Default Saito 1.80

Has anyone tried to use the crankcase vent to pressurize the fuel tank. I have a slimline pitts muffler on a Saito 1.80 and I am going to put a regulator on it. I don't think that the muffler will generate enough pressure for the regulator. I was thinking of putting the check valve on the crankcase.

Does anyone have experience with this set up?

Has anyone used a regulator with a slimline pitts muffler successfully?

Thanks

Mike

Default 180 w/pitts

I use a 180 with a pitts but no regulator...I'd be concerned about putting the stuff that comes out of the crankcase into the fuel. There was talk of this not too long ago here

RCJones...I have(had) a slimline muffler on my 180 but mouting it was all most impossible because 1 of the flange bolts is in behind the round part of the muffler and I can't get to it...did you get the Slimline muffler and if not could you tell me where I can get one.

You can use a check valve on the muffler.

Or.... you can put a tee into the crankcase vent. Run one side outside. The other line, you run through a check valve to the tank.

Enjoy,

Jim

what about blocking one of the muffler outlets? this would increase the pressure. what and how to plug it?

Default more info

Tell us more about your setup. What kind of plane? Inverted Saito or side mounted? Why a regulator?

A Saito may pickup fuel even without tank pressure. Is the tank far away? on the cg? I have a side mounted slimline pitts. You may have to mount the muffler before you finish installing it on the engine mount but you should be able to reach the bolts.

The Saito 1.80 is side mounted on a H9 Edge 540. I have installed it with a Slimline pitts muffler. The 24 oz tank right now is in front but I intend to later on move the fuel tank back to the CG and also install a smoke system with the tank on the CG.

I had installed a Perry pump because I wanted to see how the Saito worked with it. Well, I did not have good luck with it. The engine seemed like it was not getting enough fuel at full throttle. I did adjust the pressure screw on the pump for maximum pressure.

So I ripped out the Perry pump and I ordered an Iron Bay reulator. This is not in stock and will be 3 weeks before I get it. The person I spoke with at Iron Bay said that the most common cause of problems with using the regulator is not getting enough muffler pressure and that I may want to put the check valve on the crankcase vent.
I have read here in RCU that people were having problems getting enough tank pressure with the Pitts style mufflers and some were blocking one tube outlet.

Are others having problems with this tye of set up?

I have mine is a DP Ultimate and I don't have any fuel draw issues. Its mounted just like yours. i hear that the Cline regulator works better because it supplies fuel when its called for.

Are you having any problems without the regulator? or just trying to prepare for the future?

I haven't run it yet on just the muffler pressure. I plan to use the regulator later on in the future.

Default Curious

I'm curious as to why anyone would use a Pitts style muffler on a fourstroke.

Well, Lets see..... I like the way the exhaust exits the cowl; It has smoke w/ built in preheat; Everyone else has been notching their firewall with the stock muffler; I don't have exhaust all over the plane cause it exits out the bottom;

and the biggest reason is its a hobby and I wanted to!

Default Regulators...

I have 2 of the Cline's and one is on a 2 stroke and the other is on a 4 stroke. Muffler pressure on 4 strokes works fine, remember the pressure is checked and retained in the tank.

From what I know of 4 strokes the crankcase vent is just that, a vent, it sucks air in as the piston rises and blows it out as the piston falls. Blow by from the piston ring does enter the crankcase and the oil that is in it exits theengine through the port. With all that being the case the crankcase on a four stroke isn't exactly a great source for pressurizing the fuel system.
