Dave, thanks for the note. Sent pm. Haven't changed the email address.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone.

Now back to discussing Saito's! Sadly, one area to check when planning to fit an engine into a project is the length of the engine. I had a 100GK ready to go into a Scale project. Unfortunately, it was about 5mm too long to fit under the cowl... Keep the length of the engines in mind when you plan an enclosed engine installation. I'll have to see if a 91 is shorter, but I don't think it will fit either.

Bill and everyone,
The rear bearing recently failed on my Saito 1.00.
While I'm waiting to hear from Horizon I've been thinking...
Am I doing the wrong thing the way I store the plane it's on?
I take the wing off and hang the fuselage by the tail on the garage wall.
This hangs it nose down with the engine draining itself in to the crank bearings.
Is this bad?
Thanks!

does sig have at least 18% oil John, other than that all i do is make sure i run the engine dry at the end of each session and put in a good amount of air tool oil through the crank vent and spin the prop a bunch to distribute and store with the plane sitting on my workbench upright(engine inverted),i also spin the prop each time i walk by

hope this helps
good luck!!

Gary,
Yes, the jug says oil content 20%.
I wonder if I shouldn't remove the engine when I think I won't be flying for a couple weeks.
It's hard to tell since we just moved here and I'd hate to miss the occaional nice day this winter.
The previous 3 years we lived in Lincoln, Nebraska.
I remember last Christmas Day it was the warmest place in the country.
60 something degrees!
Of course I hadn't started back flying then.
I have started going thru my 2 strokes from 20 something years ago.
Bill has put me on to some great sources for rings and bearings.
I just finished one and after I tested it I ran it on several shots of WD40 then loaded it up with Marvel Mystery Oil.
The Saito would be a lot more trouble to get the cowl off each time and get MMO into the intake, breather and rockers. It may come to that though.

Tom:

As all the late valves I've bought are already installed in engines, and I didn't want to strip one to measure the groove, I hope you will forgive me for measuring the collet (from a spare set of springs) instead. Haw. The collet is 1.5 mm thick where it goes into the groove.
Thanks Bill, now can you measure the ID of the two collets? Haw!

You have a $300 engine, why fuss about the cost of a set of valves?
Oh, I don't fuss about the cost. I just like the challenge!

with the upgrade on the retainers the clips are no longer supplied.
You're kidding! You mean to tell me standard metric c-clips won't fit?

I suspect also that at least part of the "Gumming" of your valve stems was the hammered ridge. Now that everything is cleaned up
Whoa! Wait till I get around to cleaning it, lol...

Hi Guys
No offense but I am getting too many emails from this site.
I only want to get replies to my posted questions. Not an email every time someone posts something. How do I change this. Can not seem to figure it out. And while I'm at it why can one not start a completely new thread? All other forum I belong to allow this?
Cheers

How long did it take for this thread to reach 36 pages?? I'm thinking not too long!!

So much information. Seems like everytime I come back to check up on it, there are 1-2 more pages I have to read, and enjoy doing!!

WOW.....that's intersting.

I have a question, what is better for 4-stroke engines. I guess I should say what is better for SAITO engines. Castor, Synthetic, or a mixture of both. I run Coolpower 15% 18% lube. Used to run Byron 10-15%. What's better, and why. Why isn't the other one good?

Thanks

or click on settings in the yellow menu and under subscription preferences, click 'Notify me once per thread until I visit the thread again' or 'Notify me once per thread until I visit the thread again or until I visit the board the next time' i don't think you can get notified to just you're questions or replies.

Just bought my first Saito (100) going on an Ultra Stick. What do I do with the breather nipple in the back plate? I thought that this was a simple pressurized system. I would like to fly this tomorrow if anybody could help me on this Thanksgiving Day I would be grateful.

Happy Thanksgiving,

Anaconda

Interesting about the 50 Hobbsy. What year did they make those? Same size as the more popular 56?

anaconda:

Just put a length of fuel hose on the back plate nipple and run it down and out. The excess engine oil will blow out of it.

Next time I open the listing I'll add your name.

Bill.

I love Saito engines. I have 16 engines but much to my dismay only 4 of them are Saito's. I will be thinning out my inventory and investing in more of them.

The Saito 50 is basically the same exterior size as the 56. Saito still makes them but Horizon quit selling them last year. I think they came out around 96 or 97? The 50 has the same stroke as the 56 but the 56 has the same bore as the 65.

I would like to apply for membership in "Club Saito". I'm currently flying 6 with 7 more in reserve. If I qualify I would like to join under the name Fred B. I have an '82 that pulls a 14x6apc about the same as my '91 but I think the 91 is my all around favorite.

Genesis, that is totally awesome!

How did you attach the CPU fan to it? I might need to do the same with the FA40 I want to put into a boat.

-Tom

Thanks Tom,

Sorry for the late reply. I simply JB-welded the fan and a spacer made from the "nose cone" of another fan to the back of the flywheel. Make sure to roughen the surfaces.
