DL100

Come on Joe, you need to have a more vivid and dramatic imagination to make your point hit home, suck a gasket in, booorrring. How about sucking the screws right out of the carb and into the crankcase, or vacuum packing the crankshaft with the crankcase, or one of my favorites, blowing a bunch of un-burnt fuel out of the stock mufflers onto the ground under the cowl then the engine backfires out the exhaust igniting the fuel directly under the cowl. Think I'm kidding?

Well, If Jody says it will cause problems then thats enough for me not to try it. Looks like rain here today so will have to wait until Thursday to fly my new carb setting.

Ok guys,,,,three flights today with the DL100 and it is running great. Not even a burp....very smooth.....Thanks to Jody for all the help and advise on how to set up the carb....Now,,another question,,,I'm flying with a 27X10 Zoar prop...how about some suggestion on a little quiter prop....

The PAU prop is the same as a Xoar laminated. If you are running a plain beachwood prop give the laminated version a try, either PAU or Xoar (same prop) it will be a bit quieter, it will hold the RPM down a couple hundred but pulls just as hard. My 111 ripped the beachwood prop like crazy (I like the sound) but it doesn't with the laminated one. If you want to try the PAU go here, http://performancercaircraft.com/

I bought the PAU and NX g3 props along with the laminated zoar and will see how they perform. I flew the NX today and it is really quiet and the upline and downline is good. I am pleased with it and will put the PAU on for flying this weekend. Jody, I did notice today that when flying inverted and in a knife edge, my dl100 seems to change sound. Starts to sound rich and blubblery. Inverted and upright flat spins are good as are the snaps. Excelration is smooth and strong. Just those two position seems different...any suggestions.???

My Feedback: (41)
ORIGINAL: JoeAirPort
My DL-50 was doing this inverted (lean) and knife edge (rich). I'd start with the vent plumbed to a more quiet place. I had to put a velocity stack on my DL-50 to get rid of it 100%. When I got my 55 I just went ahead and did both mod's. Funny thing is they both run the same: Awesome. No changing of mixture no matter what I'm doing in the air. You can roll it from upright to inverted and the engine sounds identical. Same with knife edge both ways. It's very nice when the engine runs so consistent.
PS: Jody at ValleyviewRC helped me sort this out BTW. He has the v-stacks there.

Joeairport, I reread your post before I made the post tonight and I have thought about the velocity stack for my DL 100. Can I get them from Valley View? I can't find them on their web site.

You don't need, or want, a velocity stack on the 100. Odds are it will hang out the bottom of the cowl. In doing so it would likely create a new problem. If it doesn't hang out the bottom of the cowl it would be so close to the inside you'd still need to cut a hole for better intake flow. I can just about assure that either way, a velocity stack on the 100 will bring more grief than assistance.

I will check tonight if the V-stacks I have will fit, bolt spacing I know will fit it's the choke valve I'm concerned about. I would think a 90 degree trumpet facing rearward like 3W uses would work best. I think I would try leaning the low needle a little bit more first.

Jody, thanks for the help on the V-stack and I will lean the low end a little more before the next flight. I agree that it would need to be a 90 degree trumpet style because as you know, going straight down would go thru the cowl as tired ole man said.

There is no V-stack that will fit in that little space, if adjusting the carb doesn't cure it and it causes some kind running quality or performance issue (not just a sound difference), you may try building a 3 sided box attached to the cowl that will channel incoming air to the rear of the carb.

I will work on the adustment first and then the box. My only real concern is it will cause the engine to quit in the knife edge or inverted flight although it hasn't quit yet so it may just be a needless worry and not a performance problem. I'll try more inverted flight Saturday and see what happens. My DL is great other than these two issues.

robinhood, I know thats what I need now and hope to buy it from you the first of the month. Had some issues come up with other expenses so I had to wait. I'll let you know next week on the buy. I flew three times today and as Jody recommended, I turned the low end needle in 1/8 turn and that made all the difference. No matter what attitude the yak is in, the engine now runs the same so I am really pleased.
I do have another question and it concerns smoke oil. I put a smoke fitting on both mufflers, right at the header. My question concerns the effect the smoke oil has on the engine. I have the TME smoke pump with the controller that allows me to control the amount of smoke oil with the throttle. My question is.>>>>will the smoke oil cause the engine to quit at low throttl or if doing an inverted flat spin, will the low throttle setting with the smoke on, cause an effect on the engine. Look forward to hearing from all on this one. I have heard different thought from people. some say it will kill the engine at low speed and others say no.....

Jodi,
I am trying to understand why my dl100 is hard to start. I choke it and even after some fuel drips out of the carb, it takes 20 to 30 flips or more to get the engine to fire. Then I need to re-choke it until it fires, then take the choke off and try to start. Runs a few seconds then stops and I have to repete the procedures over and over until the engine will keep running. Appreciate any suggestions on what I need to do to get it to start a little easier.
