RE: Comp-Arf 2.3 with a Brison 3.2
Hey Darcy:
Your signature picture....... Is the an Aerocommander? I am just getting ready to paint a 145" version with twin 50's and been looking everywhere for a scale paint scheme...... That looks interesting.... Can you send me a copy of the picture please?
Concerning the 2.3, I have built four. I have flown this bird with a DA-50 w/ pipe, 3W75I (had extreme vibration problems) 3w80 twin and a BME 110. AUW's from 17 to over 20lbs and they all flew awesome...........

My Composite Extra 2.3 had it's second maiden today. This time with a 3W-75i in front. The power was awesome compared to the 3W-50i that powered the plane before. I'm really glad I switched engines!

That's a 3-blade Engel Supersilence 22x10. The image is from a couple of weeks ago when the 50 was up front.
Today I flew with a 2-blade 3W 24x10 power-to-noice converter I will try a 3-blade Engel 23x12 soon.
These images are from today's session.

Very nice...
I've not decided on the engine yet so if you could I would like to know the exact setup (header, canister, batteries, servos, etc...) you are using and how things are mounted, please. Weight as well if you know it
I have a Da50 and a 3W 80xi-CS, both are in a need of a home and I'm hearing good things about both

I think with a DA you're ending up putting a lot of lead up front anyway.
I had to use 200 grams of lead when I used the 3W-50 (and it was still tail heavy). And that engine is a lot heavier than the DA.
Your 3W-80 is lighter than my 75, so I would say it's perfect for your Extra. The power would be insane!
I can take a picture or two of the radio installation in my Extra tomorrow if you want.
I still use a MTW-TD75K canister even with the 75i. It's a bit small, so I'm careful with the throttle.

Sorry that was a typo. It was a BME 105. Stuffed in pretty well. Only had one small cowl cut for the outer piston plug. I built it for a friend and he put the whole nine yards in it. Dual airleron servos, matchboxes, twin rudder servo's, back up batteries, etc. Same gear you would put in a 2.6. Came out in the 21lb range. Flew suprisingly well. Even had the classic comp-arf flair on landing. Did not have the insane power you would think but obviously had plenty of poop. This plane is amazing. You can have a 5lbs variance in AUW and it will still fly very good.
There is another 2.3 at our field that flys with a 3W53(?) twin and I am amazed how it pulls the plane around. Sweet little engine and of course that twin sound is awesom.

You can buy the K&S pieces from Desert Aircraft to contruct your own header. Manifold, curves, straights, etc. They also have the brazing rod and flex pieces. Just requires and small propane torch. I am no welder but I found this easy to do and not expensive. This way you can make it for your application and get a perfect fit. Give it a try.

Yeah, the 3W-56i B2 is probably one of the best engines for this bird. But it's really ex*****ive! It cost almost as much as the 106!

JOe,
I appreciate the pics. They answer a lot of questions for me. I would have answered sooner but the weather here has been in the low 60's which is unheard of for this time of the year and it's supposed to continue until Christmas so I've been kinda living at the field for the last 2 days

Bubba,
you are welcome. I sure had a good time putting them together, remembering how many good times I had with this plane brings back memories. The amount of time I had with the 2.3 is will soon be surpassed by my 2.6. When I heard of people getting this kind of usage froma an airframe I never thought thery were telling the truth. Now I know what it is like, like having that one tool in your tool box that saves you everytime and makes you leave the other ones at home. It gets worn in all the right spots. !~)
I would never have thought on this maiden day, the plane would have given so much great service.
Have a great time out there while you can.
Joe
