ORIGINAL: 69 roadrunner

Hey guys iam adding a smoke system first time iam using a three hole tank do i need to add a vent line on the third hole or do i just use the fill line thanks the runner
I used the vent line on my 3 hole tank. It seemed to me that if you do not vent the tank the oil will not flow. I ran my vent in a loop around the tank before bringing it out the bottom of the plane so that you are less likely to lose fluid in different flight attitutes.

Does the 3W smoke pump need a seperate battery, or does it just work off the reciever power?? If it works off the reciever power, I wont need an extra switch and battery. [8D]\

Is that the same pump that Aircraft International sells with the variable speed?

Where's the vid? I think this is the best pump on the market even though I don't have one yet.

How's the smoke at lower throttle settings? What about residue from the smoke. Is it better than a constant flow system? I've got a Don Harris pump with a pinch valve and to get it to smoke good at high power settings it blows black oil all over the plane at low throttle.

If you don't want oil all over your plane, don't use a smoke system

I'm not convinced that is 100% true with a variale speed pump. Some smoke residue I can see but black semi burnt oil all over the plane?

Sounds like whats happeing to you is,,when you dump to much oil and its not getting burnt, its loosening up the black carbon inside your mufflers and blowing it out with the unburnt smoke oil..realy low power setting like in harrier, dont get the pipes hot enogh for smokeing very good, i never use smoke unless im at least 1/4 power and the eninge is makeing heat in the mufflers.

Well yes it is getting too much smoke at low power but its just right at high power. I turned it down so it smoked good near idle on the ground but you couldn't even see it at anything above idle in the air. Smoked good at idle though and left hardly any residue.

i am not sure which way i am going next, i know it will be another yak, but i go from the ef 74" with the brillelli 46 combo to thinking about the aw75cc one, if money wasnt a concern i'd get the 75cc, i think thats a great combo, i have the composite-arf 2.3(90") extra with a zdz 80, excellent, and the aw yak is about the same weight but with more wing area, i know it would be sweet, ultimately the wife might decide, back to the money issue, either way, yours looks good

If the finances ever permit you,,get a 35% SD Yak,,talk about a plane,,,2223 sq inch,,they float like a foamie, ive had big Extras,,Edges,,,,Yaks,,the Yaks are just so much easier to fly and 3D,,second would be the Edge,,there great,,i picked the Katana, because the wing is so close the shape of Edge with allmost a straight leading edge on the wing, hope it flys close the Edge 540.You dont want to know what i think of Extras..LOL.,,i dont use normal switchs in my planes,,i use the Fromeco pin switchs,,if they fail, they fail in the on position,,i just hate the though of loseing a plane to a switch,,i know how you feel about that.

there is a guy in my club with a 3w106 on his 2.6 extra, seems to fly that around pretty good, i am hooked on zdz 80, i think its a great engine for the size, so i guess the 33% sd yak would be the one for a motor like that, its a bigger price jump to the twins, and the planes for them

I have a TME in my Christen Eagle.. and I only had one problem with it so far. It just stopped working all of a sudden, but if you turned it on and back off, you could hear a very faint click. My smoke pump was one of the original ones you 'cant' rebuild, so I ended up drilling out the rivits holding it together to get to the gears. Turns out there was a VERY tiny piece of plastic jammed in the gears. Took it out, put it back together with 4-40 bolts, and it works like a charm again

I gotta try a windshield wiper pump like you mentioned Minn.. that's such an awesome find!!
