Default 9caf range check

Hi
I'm using a Futaba 9CAF with the synthesized freq module, and was wondering about the antenna position during a range check. The module gets warm (as per usual I'm told) and I'm concerned about using the Tx with the antenna all the way retracted. I did a range check this afternoon with just the first section extended and I ran out of room after about 150 feet (not at a flying field). Should the antenna be all the way retracted or up one section?
Thanks
Sam

Hello Again
I fired up the plane again and did a quick range check with the antenna all the way in. I had well over 100 feet, maybe 125, and ran out of line of sight room, with no problem. I'm running a CH ignition so I was concerned about RF noise. I'm still concerned if running the Tx with the antenna in will cause any problems.
Thanks
Sam

just don't leave it down for extended periods... for a quick range check...no problem, then just turn off the radio or raise your antenna

Hi DaddySam,

The antenna should AlWAYS be extended with the first or thickest portion out of the transmitter. Collapsing the antenna completely and powering up the radio can harm the module.

I hope you find this information helpful. You can also reach our Futaba support technical team at 217-398-8970, or via fax at 217-398-7721.

Sincerely,

Hello Krysta
Okay, but just out of curiousity is it because of the synthesizing module? I did read the manual, but I bought my radio before the synth module became available, and it clearly states that the Tx antenna be all the way in and the range be 100+ feet. So if I have the thickest section extended, do I need to look for more range, or is the 100 feet still a valid test? If the antenna being out is a requirement for the synth module, may I suggest that Futaba include a small addendum to the instruction sheet that comes with the module?
Thanks,
Sam

Not extending the antenna of any modular radio, whether it is synthesized or not can harm the module with excessive heat build up if left this way for any length of time.
Having the antenna fully retracted MAY not harm the module for short periods of time, but to be on the safe side, again, with any radio that utilizes a module, it is suggested to have the thickest portion out.

The 100+ feet of range is valid with the antenna's first segement out.

Why is this NOT stated in the manual???????

And if it is, my apologies, but I couldn't find it...

What I read on page 17 of the manual is to leave the antenna retracted...
I'm not questioning you, but why is it stated this way in the manual???
