Default Zenoah G62 spring starter problems

My friend has a Zenoah G62 with the spring starter system. When he goes through the start procedure there is a terrific noise from the spring starter- it sounds metalic in nature. The noise is reduced slightly if he does not wind the prop back as far, however it is still present. He has taken it apart several times and everything is in place. He has also lubricated it with grease. There is nothing wrong with the engine, it runs just fine. The only problem appears to be with the spring starterI have friends with the same system and they do not get this noise.
Any input or suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks

The problem with the spring starters is that they can never be wound tight or it will ruin the spring.

The one spring coil will pull down through two adjacent coils and then part of the coil will rub on the crankshaft.

I've seen this situation ruin the rear seal on some engines

All it takes is for someone to wind it too tight once?

Try a new spring.

I probably wound it to tight, I am taking it off which is a pain. Ian

1/2 turn is all the wind that is required to start the engine.

Good read, I have one on a G38 and love it. Pull back past compression and let go. If properly primed it starts almost every time on the first try. I will be careful not to overwind!

Thanks

I have a Quadra 40, half to three quarters pull is all that is required if it primed correctly. There are also conversion kits for the G62 to make it an electronic ignition. Horizon also has instructions on their site on how to set the prop and be able to flip start it.

Take the thing off...........you don't need it!!!! Extra weight and trouble. Learn how to hand start one, it's quite easy. I have been starting Zenoahs and everything else magneto under the sun for years with no issues.

Yes I took it off, it was cool to use, but I don't need headaches. Ian
