Default 3MM engine

Has any one tried that new chinese 3mm engine yet and how does it compare?

I'd do a search. Been compared to the DL50 and others. Look in Wild Hare's forum. I believe there is a thread there.

You can find the WildHare 3mm thread here ....

http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_5547303/tm.htm

I own a 3mm and have it mounted in a scale Zero project. I chose the 3mm because of the way it mounts and the carb location ...perfect for a short, round cowl. Have not flown it yet as weather has not permitted that yet .... like 5" of snow just this last Thurs.

I closely inspected the engine inside and out and found the machine work, castings and overall assembly to be very good. Better than most engines that share a Chinese origin. The general opinion that seems to exist about the 3mm compared to its DL-50 classmate is that the 3mm runs smoother where the DL has a bit more power. The 3mm is just a bit heavier mostly due to its having a dual counterweight crank supported by 3 bearings.

I've flown 2 of them. Not the highest revving engine but it's an engine that's more than acceptable in performance, with the quality enough that it should last a long, long time. Like a 3w, it's power comes from operation in it's best torque band, not it's highest rpm band.

Here's a little known tidbit. Wild Hare will be marketing a small "hop up" kit for this engine pretty soon that should easily put it on a par power wise with the DL 50. It will be an easy install and make the 3mm 53 an incredible value. Currently Cermark is the primary distributer with Wild Hare and Dawghouse RC the two leading retailers.

Thanks for the info .... was not aware of that. I'm guessing a new reed assembly as that looks to be the main restriction on the 3mm.
