First, I squared up the end to perfection, then drilled the hex bar to 8mm, then cut it to about 6.75mm. To my surprise, while drilling it the cuttings came out in great long spiral curly cues. I was expecting steel dust. No noise either.

C1045 Free Machining Steel.
Cuts and threads beautifullly.
I usually use it when making crankshafts.
Heat treatable, very durable.
Sure beats Plain-Jane C1018 !

here you go. but if you look around you may find it cheaper. I have seen prices of $6 different for one foot. same OD.

Yep, round bar is a lot cheaper than than hex stock, especially metric hex , then there is shipping.
I buy all materials locally, the metric bar, and ALL metric hardware, taps etc come from Metrics Unlimited, right across the street from the GM Technical Center in Warren MI. Good prices and no shipping needed

I just ran the above rebuilt 50, it's winner.
Saito 50 painted black by me, with new Boca Bearings and new RMJ ring.
Fuel=======Wildcat 10% full syn
Plug=======Glo-Devil 4c Special
Exhaust====CL muffler, kinda loud
Prop=======Graupner G-Sonic 12 x 6
Idle and max rpm below.

Tomorrow I want to try an HY prop and a a Xoar. HY was formerly Bolly Clubman. And a couple of exhausts.
One cool thing about that muffler, it does the poit, poit, poit thing at idle.

I ran it about 4,500 rpm for 10 minutes, then 6,000 for 20 minutes, then a couple of shots to 9,500 which I thought was going to be the peak. I leaned the HS needle one more click from there, it accelerated, by two more it was making that distinct howl Saitos make at beyond 10,000.

The 150 cylinder that was stuck in Palatine, Il. is now at a post office 3 hours south of here, I just talked to a very sweet lady with a pleasant southern accent. It has all the correct info. on it and still went to wrong place. Go figure.

My sister in-law mailed a package to the UK from Nashville and it spent 2 weeks in Brazil visiting 3 different cities before returning to Nashville and starting the trip over!

2nd prop======Xoar 12 x 6, rpm=10,290
With stock cast muffler and Xoar,==10,290, it required 4 clicks leaner to reach the peak with the cast muffler. The peak was very vague with the CL muffler.
Yesterday was with Graupner G-Sonic 12 x 6, rpm=10,560

hey guys. I sure we all are a bit alike. meaning we all don't have every type of grease made just setting on our shelfs in our shops.
well. I replace the sliding-gibs on my Sherline Mill. I don't want to do that again LOL. Sherline recommends oil to oil the gibs and the metal to metal dovetails on the opposite side of the table. I tried that but knew the oil would drip. and it did. I didn't have a thin grease. but I'm smarter than the average bear. well. so I didn't have to buy some $$$ grease that I knew would be setting around for 15 years or loger I thought I would try something. I took Kendal's SHP auto grease (that I have had setting around for 17 years unopen) and mixed in drop by drop by drop Quaker 80-90 gear Lube. and it mixed up very well and thinned out the grease and as I waited for parts to come I let it set a week and it didn't separate. and it seems to be working slick. yee-up, "slick's" the word.
now I have to find a reason to use the Mill.

It is called "Way Lube" or "Way Oil". Made from long string hydrocarbon stock it is tacky like syrup or honey. That tends to keep it in place on Vee shaped ways and other inclined surfaces. Well worth getting the right stuff for those areas
Only costs a few bucks more and it is purpose made for the job.

Thanks for the test numbers. Hard to know the real differences between the mufflers though since there was no common prop used with both mufflers.??

Smaller pipe into a larger canister provides a decrease in exhaust velocity; loss in velocity, given the same mass, equates to higher pressure. Higher tank pressure means less difference in fuel pressure at the spraybar, level flight vs. vertical. The end benefit is being able to run a leaner mixture which can only mean one thing.......more power in the air. Something I never complain about. I run the "new revised" Saito mufflers for that very reason, even though they don't poit, poit like the straight pipes and they're not very sexy looking.

Yep, the pressure thing is well realized. There are of course other factors aside from just canister volume in the equation. My original inquiry was based on the fact that I usually had higher RPM readings with cast Saito cans over the straight pipes. Not everyone places pure vertical as the main priority however.
For the most part YS may be a better choice than Saito for them. Perhaps a fuel change too.
However, I must have missed where Dave posted the identical RPM numbers for the Saito cast muffler and thr CL pipe with Xoar prop ???

The only difference I see between the early cast and the revised is the tail cap no longer is tapered, I moded this one myself.
I put this end cap in the lathe for a couple of minutes.

The 150 cylinder I bought has still not arrived, it is currently in Richmond for the third time, it went 150 miles south of here from Richmond to the wrong post office, came back to Richmond, then went 200 miles south of here to another wrong post office, now it is in Richmond again and supposed to be on it's way here. Someone mentioned the valves and springs the other day, they look pretty good in this picture, that'll save me $106.00. The rockers look good too.

This should be a good lookin Saito 56 in a few minutes.
Keeping the paint on the outside, just some stuff within reach.
Almost done, new Boca Bearings, new RMJ ring, new lifters, the rest is used but good.
