DLE30!
#3326
Sometimes I see people who should step it down a bit and buy something a little more graceful
I hear ya!!! I have my favorite plane My seagull extra 260 its my avatar their on the left. I went from a G-26 that hauled it nice to a 40CC P.O.S. and now I hope the 30DLE has comparable power I was hovering 13lb AUW at 1/4 throttle.
So that left the G-26 on the shelf I got an older hangar 9 Taylorcraft Its slow predictable easy to fly but the only plane I got than can do a tailslide into the smoke the smoke system left behind. (awesome)
I will resist putting a DLE30 on the taylorcraft. I hope

I agree...my heavy Midwest Giles 202took off in less that 50 feet & it was not near full throttle...the 20x6 grabs a lot of air...right now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Capt,n</p>

Well I got sick of working on other things to numerous to mention, so I installed the Frank Bowman ring in my DLE30 engine. I placed the ring in the bore to check end gap...perfect next to none. After I put everything back together (fun for me), I put the prop back on and man...what a difference in compression. I guess I will placethe engineback on the test stand & fire it up.Outside temp has got to cool a bit first. The engine was off my plane anyway to finish redoing the fire-wall. This is a plane I just got in a trade....a Cap 232...
I will run the engine in about a hour....to hot & humidoutside right now. Capt,n

What part of the bore did you check and what is your recomendation for the gap?
Thanks in advance Jk

Just take the ring and place in in the sleeve about 1/2 up in the bore. The end gap will be right and it will appear the ring has no gap. If it is to tight of end gap it will bind as you move ring a little. Frank makes these ring with precision and care....not to worry. Just do not break it installing. I am super amazed how much seal it has already....just flipping the engine over....and it has a nice bouncy feel.Compare the rings when you have em out...shoot my eys=es are not that good, but I can see the Bowman ring is far better made. Under a mag glass you can really see the diff. !!!!!!
I did not have time to run myDLE30....in AM I will. If I can sleep thinking about it!!!!!!!

Does anybody know anything about a DLE20 engine?

It is pre production.
There are a few people with prototypes in testing but the final production version is not available.

Well I posted last eve I would run my DLE30 for the first time with the new Frank Bowman piston ring. The compression is good...pulls fuel better....but will not HAND start. It must be the ignition or amessed up the carb setting. Maybe the settings need to be found again....it is so hot & humid now.....theD__ n thing is just going to have to set there.
UPDATED.... Wrong hobby....no....just bad ignition. I hope. Capt,n...Grumpy!
A little editing was needed!

OMG, now I am going to be in big trouble with my Financial Adviser when she hears that I want to buy another engine. Choices choices, YDA23 or DLE20. Thanks for the pic Capt,n but no thanks for putting me in the soup

Captainjohn,
Had the same problem with mine. Per advice recieved, I richened the low-end needle about a turn, got it running then adjusted for the proper transition (Thank you, Jody). Give it a try. I aslo soldered the hole in the butterfly for better draw when choking. Also, installed an NKG plug. Hand chokes and starts well, now. Takes about 10 flips after choking.
Bye the way... Your motto says you never met and engine you didn't like. Did you ever own an MDS?

I did richen the low end...but only 1/8 turn. Before it would not even run if I had it more than 1/8 from 'lets say" from itsits good spot. I would say sweet spot...but right now that piece of aluminum castings is not being sweet! I will try more juice to it! Capt,n

Captinjohn,
Hope it gets working for you. Mine is on a H-9 Taylorcraft and turning a 20x6 and it is a sweeeeet package. Take off at half throttle for realism, point it upwards at a forty-five degree climb, and hit full throttle. Climbs til it is a speck, then spin all the way down. Lands like a feather, too. I'm grinning like a kid......

The gas may be bad...here in Mich you never really know when gas stations switch to the summer grade. The gas is at least a month old and sure does not smell fresh. Going to get some fresh gas & mix up some Penns in it. Man its HOT & Humid. This state is surrounded by the Great lakes....humidity can kick butt!!!! I am going to kick that engine in the gashole pretty quick! Grumpy #3

John, give it a good prime, crack the throttle and just keep flipping it. When I put a new cylinder and piston on my 30 (massive SPS) It took me forever to get it running again.
At first I thought the ignition was bad, checked that nope, then I looked at the spark plug, nope not that. Checked reeds & carb, nope. I finally decided to keep flipping it. Finally it decided to start.

Is there a chance that something didn't get re-assembled correctly when you swapped out the ring, or that one of the parts got misplaced (or dropped on the floor)? Just wondering, because it can happen to the best of us some times.
The reason I ask is because it seems strange that it ran before the surgery...

In the changing of the piston ring, all I did was loosen 4 cyl base allen head bolts. Remove sleeve. Removed standard ring and placed new ring on piston. A little lube...back together...let the sleeve center just before tightening the 4 allen base bolts. Done. The engine has good feel to it. I did along the line prime it with fuel mix...it acted like it wanted to go...but no no no no no no no no go. This is crazy. Had it apart before and several engines apart. They started right up. I have no way to eclectic start it....because I never needed a electric starter.
Had to edit this a little....whenany engine does not start....I get crazed!!!! Capt,n
