The H9 Corsair and Mustang are good flyers also.

Jim, I'm building a BTE Venture 60 which is almost like a 4*. I was going to use a 91 but the front of the engine stuck out a mile (exaggerated) in front of the nose. Tried several different engine mounts but couldn't get it to fit to my likeing. Maybe I'm too fussy. I've looked at Tower's selection but I'd be shooting in the dark as far as being sure that the engine would fit properly. As for the type of sport plane I like, anything along the lines of the Venture or 4*. I was hoping someone in Club Saito had a sport plane with a 100 in it that they could recommend. I've been out of the hobby for 10 years and getting back into it now is like starting all over with all the selections available especially the bARFs

Tailskid, thanks for the input, but I'm not ready for a Warbird yet.

Larry, I flew my V 60 with a Saito .72, I don't remember the .72 sticking out, I'm sure that it and the .82 are shorter than the .91. I no longer have a .72 or .91 to compare. On occasion I have ground the corner off of a mount to get a fourstroke closer to the firewall.

I've been flyin since march or april of 2002, and im not ready for warbirds either. lol Flew my friend Mustang once, and compared to a biplane, it was like throwing a rock ! What fun is that ? I tried to slow it down into the wind, and it was tip stalling SOB ! I love biplanes because they look cool, fly great, land slow, don't tip stall, and they have a built in handle ! lol

Birman,

I spoke to one of our club members. He flies a Twist, Uproar, Tiger, and a Hobbico Sukhoi all with the Saito 1.00 and has had not problems with mounting. These are all 60 size planes. I have the Sukhoi with an OS 91FX. It is a good flying airplane. All of these would have plenty of power with the 1.00. Just considerations!

freeonthree,

I agree with you on the bi-planes but sometimes you just have to let loose with some speed!

I must be gettin old... I hardly ever use full throttle, except for taking off. Landing is my favorite part of the hobby... I probably land 10 times per tank, just looking for that perfect touchdown and rollout. Thats my joy ! Flying is fun too, but landing is the berries !

Birman, I had the same problem with a Saito 65- too far from the firewall. I used a Dave Brown mount (my favorite), I cut out part of the ring that goes against the firewall. This allowed the engine to slide back on the mount. Now the carb is almost touching the firewall.
Have fun, MikeB

Thanks Mike. I have a Dave Brown mount for the 91. I'll see how it fits. Have you had any problem with mount fatigue after cutting it?

Saito 100
Can anyone give me instructions on how to correctly set the ignition timing on my Saito 100?
I changed out the Main and Front bearings and found a timing mark on the cam, but not on
the crank shaft. The engine started and ran, but at only 5500 r.p.m. Can you help me?

Thats valve timing... with the crank at TDC, the dot on the cam gear goes straight down. You must have yours off a tooth or two. I hold the cam gear with a razor blade as I lower the cam cover into place. Also, the dot on the connecting rod faces the front of the engine. Also, if you ever remove the piston from the cylinder, make sure you put the ring gap back in exactly the same place.

Birman, I don't have the 65 powered plane in the air. I did the same with a Saito 45 and have not had any problems after many flights. The removed piece looks more like dead weight than anything structural. Just leave anough meat around the mounting holes. I have modded alot of these mounts without problems.
Good luck, MikeB

I talked to Horizon yesterday about my .82. First, they found the piston was chipped just under the ring. I don't know how that happened, and I'm not sure I like the thought that a piece of aluminum was bouncing around the inside of my engine. Then again, it could have come from the factory like that and nothing at all was in my engine. So, I'm guessing they replaced the piston. Hopefully they replaced the ring as well. As far as the valve leak goes, the tech who was working on my engine told me that he polished up the valves and they were now sealing perfectly. The valve seats were fine and he did not do anything to them. I'd prefer the engine have been replaced, due to the chip in the piston, but the guy said he found no other damage in the engine at all.

It was all covered under warranty.

Hopefully when I get it back there won't be any problems.

Birman,

I am presently building my third Venture 60. Lost the first one to a loss-of-radio-link accident in the fall. It has been too chilly and windy here this spring to break out #2, and #3 is nearly complete. Mine flew with a Saito .82.

I have thought that a sport plane for a Saito 1.00 or 1.25 would be very nice. Actually, I have thought that a Venture 125 would really be fun. Maybe Bruce Tharpe will have some time to scale it up. I wonder how much demand there would be for it?? I wonder how many Four Star 120s Sig sells, or how well the large Goldberg Tiger (at least that's what I think it is called) sells.

Bruce Tharpe sells a Sig two-piece engine mount for the V60 on his website and it can probably be found in many different places. I used one of those mounts with a Saito .50 with no trouble at all.

Good luck with your V60, they are nice-flying sport planes, you will probably be very happy with it. The only little quirk I noticed with mine is its tendency to pitch down with power back and a lot of fuel in that 16 ounce tank. It may just be my relative inexperience and not something a more experienced modeler would notice. Don't be afraid to hold the nose up with a bit of back-stick when you pull the power back. A Venture will slow down to almost a crawl before it will stall. But, it will pick up speed when it drops its nose. My first landing was exciting!!! Anyway, slow it down one mistake high and you will see what I mean.

Let us know how things go. A Saito is a nice way to power a Venture.

rimcnii, I wish I had an 82 for the Venture. I recently bought a 91 (which was supposed to be for the Venture) and a 100 that I was going to put in a Great Planes 1/4 RV-4. The 100 wouldn't fit without chopping up the cowl. Had to buy an OS 91 FS II for the RV-4. Right now I've kinda exceeded my limit on engines. I've got to buy a few things for the wife in order to keep peace in the family.

I do want to find a plane for the 100 soon though. Flying season is fast approaching in SE Wisconsin.

You can mount a 1.00 on the V60 inverted and make a balsa cowl for it. They look really sharp when done this way. Do a search on RCU and you'll find lots of pictures. Modding the V60 is very common.

Was it the same "radio link" that I often lose----the one between my head and my thumbs?

scratchonly,

No, it was not that link. I wish it had been and then I would know for sure what had happened. I think I flew too low over an electric fence, which I did not know was there, and it may have caused the problem.

It was at a field that was new to me and none of the experienced people had mentioned the fence. Although, they did tell me afterwards that several planes had been lost in the same place.

I don't know enough RF theory to know if a field generated by an electric fence would do that.

Got new bearings in the Saito .82 that hit the ground first, however. So, all was not lost.

I have, on occasion, lost the link between head and thumb!!!!

Our electric fence only puts out little quick bursts of power at maybe 1 second intervals, but that one may be different.

If they arc they put out a lot of hash throughout the radio spectrum.

The first CW (morse code) transmitters were spark gap. I guess back then you transmitted on all freq's at the same time. lol
