Hmmm...
I'm thinking about the motors I've been playing with...wondering if I'm becomming a conversion addict....
So far...three Poulans (34, 42, and 46cc) and a Ryobi.....and not one plane to bolt them too!!!
I want to try a Homlite 45...looks on par with the Poulan 46 without the hassle of the carb mounting issue.
Oh..ya...one quetion on the Homelite 45cc....is it a SINGLE ring or double ring piston?
Anyone else got the same problem? Can't seem to find enough airframes for your motors? I can almost guarentee FlipFlop has this problem (hehehehe)
.... RCIGN too....
I need to score some cheap 72-80 inch planes for these things....
Looking at slapping a couple giant coroplast jobbers (Stinger Clones) for a couple of them..

You've got that right :stupid: Motors all over the place! I could have my Texas Hurricane ready in a day or two, but spend all my free time messing with motors. Anybody need some new weedeater cutting heads or chainsaw blades

Ya...me too! I got into this hobby soon as I heard the first RC engine running on a plane back in 1974. I did fly some of that time..but ended up helping others with engines more than flying. How about it Guys... How many of you think about engines more than flying????? Come on....tell the Truth!

I have six weed whackers converted. I have that many more weed whackers and chain saws yet to be converted. I have planes to put the ones I've finished in, but havn't gotten around to it.
I'd rather convert and mess with engines. I have a bunch of glow engines too.
Enjoy,
Jim

Addiction? What addiction??! I can quit any time I want. *twitch*... *twitch*

Yep, count me in too. I have:
2 single-ring Ryobi 31cc
1 twin-ring Ryobi 31cc
1 Cub Cadet 25.4cc
2 Poulan 46cc
1 Mac Minarelli 70cc (well sort of, but I did buy this one bare block)
Sooner or later I'll chop up that Ryobi 26cc 4stroke weedwacker in the garage too. I'm also eyeing a couple of re-furb Echo engines at Home Depot too.
I do have a few ARF boxes piled up in my study waiting to get built, but I must admit I have wayyy more engines, both RC and conversions, than I have airplanes. I too am having more fun converting engines than flying airplanes these days.

I admit that I have absolutey no desire to fly, but everyday I read all the latest news about engines, 4cycles, Stihls, ignition kits and such, almost no work has been done on my 1/4 scale Ryan.
And I am collecting engines everyday, thinking about ways to balance the conrods, crank, trim the case and my biggest headache is getting a minilathe so I can make my own prop adapters since nobody has them for sale, must ship engine to them which is expensive. If only a person had an online store that could reference the engine/threads/taper and just sell it by one click method, instead its like trying to get beer during prohobition!
So I am forced to spend around $600 to make a $10 part, which everyone who does makes these adapters claim its a "special job".

You know what I really want to do? make a crankcase and crank for a 4 cyl. inline, then use 4 18-32cc cylinders and have this ready for a 1/4 scale project like a P-51. Even 4 18cc Featherlites in series should make a good start.

...Had another withdrawal last night and bought an Echo 25.4cc short block off Ebay. I love these little guys made by Zenoah (for inductrial use). A couple more of these and I can just about get rid of all my 1.20 glow motors.
Oh well, hope I'll stay clean a lil' longer this time.

Thanks Terry. Hopefully I'll get to run them this weekend.
BTW, you may see this Echo 25.4cc pretty soon, or at least be sending me conversion parts for it, if it is exactly the same as the other one.

Here's a picture of the short block I just bought. I have pictures at home of my Cub Cadet version (almost identical to the Echo except the CC is single ring) with the crankcase lightened by trimming off the mounting bracket and flanges not necessary for RC. IIRC, the bare block weighed right around 2lbs with the carb. Add a muffler and it's up to maybe 2-1/2. That'll be it for a glow conversion.
That compares favorably to the typical 1.20-1.60 2stroke or 4stroke RC glow engines, especially if you consider the added weight of the motor mount, which the Echo doesn't need. My Saito 1.20S, for example, weighs about 2-1/2 lbs with muffler and mount.
For a gasoline version with elec ignition, you'll have to add another probably 10Oz for module and battery, but that's behind the firewall. These engines are lighter than the Ryobi 31cc and Homelites, and made to a much higher standards with dual counter balance and dual ball bearings. Forged alloy conrod instead of stamped steel. They also cost substantially more, of course.
I can take pictures of it all decked out RTF as soon as I get my other one back from CH.

volfy, is that a 25cc McCulloch? looks just like one I have before I cut the front magneto housing off and trimmed all the excess material, it has an angled spark plug and a Zama carb? M8 thread shaft?

I haven't seen a McCulloch 25cc, so I' not sure. They could be very similar or even identical. My understanding is that Zenoah OEMs these for many different brand names, including Echo, Cub Cadet, Troy Bilt and even the Pro-grade Ryobi 2079r. They are equipped a little differently from brand to brand. My Cub Cadet 25cc shown below comes with a Walbro WYL fixed-jet carb and single piston ring. The Echo shown above, OTOH, is typically equipped with a Zama carb and dual piston rings.
I originally was gonna use the stock magneto ign, but the whole enchilada ended up weighing close to 4lbs RTF, thus negating the one major advantage of these engines - light weight. I've since had CH fit it with a timing kit, and I'm gonna try it with CH ignition, and also on glow.

Here's a view with the lightened flywheel and prop adapter installed. Carr Precision did this work for me. BTW, I won't be needing these anymore, so if anybody would like to have them, email me.
These engines do have 8Mx1.00 thread. You need to be careful, since there is another coraser pitch 8Mx1.25. That is 1.00mm per pitch vs. 1.25mm per pitch.

I gotta figure a way to post pics, my 25cc is even ground down the same!, cut the rear shaft as well, don't have a prop adapter or ign. kit, it does have a single ring. looks like an identical twin to yours, paid $10 for it as a weedie, ran great but its too small for my current project as well. I do believe mine has the M8-1.25 pitch. Also now that I'm holding it in my hand there is no lugs on the front fins, also my shaft is shorter. It must be almost the same but there is some differences, have you flown that engine or got specs on it?

Volfy: Did you convert a Ryobi 31cc to glow? If so how did it start, idle and was the transition good? Did it start easy without kickback or did you have to use electric starter? Thanks Capt,n

I just got this engine back from CH. Thanks, Terry. Great work as usual. I will post pics later.
Daniel, I sent the engine to CH brand new, so I don't have any RPMs for it. Terry test run it on gas & CH ignition with, IIRC, a 16x8 and got something like 8400rpm at 5000' elev and 35F. If he reads this thread, he can tell you exactly. I'm gonna try it on glow this weekend and expect to see at least 500rpm gain. That'll be on top of whatever gain I get down here at sea level. I only have 3 single cyl. CH Ignition modules, so one of these will have to run on glow.
I am thinking of putting this 25cc on my WM Super Sport Senior instead of the Saito 120. I like running 5% oil glow fuel - much less clean up and cheap!
captin, yes I did. I have another thread on the Ryobi 31cc glow conversion, so I'll answer your question there if you don't mind. I'm getting somewhat off-topic here.
