one more thing to think about, the Beila prop is 23.5" long not a true 24". but it is a wider blade prop.
also i bought the BME pitts muffler along with the 58,but have decided to go with a pipe set up,just orderd a header from Karl Mueller.

u would love the pipe as the motor is very smooth on a pipe and it does wake up a already powerful set up

Hey Guys,

Since I started this thread I thought I would give everyone a update on my BME 58. I originally had thought I would mount it on a 81" span Great Planes Yak but decided not to and bought a Chip Hyde Double Vision kit NIB to mount it on. I had my maiden flight yesterday and flew it some more today. So far I have burned a gallon of gas at 32 to 1 ratio for break-in. I plan on burning 3 or 4 gallons this way before leaning the mixture any. I am using a Zoar 23 x 8 prop and the plane has a dry weight of 17lbs 6 ozs. This plane is a great flyer to me. It fly's like a giant foamy and just floats in for landings. I hope to learn some 3d type stuff with this plane. The BME has no problem hauling this plane around with authority even with the rich mixture for break-in. It hangs on the prop at a pretty low throttle setting and climbs out of site pretty quick. The engine has run well and I've only had one dead stick when I had the idle set to low. As far as smoothness it seems fine when the model is flying, but sitting on the ground at a idle it is shaking things pretty good.

John

John2, is your prop balanced? They are usually pretty smooth running engines.

He's running a rich mix. No need to do that, and actually doing more harm than good performing a rich break in. It won't break in cold and rich. It will smooth out when he elects to tune the engine. That's also when he's going to find out how much power he really has.

I second the leaning part.

I finally did some prop testing today. First off, these numbers will not seem very high. I am at least 2+ inches too long on my header. Most people running the 58 with an ES composite pipe are at 11 or less, and a friend of mine says I should be around or below 10 inches.
You would not believe how quiet this pipe is, almost like an electric in the air. The throttle response and feel is no different than on a stock muffler, awesome.

Time permitting, I will start cutting 1/2 of an inch at a time until I hit max rpm or feel peakiness.
At this point I really do not need any more power from this engine, as it flies my EF Yak very well, and pulls it out of hover with authority. I am sure with tuning I can pull many more hundred rpm out of each of these props with no sweat.

This is a new 58 with less than 3 tanks through it. Karl Mueller header at 12.5 inches.
Edit:- Engine set rich d/t first run on a new engine with a pipe I have not experimented with before, better safe than sorry.

Vess 23a
stock muffler-7300+
Es composite-7600

Mejz 22x10
ES composite-7400

Menz-s 23x8

Now I just need to get off of my butt and tune the pipe, but as I mentioned, the power is great and I am on the rich side. I would only be tuning for bragging rights and to show off how hard I can rip a prop. Come too think of it,,,,, those are good enough reasons

Tom is also having some CF reeds made that will help the top end without taking out bottom end response, and maybe a new engine too

Hi Guys, I got to fly a gentleman's plane today with the 58 on a H9 Carden Yak. I'm very impressed with the power and smoothness, it was tuned right too, has a 23-8 Xoar prop and he says it tacks 7300. What most impressed me was the smoothness through out the whole throttle band, very electric like. Not like any 50 I've flown. With stock muffler and the wooden airframe the sound is very very low and good. Not sagging or burping in rolling maneuvers whatsoever.
This is a nice little engine and perfect on the Carden Yak, very solid match.

Thanks Ralph and Gerald for reporting the facts here. I look forward to an RPM reading with a Mejzlik 23-8.

Joe

You are welcome Joe. I use a TNC tach and even if I don't like the numbers I'm not going to argue with it Unfortunately the only prop to picked up rpm was the vess, all other props with the exception of the Mejz were lower than on a stock muffler It will give me some motivation to actually tune that pipe.
I put a couple of flights on it today and let a fellow member that actually knows how to 3D fly my plane. He really liked the way it flew and performed, so did I! Nothing like seeing your plane doing rolling harriers a few feet off of the ground[X(] to give someone motivation to practice more.

RTK I had a similar experience a year ago when tuning my G-62 on pipe. With the length optimized it liked the Vess 23A by 800 more RPM than the NX 23x8. Maybe the Vess is helping an engine unload into the pipe?

Yep, you got it Richard. Every prop needs a different length to be optimized and I am at least 1.5 to 2 inches too long for most everything. At 11 inches there are guys hitting 7900-8000 with a vess23a, I'm even off for that prop let along a higher loading one.
