RE: The BEST Smoke System
I'm new to the thread...thanks in advance for the reply:
Question: given a particular engine, say DA-50, what is the physical diff between a standard Pitts Slimline muffler, and a Slimline "smoke" muffler?
Does the smoke muffler have an internal coil???

RE: The BEST Smoke System
Has anyone tried vegtable oil as an eco friendly alternative? I am using kero at the moment with good results but was wondering about a bio type alternative!

Ok I spoke with Sullivan and they suggested to go to a lower voltage pack so I tried a 7.4 instead of the 11.1 and its MUCH better..even at 7.4 it still really pumps a lot at 100%..I lowered my End Point to 30% and it seems just about perfect...at least on the ground..The smoke comes on just a few clicks under 1/2 throttle..hopefully I will be close enough so I will only have to adjust the end point a little.
Bob this is how I have my TX setup..its a 9C
Pump is plugged into channel 5
endpoint is 30%
PMix #6...throttle master..aux 5 slave
Aux 5- null
pos 1 +100
pos 2 -89
pos 3 -90
pos 4- 90
pos 5 -93

Setup is in PMX-6. Channel 8 is Aux2. Aux 2 had to be reversed or it was max smoke at idle and Minimum at full throtttle. The subtrim of +120 needed to be used to get the pump to slow to a crawl with the motor at idle. By crawl I mean it pumps about two clicks at a time seperated by several seconds before the next cycle. So -100 means crawl. This is still enough to put out some thick smoke at idle but it doesn't seem to want to kill the motor. Switch A was used to cut off the smoke completely. Formerly I had it on one of the side VR's. It worked OK there, but it was too easy to kill the motor plus I was wasteing oil.

Pos 2 -100
Pos 3 -90
Pos 4 -60
Pos 5 -40
With the -90, -60, -40 the smoke thickens to max without much residue on the plane. I'm concidering reducing the numbers further to make the smoke last longer, IE -100, -100, -90, -75, -60 or lower. I'm running two 10 ounce smoke tanks. Also, I use a seperate 6v battery and external switch for the smoke.
This is just my setup, it may not work for others.

RE: The BEST Smoke System
Hi MATE,
Sorry to but in but I am just about to set up a smoke system on my new OS 160 FX. Can you tell me where the best position on the exhaust would be to inject the fluid to make smoke. Some people have told me if you don't inject in the right part of the muffler it can be sucked back into the motor causing it to stall.
Regards
Andrew.

RE: The BEST Smoke System
I installed TME Simple Smoke Pump (function ON/OFF only, no feature of programmable speed control) with 16 Oz smoke tank on ULTIMATE Worldmodels with DL-50. Use SUPER-DRI smoke oil and do fine adjustment for amount of smoke oil feeding to the muffer. It works well....

That's the same setup I have on my ZDZ 120 and it works good too.

RE: The BEST Smoke System
I just tried the RCShowcase super smoke pump and it works great. I have turned the end travel in the radio down to 50% and it is still a little much. This plugs in to the reciever and then gets power off the ignition battery. This works great for me as I have a 3800mha on the ignition. The extra mha was cheap and I figured if I needed it somewhere else I could Buy a cheaper pack for the ignition later on.

RE: The BEST Smoke System
A 300mAh nimh will last for several flights. Three or four every time. The pump by itself in a TME system is not that big a power hog.
The difference between a Slimline smoke muffler and a standard Slimline muffler is the addition of a pre-heat coil (added expense) inside the smoke muffler. Pre-heat is not needed for a gas engine, only for glow. So a stock gasser muffler with a simple fuel nipple near the exhaust manifold is all you need for a gasser.

RE: The BEST Smoke System
The best smoke system is one that will work when needed and will not LEAK and create a mess inside your model, like TME Simple Smoke did on my Yak54.
