Modified mine for use with SPE40 using Champion RCJ6Y spark plug. Bench test ran OK. I am going to the field to test it out today.

I modified the spark plug cap. The cdi came with small cap for CM-6 plug whereas SPE 40 is using RCJ6Y which is bigger.

To be more precise, I actually opened up the small cap and replaced it with the stock SPE 40 plug cap.

Flew it this afternoon, it was initially having some interference and not running smoothly due to poor contact of the plug cap with the spark plug's hex head. The problem was temporary solved in the field by tightening it with a cable tie, and the engine ran smoothly after that.

The sad thing was: I crashed my plane due to human error...sob...sob....

Oh no!!![X(][X(]

So sorry to hear that mate. Oh well theres plenty where that came from is what I say Our Extra260 almost came to an end when it went deadstick and my son ran out of air speed and laded so hard that it cracked the firewall. All repaired and flying, then the CDI failed.

So, what are you replacing it with?

I am planning to get a World Model Super Sport Senior, Wingspan 81" but I wonder if my SPE 40 engine can go in.

My SPE 40 engine also needs replacement of the crankshaft which was suspected to have slight bend in the impact.

Hall sensor was a straight bolt on job but spark plug cap that I received was of the smaller type and need mod.

Well what do ya know!

The SPE40 fired up last night with the help of my nephew whos is a motor diagnostics mechanic. There is nothing wrong with the CDI at all![X(]

Goes to show, even after expert aero modellers looked at they agreed it was the CDI. All it was, was a flooded engine with a fuel gummed up plug. Even with a new plug. The engine needed the gunk flushed out of it and the plug burnt with a cig lighter flame to burn off all the crap.
Popped the plug back in and the engine fired up in 1 min!![X(]

So looks like the Extra260 is flying this week end.

I'll still be swaping out the new Rcexl CDI next week and doing a carb upgrade next month.[8D]

Sometimes a loosen spark plug cap also would give false alarm of a malfunction CDI...

Crabby. Hows the maiden going - been up yep?. I have exactly the same plane - CMP Yak 54 140 fitted with an SPE40 as well. Its a really heavy plane for the wing loading so keep the speed up - other wise she will tumble out of the sky with no recovery prospects. The SPE pulls this plane with authority - a great combo. At the moment I dont know wether I hate the Yak or love it. It's bitten me twice with no notice. Make sure you keep the elevator movement really tight or she will snap and die. Good luck. lets us know how it goes.

Hey Royster,

I still haven't run my engine yet. waiting to finish the model first.

I bought the dustbin style wrap around muffler for the SPE 40cc from BCMA only to find out when i received it that it's too big to fit in the tight spot i have in my model... so if your interested PM me.

Thanks

dave

Wheres the pics of the build!?

Yeah I bought a rear dump muffler from Cermark only to find out the same thing that it hits up against the back firewall plus the screws from the standard muffler dont fit through the holes of the rear dump muffler[:@]

Nevermind it was pretty cheap. Will keep it in case I need it for another airframe.

Hint: Buy a digital servo for the throttle as the standards are OK for glow but not for SPE gassers.

I'm at 40:1 now running Pennzoil. Put a 20X8 Xoar on it when it really started coming on. Great little engine. Prime it, two flips and it's running like a champ.

well took it out for its maiden and no good.the cmpro yak is way too tail heavy and struggled to even get it down safely.we adden 750 grms to the front and another battery pack to the front for weight and still no good.second time up with all the extra weight increased the wing loading and it went in on landing.verry minor damage to the yak and broke the engine mount lugs off but thats it.got out of it verry lightly for what was hapening.plane is goin to a new home when i get around to advertising it.the motor ran sweeeeeeeeeeet, verry impressed with the power this thing has.its goin in a 25% extra 330 l next and should preforme alot better.as they say $h%t happens so will try again

Hey crabby sorry about ya Yak. No offense but they are a dog of a plane. Everyone I know has had issues with that model. Its too heavy!

Try and stay away from CMPro. This goes for their fiberglass ARFs. Dont know if their balsa kits are any good.

The Peakmodel planes are good value but a Hanger 9 Extra 260 would be perfect for the SPE40 as the DA50 is too heavy for it
