agree more. I remember spending 32 hrs straight on my first osd setup with gps. Couldn't figure out why I couldn't pickup any sats. Really helped out when I flipped the patch up to face the sky. As far as camera's go....My personal favorite for everyday use is the SN555 (hobbywireless.com) Its sold by a bunch of fpv and security vendors under different names. KT&C is the manufacturer or importer most likely. Higher end??? Every time I spend over 150.00 for a camera I'm dissappointed.

Here's a recent video flying over the everglades. I didn't quite stick the landing but it was a really tight squeeze between two pits of alligators with a decent crosswind. Love the alpha 40 for fpv. You should see it now with Co-pilot! Smooth sailing! http://www.vimeo.com/17791532

I just wanted to jump on and thank everyone that supplied info here.
I have been interested in this for months and its pretty cool that you guys share your info to make it easier and cheaper for us just starting out.
Thanks again,

Eganwp... Very cool.. Been killing myself to get to where you are.. Great job. Consider doing a video about your setup and putting it together.. Credits could be a little longer took me three tries to read it all.. Again. Super job.. Now OSD??

My set up:

Tx and rx. Lawmate 1.28 1000mw
OSD eagle Tree because haven't been able to get Range Video
Camera 555
Radio control is FrSky module and rx thru Range video

Planes: hangar 9. Alpha 40 with eflie 25. Many Easy Stars hollowed out per Tim at Ready made RC

Goggles... Fat Shark don't like because far sighted and can't get plus diopter
View box home made from 1/8 in aircraft ply. With 8 in monitor

Eagle eye with Readymade Tracker..

,lost one due to no spotter as the RTH function is iffy and takes forever to sort out... Please use a buddy cord or at least another flyer as a spotter... Per AMA ... Big sky, little electric airplane and not even a clue which way to look...impossible to respot once you lose sight even an easy star is faster than you think.. And really small... Been an Rc and full scale pilot most of my life and this is tough..

Things I will eventually change:

Try another 0SD as eagle tree is good hardware but forever to figure out... Documentation is not good. Don't know if RV is better but can't be worse..

My power in the EZs are eflite 370 with castle thunderbird 54, surplus rating is necessary because it is inside foam with no air.. Works good . I use the mounts from Readymade and make an additional plate to raise the motor for a cut Dow 9-4 prop..quiet and woks good...

I hate foam planes but can't beat the Easy Star.. Like I said I hate foam.. But when learning.......

For a cheap easy start up try a Go Pro on a basic airplane. Freaking quality video, 1080p like you wont see again. Add the tx, then the OSD as you go along... This is a bunch of stuff to get your head around at one time.. Don't be tempted to order the low power stuff from hobby king unless you are into indoor foams.. They lie about the power and the camera is junk and the RX has connector like your tv..

Best help and service has been from Tim at Ready made ( actually answers emails and reads/answers your question) .. Range video has good documentation and good stuff with an excellent forum.. Although email is slow.. Both are good and don't sell junk..again go slow, I didn't and it cost me (not my personality, unfortunately) ... But boy it is fun...

Keep in mind that "good" and "cheap" are relative terms defined by the individual. That being said, the [link=http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_listCategoriesAndProducts.asp?idCategory=316&curPage=2&v=&sortlist=&LiPoConfig=]FPV[/link] combination systems at Hobby King offer great value. Note that the pan/tilt assembly only cost $4 at HK along with your own sub-micro servos.

Not only do they include a 510(H)*492(V) color camera, they include a wired harness and 3dBi antennas! My system has been upgraded by a FlyCamOne HD camera/recorder and an HEC 12v LCD TV. My plan is to use a Xen [link=http://www.lowpricerc.com/product_info.php?products_id=981]Skywalker EPO[/link] Version 3 but you can easily fit the HK systems into a smaller Multiplex Easystar.

The best approach is to start simple. Fly the plane by sight and record the video. If you like what you see and get the "FPV bug", then you can spent more money on goggles, better cameras and antennas, etc., because you're hooked!

I just dropped a grand last week in gear, and have flown exactly ZERO min of FPV. Lot of research and money. But BOY AM I HAVING FUN!!

I knew if I went the cheap route and bought a lot of HK stuff, I would just be up-grading in a month or two.

Bought:
1- Lawmate 1.3 1w Tx
2- LM 1.2 Rx
RVOSD G5 w/ IMU
FatShark goggles
Clover Leaf antennas
Patch antennas (optimized by ReadyMade)
Pan/Tilt
RMRC-480 OSD Camera
Ground tracker

Got coming:
DragonLink UHF Tx
2- DL Rx

Waiting for:
RVGS (Ground Station)

Default RE: looking to get into FPV

Oh, one thing I want to mention, IF your going to run 1.2, the 1.2 8db Patch antenna's are NOT tuned for 1280mHz. They are tuned for something like 1040 or 1060. Patch's are great, but you need to open them up and trim the plate down a little to bring it in for 1280. Very easy to do, or you can buy it done from ReadymadeRC.

Just felt like throwing that info out there. Scoot
