I have a Thor 45cc Gasser that I'm putting on my 27% Extra 260. I am putting a Sullivan Skywritter on it.
My question is, do I need a special "Smoke Muffler" or would placing a tap somewhere on the stock muffler be sufficient?? I know the stock muffler gets hot enough.
Thank you for any and all information.

Adding a tap to your existing muffler (usually closest to the cylinder for the hot spot) seems sufficient. Some wrap around pitts style mufflers have coils to preheat the oil, but you should be fine. I would tap the flange on the muffler where it mounts to the exhaust flange of the engine. The material is plenty sturdy here, and it should be plenty hot for smoke.

What Chad said plus one more thing. When taping the muffler, do not tap it in such a way that the smoke oil will be sprayed right into the exhaust port on the engine. It could and most likely will cause the engine to stop. You could buy a smoke muffler for the coil but gas engines produce all the heat you need and the coil is there to help pre-heat the oil and adds weight
