They cannot tune your engine. Altitude and temperature require tweaking of the mixture. If it is stumbling on transition, richen the low end. If it's too hot, then you might have it over-propped or not enough air flow for cooling or you might be running it too lean on the high end.

They ran it with a 11x7, I have/ had an 11x8. Fuel is same except brand. 15% nitro, 18% oil. I use byruns. That's the brand around here. It could be over proped with the 11x8 so I'll throw the 11x7 back on, ritchen it back up and try again..

No in a since they can't tune it, however they are same area as me so it should be close!!! If I ritchen it up up top it stumbles, lean it out and it doesnt want to run enough rpms.. and is hot . So if the low end is too lean would that cause it to stumble full throttle? I'm gonna try with it set like they sent it to me with the 7* prop and go from there. I know everything else is good, matter of getting it tuned.

Hibradharvy,the only way to test your engine is to haveEVERYTHING exactly the SAME.

If your fuel is a different brand, it's not certain to be the SAME. There are plenty of reports indicating that different brands of synthetic oil give different results, and some commercial fuels may have 2-3% castor oil added. The label may not tell you...

The bigger pitch prop will load the engine differently, affecting throttle response (even the same pitch, different brand).Temperature, humidity, and especially barometric pressure, will make a big difference. Similar geography, but 24hr is a long time on a weather map.

Unfortunately, there are so many variables that the chance of your test conditions being the same as HH's are about zero... I think you need to start the tuning process over again.

I'm not new to Saitos' since I own three 1.80s and they all run fine however my newest addition a 2.20 will not idle for over thirty seconds. The engine is mounted on its' side swinging a 19X8 zoar prop. I'm using a OS "F" plug and Byron 20/20 fuel. The tank is mounted below the c/l of the carb about 1.5" and the fuel draw from the tank is about 5.5". As of today I have run over 1 gal of fuel through the engine and the top end and transition are fine. High idle is about 2100 rpm and when I go lower it just slows down and dies. I stumpped!

If it's a light wood prop it may not idle low well.Got me stumped too mine pulls around 8 on a 20x8 mas classic and idles at 1500 easy.

I've been away for a while, but it's good to see some of the same people are still here and active. I haven't flown in a couple of years, but I think I'm going to start working on my Beaver conversion project again and fire up my .40a and see how she goes. Listening to that little jewel hum should get me motivated. Is anyone flying one of these? Eventually I'll have to figure out how to prop the Beaver. I got the best static thrust with the MA 12x4 so far.

Flycatch..I have the same engine / Saito 220 Nitro...my tank centerline is also 1- 1.5 inches below the main jet..probably same amount of distance ( 5 inch) from the tank.
I have however installed glow to start mine and to help with reliable idle......Mine runs fine on the ground and idles and well transitions nicely but I have had 4 dead sticks out of 6 flights...with unfortunate consequences...20 hrs repairs later I am ready for the next trails this weekend I hope.
I have been reading here that larger Saitos seem to have to be on the rich side in flight ( wher as OS you can just back off a bit from lean)...so this will be my moto from now on. I'm new to Saitos.
I am also swithing to a Vess 20 / B wooden prop tp see if that makes any difference ( 100 grams lighter) ...was using a Master heavy composit prop. before.
If it helps in any way I can tell you how many turns out my Low idle screw is..as I say... transition is fine

I attempted once again to get a reliable idle and wasted 1/2 gal of fuel. Tommorrow I'm going to install a device called a SwitchGlo. This igniter is powered by the airborne flight pack and you can turn it on/off using a channel on the receiver that is not in use. Like I said I have three Saitos 180s and they presented no problem what so ever. It appears that no one besides yourself and another would take the time to provide any information.

Finally got my saito 56 running! I understand it will need tunning even after HH redoes it all and runs it in on there bench, And said it ran great. It should however HAVETHEBARRELSECURED! The screw holding the barrel was not in enough and while I was test running it, my brother noticed the barrel dropping when wide open!! Nice service HH. Oh well, quick fix and now it runs great. 10000 rpms out of a 11x7...

Can you move the fuel tank up a bit? on the 220 and tune it like that.Mine is very docile but will be pumping it in a mew gull because it will be inverted and the tank will be about 300mm behind the engine.I;m assuming you've tried every easy thing to fix it like lines and tank fittings

Flycatch, I don't know what's going on with your 220, but I did notice in an earlier post you stated that it would only go to 1/2 throttle then throw the prop. What did you do to fix it? I've noticed that sometimes people get the needle settings all messed up by adjusting the low speed needle before the high end is leaned out. Maybe start all over with everything rich and try again? I had a problem with my .180 but it was the opposite. the tank was higher than the carb with the engine inverted. It would siphon and flood. I ended up using a Cline regulator and I couldn't be happier. I've had it idling with no heat for 1 minute at about 1260. Didn't sound smooth, but it did it. In the plane with an onboard glow that shuts off 4 clicks above idle it will idle all day at 1500 and I set it at 1800 or so to fly.

I need Guidence !!!!!!!!!!!!!! My old faithfull "saito 65" barked and stalled at near full throttle !!! was running a 14x4 W apc. rich n leaving a good smoke trail. The exhaust rocker arm broke in half right across the two little notches for the rocker cover bolts. Now The problem. I have gathered its a "g" rocker arm.. "saitos letter designation" I can't find one. Is there another rocker that would work?? I have hunted until i am ...........well Tired. Any ideas.

The rocker arms for the 50,56,62,65,72,82,91,100 I thought were all the same? the part # is SAI5041

The Saito 65 can swing a 14x4 prop? Wow! I can't get that from the OS 70 nor the TT75.

Yeah, love my Saito 82 and 125!! My YS 70 turns the 14x4W prop nearly 1000 rpm more than the Saito 82 though and will probably be happy with a 15x4W if I would go to the 20% nitro YS fuel. I've just run 15% Omega in the YS so far breaking it in.

Well I have ordered a set of bearings to replace them in my 65. She runs okay but you can hear the bad bearings so I'm sure they need replacing. If not then I'll learn how anyway. Been poking around looking for step by step instructions and think I know enough without damaging it. Biggest thing I'm concerned with is getting all back together properly. Bearings should be here in a few days so guess I'll dive right in. I was surprised there wasn't more on youtube or here on tutorials on Saitos but from what I've seen I can do it till hit a snag then ask here. You haven't failed me yet. Love those Saitos. Just bought a used 91 (my biggest yet) to go on a Thunderbolt and can't wait to get it hung and running. Wish me luck!
