From: Cincinnati,
OH,
Looking to replace an O/S .46 LA. I see that O/S have a .46 AX, an there's a number of offerings from other manufacturers like Fox, GMS, Magnum, Super Tigre, Thunder Tiger, and YS. I just wanted to get some input. Super Tigre also makes a .51 that I might be interested in.
Any recommendation as to what to buy and/or what not to buy?
Thanks!

If cost is no problem, I would go for a YS63. If cost is a problem, then I would go for the GMS47. The YS is the state if the art in 4-stroke technology, and as far as power goes, oh my! Watch out!!!! The GMS engines are ones that scream very well for the money. GMS has had some trouble in the past though on their Q&C, so beware of the lemon(s)................

For power and affordability, my money goes to the GMS .47
Do a search on GMS .47's and see if I'm the only one that thinks this way.
Good luck,

I can't believe Bill can pimp Magnum, ASP, and GMS above an OS-[X(]
I am not a big OS fan but I have had many and never had a problem with any of them in any way.... It is true that you hear some liners peeling and what not but look how many OS's are out there---
Either way get a TT Pro-46, or Irvine-53- and you'll be set!

When you put your blindfold on, or shave the brand names off the side, you can not tell the difference between the Magnum XLS 46 and the OS 46 FX. Other than the crappy nickel cylinder liner on one, of course. The parts interchange. One sells (sold) for $120, and the other is often on sale for $70. And since the less expensive one has the chromed liner it's not only approx a 45% discount on the other, it is a lot better quality.
I have never heard of an ABC engine shelling its liner.
OS liners regularly go out the exhaust port.
Pimping for Magnum? No. Pimping implies illicit sexual activity. That's what happens when you buy an OS. And this "ABL" OS is bragging about is just another way to say ABN. Forget it.
Too many good engines with ABC liners at 1/2 to 2/3 the price of OS. Use your head. Buy an ABC engine.
Bill.

I will throw my engines int the mix.
I am running right now an "OLD" Super Tigre .45, Magnum .46, broke in and setup a GMS .47, 2 dead O.S. .46, It is a little out of the size range Magnum .52, Antique K&B .40, Sportster .40.
I have more hours and fuel through my old tigre then I care to think about. It still runs very good. It did have a rather long break in period though. The GMS I broke in was so tight I thought it was going to snap the connecting rod the first run. It turned into a screamer of an engine. The Magnum .46 was good right out of a box until I put a pitts muffler on it. The O.S. 's lost the shinny stuff on the in side.
With so many good engines out there, it is hard to choose. If you are not on a tight budget, Ervine, K&B .48. If you need to watch how much you spend, GMS, Super Tigre, Magnum.
Dru.
P.S. The Magnums have a rap for a rich mid range. If you have that problem check the low speed needle for any defects. They will send you a new one.

Bill,
I agree with Razor.I run 2 46fx's hard and 2GMS's hard. They are run on Combat Spads and Spad3d's.they are crashed regulary in sand .The GMS's dont come close in reliability.I have 4 and 5 years on the OS's and 1 and 2 years on the Gms's.I just retired the last GMS yesterday.I dont much care what the liner is made of as long as it runs fine.Magnum XLS46 may be a fine engine but if you think Gms and Asp are better than an OS I would have to strongly disagree.

What I am saying is that OS has too many failures, all the same thing, for me to recommend their purchase. And while My personal chioce is Magnum, there others, probably just as good if not better, and some with lower prices.
I just say do not buy ABN, make sure your new engine is ABC. Or ringed.
Bill.

I stand corrected, sir.
Recently there have been grumblings about some of the TT engines, none concerning the liner, though.
I did not know Webra had used any ABN sets. My one remaining, a Speed 40, is not ABN. It has a Dykes ring and, I think, a plain steel liner.

Through May 15, the Magnums are on sale at Hobby People and Quantum Models. $69 for the .46 and $79 for the 52. Free shipping from Quantum if the order comes to 100 bucks or more. They are temporarily backordered but at that price, who cares. I ordered the .46 and Quantum said the next bunch should be here in about a week. He said they don't even put them on the shelf. They just "flow" through and right on out the door until the next shipment comes. At that price I can see why....:-)

Of all the previously mentioned .46 size engines that I have experience with, The GMS has been the only dog. It made good very good power but dead sticks were too common. It would not shut down so I replaced the bearings and siliconed the carb throat and backplate. This helped for a week or two but the problem resurfaced. It was easy to start, but would flame out during transition. MECOA was no help at all when I called a couple of times for help. I finally gave up on it. The TT and the OSFX have been without problems and provided exceptional power and consistant performance. I just ordered the Magnum .46xls for $69.00 from tower. This looks like a very good deal. It along with the TT comes with a 3 year warranty. That's pretty good.

I am still flying a 46fx
ne of the first shipped in late 1994 and it gets better all the time. I run a 9x7.5 pylon prop on the front of a quickie 500 . It still starts on the first flip and has never been apart. The compression still feels just like my newest one purchased 11 mos. ago. As for the chinese made stuff you can keep it. Their metallurgie is very poor . I tried a magnum a while back and it was great for a while but then I noticed my fire wall was fuel soaked from the leeky front bearing and the carb was constantly falling apart and was always hard to start. I cured the problem by giving it away and replacing it with an OS.

Bill- I was kidding about the "pimping"
Mr Robinson has proven with his many posts to be one of the sharpest engine guys on the board here---
And I have had good luck with Magnum and ASP also- But I have heard soo many horror stories of GMS QC...
What kind of engines have problems at your field?
These are all VERY LOW on my list of preferred engines anyway..

If your after a good OS46 replacement i'd suggest an Irvine 53. Similar Weight, Same dimensions, much more power, better throttling and less money!
If you add a tuned pipe to it you'll get a huge amount of power (and still with good throttling if you choose a good pipe)

My favorite is Irvine (on sell now from www.justengines.unseen.org)
Barring that a Magnum, mecoa TT or supertigre will do
Best regards
Patrick

There is a fellow name of Lorne Mackie in Calgary Alberta Canada ([email protected]) who is selling a Taiwanese engine called a "LEO" in 46 and 61 sizes for extremely reasonable prices ($99.99+9.50 S/H CANADIAN for the 46, and $139.99+9.50 S/H CANADIAN for the 61). I have checked out the website www.leoengines.com and it appears that this LEO 46 is the same engine that was once sold in the US under the name ROYAL, which I have been told got good reviews in its day.
It is an ABC schneurle ported design, looks good on paper and is said to be a very powerful 46. Does anyone have any opinions on this engine? Let me rephrase that - does anyone have any factual information about this engine?

No perspiration. And I actually took advantage of your using the word ""Pimping" to make an implication that the purchase of that ABN engine was equivalent to performing an illicit sexual act on ones self.
Sorry the answer was so delayed, we had a club meeting this evening.

The Leo is the engine sold in the USA under the MECOA brand name. Not too well known, but the people who have them are pleased. Good power and low price.
