My new DA 50 has about 1 gallon through it now. I have had a couple of dead stick landings due to the motor cutting out. It tends to sputter when I'm on an upline. Once I get it up high and go in to a flat spin the motor dies. What is the problem here?? I did lean out the high and low end a little. The low end was leaned out until the transition was not good and then I richened it back up enough to get a great transition. It revs awsome with no hesitation on the ground. Mid range it sputters some. The high end is leaned out but only very little. DA told me I could lean out both settings before it had 4 gallons through it and I dont have to wait for total break in. I am not too lean for those of you thinking thats the problem I'm sure. Again, I have sputter on uplines and it has died when goin in to a flat spin. Other than that it runs perfect when just flying in circles. Inverted flight is fine too. Please help me here. The last dead stick was rough and now I have to repair my brand new Wild Hare Edge becouse of this. I'm tired of it and feel like just buying a 3W-55. I dont want to but thats how upset I am with this DA. Thanks to all who replies.

running in is a fallacy ! this is not the problem. I was doing inverted and up-right flat-pins the first day out ! no problem. One thing it could be is the needles are set rich. The motor comes from the factory set rich on both needles. It will run, but not great ! gurgle is sign of a rich needle setting or something else causing the engine to be rich on the mixture.

I agree with them being on the rich side. The low end I leaned out until the transition was bad and then turned it back out enough to have a great transition so it should be right on. The high side is still a little rich I'm guessing. DA said the mid range sputter is coming from the low side setting though and again I think it's set right on so maybe the motor just needs more fuel ran through it. I do think I will richen up the low end just a little though and lean out the high end a hair more and see how that goes. Remember it sputters full throttle on uplines and when I go in to a flat spin and back off the throttle it died. Could be too rich on the high side and the sudden cut in throttle with alot of fuel in the cylinder is choking it out and causing a dead stick. dont know??

Even though your transition is good you can still be too rich on the low end. You have to listen to the engine from idle up to mid throttle. If it's still a little rich it will 4 cycle (missing every other power stroke). When it's lean enough the 4 cycling will be gone except for a little between idle and 1/4 throttle. When you get to this "area" of perfect low end needle setting, only tiny movements of the low needle are required. It's amazing when you find that perfect low end setting, the engine runs completely better in the air. My buddy's is there. Mine is still a little rich.

The high needle really only controls from 3/4-WOT..the Low end is the most important one..After I set my high needle and get a good transition on the ground I just fly and listen to the engine..Usually I lean the low end 1/16-1/8 after each flight until its perfect..
