Default Evolution 26GX Timing

Ok, so I looked around on the RCU forums for an answer to the next question, but I was not able to find one, so here is my question:

What is the proper timing for the Evolution 26GX gas motor?

I have converted my 26GX ignition to a Syssa CDI which states most motors have a 28-30 degree BTDC timing, but this seems really advanced to me.

Evo's manual for the 26GX is lacking in the area of timing, so I hope someone out there in RCU land can shed some light on the matter for me. The only reference to timing is a "Preignition point" of 5 degrees.

Thanks!

It also makes note of the timing hub magnet setting as 120/240 degres

There is no proper timing in the way of universal setting.
It all depends on Initial spark energy, spark gap, spark duration (oscillations), squish, gas/air ratio, compression ratio etc etc.
Tune the timing of your ignition/engine combo, whatever make you choose, for best rpm, and learn to live with any midrange issues you may encounter.

PS
The manual states the proper setting for the MSR ignition that MSR develloped for the MVVS engines, and that is supplied with every new engine. Why should they include all the other ignitions in this world?

I am running mine at 28 degs on a CH CDI. I haven't checked it to see if I can get more out of it by moving the timing but it starts and runs great at 28. My SuperTigre 51 and 90 conversions both run their best at 28 and I did check them at a variety of settings. The 51 idles better at 25 degs but doesn't make as many rpm's, the 90 runs it's best all around at 28. My G26 runs it's best at 28 and my DL50 does as well. With so many seeming to be happy at 28 I just set the 26 MVVS (same motor as the Evo) there and left it.

You say you converted it to a Syssa CDI, Which I beleive is a RCexl ignition, So it makes no difference what Evolution engines say's to set it to, You are not using there ignition.

The Evo engine has different static timing than the RCEXL requires. Mods are required.

I sent them an EM - now we wait and see if they have any useful info!

The factory prop hub has two magnets at 120/240 degrees - I think...

I am going to set it at 28 BTDC and see what happens.

Anyone else use a Syssa ignition out there?

So after setting the motor timing per the Syssa information, the 28 degrees BTDC is too advanced. The motor would fire, but kind of roll along and then quit. I moved the timing back to about 8-10 BTDC and she fired right up and idled smoothly. I need to adjust the carb and continue playing with the timing, but it looks promising!

Anyone else out there use the Syssa CDI ignitions on their motors (single or twin)?

You should have knowledge of the Syssa advance curves and the setting at engine static, which is where you will be when you place the sensor.
MVVS engines I tested had 5° at idle / static, and 26° - 27° above 4000 rpm. (21° to 22° advance curve in the ignition)
I have used RCexcl ignition conversions on the 26, and set them to fire at 26° static with excellent results. These ignitions retard when flipped fast enough.
Best way is to use a flash timing gun to get that high rpm advance just right.
