Is it possible the engine went lean in the air from a loss of muffler pressure or dirt in the needle valve? Did you have a fuel filter installed between the tank and the carb? Was there any scoring or galling of the piston or cylinder?
This wasn't one of thier top of the line engines, I would write it off and look for another on Ebay.

I believe 'Bone' and 'Skypilot_one' have the right idea ...... I would strongly consider their advise except that I would go over to the 'Tower Hobbies' website and order me one of those $50.00 "SuperTigre' engines, this with a GOOD two year (or is it 3 years now) warranty that will be honored in the future. Keep your Enya .40 carburetor just in case you have problems figuring out the 'SuperTigre' carburetor's alleged woes! I promise you that the 'SuperTigre' is a much higher quality engine than is the 'Enya 40SS' engine, not to mention the much greater $$value$$ for the $$dollar$$, nearly instant parts availability, dependable warranty service, and most likely superior Power Output.

they aren't producing huge quantities like OS so i'd say it costs them a good bit more than $10 a unit...
don't care either way, only engine i was interested in is the .11CX and they lost me as customer by switching it from AAC to ABC.

The net residual cost (the cost to manufacture an additional unit) of this engine to Enya is, I believe, in the vicinity of $10...
All the rest is profit to the entire chain, from the manufacturer, the exporting unit, the US distributor and the hobby shop, which makes up the [link=http://www.enya-engine.com/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1_4&product s_id=279]total street-price of this engine[/link] of about $128.
It would be terribly stupid of Enya not to honor the warranty given by what was previously its US distributor...
Just having this thread here probably cost them several potential sales.
But Brian does have a point there. Maybe crash damage can be covered by warranty, but use of the wrong fuel may be a problem.

Time passes and the world changes.
I recently bought one of their (Enya Direct) Enya .11CX engines, forgetting that they had gone to ABC. Nope, haven't ran it as yet, but am disappointed that it did not come with the AAC piston/liner. The AAC aspect of the CX engine line was the only reason for buying the CX engines. I'll pay for my lack of attention to details. I may be worrying for no reason. Time will tell.
It appears that once the founder of the company (an assumption on my part) is no longer involved in the company, things have changed. The hard won reputations that were gained over many decades must be re earned by the new folks in charge. I hope that Enya has not gone the way of OS with the passing of Mr. Ogawa.
Altec Marketing's "crash damage warranty" appeared to be an act of desperation. Perhaps they figured it cheaper to just replace such an engine than to pay for advertising? Speculation on my part, but a stupid move on their part. That was not a confidence builder. I would not expect any manufacturer to honor such a ridiculous warranty claim.
I truly hope that the new folks at Enya continue the wonderful tradition of Enya engines. Ken is accessible, so that is a terrific start.

Bone... you recommend that I run all of my 8 Enya's on castor ? what brand...? what oil content..? You do not use syn or syn/castor on any of your many enya's??? or do you have a special fuel for each engine that you fly...? You are running castor only on your 4 strokes? I hope you are able to answer these questions and be a helpful contributor to this forum not just a shot in the dark...
The main point here is that the engine is sold but not garenteed.... the break in suggestion from Enya does not, does not, state that you must use only a castor lub... I ran that engine with castor only for one year plus extra castor in that gallon... I switched to the PowerMaster 15/18 castor/syn mix a year back and run all of my engines on that fuel... they perform beautifully and are run rich, maybe too rich but they are in fine shape... Only this one engine seemed to have a problem... I have talked to others who have had this engine break down similiar to my engine... I question that this engine may have a manufactor's problem... I do not know... but 8 other Enya's run fine and without problems... same fuel... only one breaks?

TO: everyone else.... very good suggestions and I do intent to buy me a Super Tigre... I have a friend who flies several of their 45's and they are strong! This enya is the last Enya for me until we have a solid distributor in the USA..... I love and will take care of my Enya's... I have several 60's and a couple of 4 strokes.... My best engine may be my old 40 CX.... I run it on an Avastar and it screams... has been for years.... does knife edges (not very well) and beautiful outside loops.... My favorite airplane and engine to fly in bad conditions.... wind, weather or low light.... never a hic up... The old CX is great... Thanks again and off I go to buy a new super tigre... Richard

There is little doubt in my mind that this particular Enya .40SS was indeed defective in either material, design, or manfucture processes ..... the one thing that I never did and still do NOT like about Enya Engines is the 'forged' (or is it 'cast') rods that they use and I have a hunch that your rod let go thus causing the piston to distort and seize ..... this just my opinion. I have serious doubt that the engine was run too lean or with inadequate lube in the fuel. Order up your Supertigre and forget about this paticular Enya engine. Say, what vintage of Enya .60 engines do you have ..... I have fairly recently bought up about half a dozen of the earlier baffle-piston type Enya .60 engines, three of which are the 7033 version and one is the even earlier 7032 version. I also have one of the very earliest Enya .60 Typhoon engines with the six bolt front housing. What type of craft do you fly your Enya .60 engines in? I bought my baffle-piston type Enya .60 engines to use in the SAM type Old Timer and Nostalgia era models.

Altec/MRC used to buy the most expensive advertizing for these engines in either the front inside or back inside and back cover of magazines.
It was the manufacturers problem of charging too much for the product, not keeping up with the times, and other manufacturers coming out with new models that buried Enya.
Enya was the tops in the 80's but not much changed from then to now except a reduction of models and lowering of quality.
The fault didn't lay with Altec, they liked the Enya products and provided excellent support. There was a post from the original importer of Enya several years ago that explained a few things.

I have to admit that the times that I dealt with MRC and the gang, I always received premium service - but always at premium prices.
If the Enya company was that difficult to do business with, then perhaps they should have dropped them a long time ago. But they did not, which makes me curious.
All I know is that I treasure my Enya engines and will continue to collect and enjoy them. It would be nice if I could buy parts for the ones that I already have, but I guess that would be asking too much of a good thing.
Anyone having an AAC version of the .11CX that they would part with contact me via PM.

Ed,
MRC had a huge Enya parts inventory, enough parts to assemble and sell engines before finally giving up. They had a long history with Enya. I think you always found it was the parts prices that were high not the labor.
I have great respect for Carol, Tim and Mr. Enya.
I'm happy I found a few 60XL aac engines, both pumped and regular nib. Though dated and heavy by todays standards, they are the best 60 size glow engines ever made, excellent carbs, aac, stainless bearings etc. They were also the most expensive, SELLING for over $330.00 back in the day.

I have the three 60X Enya ( Model 7101) with the special carburators that have the slide mid-range adjustment on two of these engines.... I also have the Enya 80X with the special carburator.... The 80X is in a Astro Hog Bipe but is a little two strong and I am replaceing it with a 70 FS.... The other 60X is in a SuperSportster, 60 size, and both run and fly great... I am retiring my old Astro Hog (single wing) that has a 60X... I am slowly moving my 60 size and up to 4S engines.... 70 FS and 90 FS.... I have a new in the box Enya 60FS that I can not decide on what airplane to fly it... It is a beauty... I may sell it and buy me another 70FS....

Frankly, I never had to buy that many parts from them and I never once had to send an Enya back for service, so I never took advantage of their free labor.
Frankly, Enya did not need to update many of their engines, as far as I'm concerned. Their .60 and .80 four-strokes were/are still fantastic. Their AAC engines have yet to be topped by more modern designs in my applications. I just went through a buying phase of used Enya engines via auction sites and have accumulated quite a few of their CX and .60-.80 four-strokes. I'm set, as far as I'm concerned.
Not changing engines just for the sake of stirring up more sales is a plus as far as I'm concerned. A few comparison based advertisements by MRC would have generated more sales of existing engine designs. In fact, I'm not sure that they did not do this at one point.
A few distributors had unreasonable policies regarding selling to hobbyshops some years back. They made it difficult for a small town hobbyshop to stock their products due to financial constraints. I have been told that two of the worst were Ace and MRC. This is the reason I have always felt that Enya engines were not as popular as other engine brands, not the higher price. Folks will pay more for higher quality. I do/did.

Enya's AAC is a rather subtle change, also used by Nelson and Jett in their up-market models, but this is a drop-in change, which can be incorporated into any current ringed, or non-ringed engine.
So is ABN, on its various varieties (a change for the worse)...
Look what is happening with other manufacturers:
Webra's .40-.61 engines, the basic models are all the same as they were in the late '70s (some new models were introduces in different displacements). The #1024 .61 is still the same engine, with the same TN, or Dynamix carburettor and so is the #1030 Racing. The 'Long Stroke' hype was a temporary malady...
No drastic changes in the .40-.50 engines either.
The mufflers (which used to come apart) were changed, though.
If something works right, why change it?
Super Tigre? Changes have been made to overcome previous shortcomings.
External changes were incorporated, when going from S to G and to GS models, but many parts interchange.
MVVS? New carburettors, since the earlier ones did not run well, sleeve porting changes and crankshaft threads were changed to larger sizes. All else remained the same.
YS? Now they concentrate on four-strokes, but the .45 is the same as it was 25 years ago.
OS? From the FSR, to the SF, to the FX and now to the AX... Can someone truly say that the AX is better than the FSR?
I don't think so...
But like the new Corolla, some companies need to stir up sales every few years, just to prove they are still there...
From the marketing point of view it may work well, but from the hobbyist's standpoint, you would typically just pay more and get the same... Aren't you ashamed to be using last year's model???

Richard39,
When you get to the Richmond R/C USA Catalog Page scroll down in the left column until you get to:
-------------More Items
On-Line Ordering of over 3800 RC Items! ---------------------
Click on there and it will take you to a long list of suppliers ...... then scroll go down to:

But alas beware, make sure to call for supply verification before ordering, as they all too often do NOT have everything in stock as shown on their website.
P.S. Thanks for posting your Enya .60 doings ..... I was sort of hoping that you (or someone) might still be running the old baffle piston Enya .60 Engines?

I've got the 60X with the mid range carb but running at 13.5:1 compression for zero nitro. That really made a difference to it. My son has the 80X which he uses regularly and they're both one flick starters. Then there's the model 6001 45, the model 6002 40 and 45, a couple of the old PB 35's, a 35 BB Special....

The AAC and stainless bearings were big selling features for Enya. Since they have dropped the AAC and ss bearings in the two strokes they have fallen behind farther. As far as I know the only engine they now carry with ss bearings is the .53 four stroke.
It's kind of funny how Schnurle (sorry Dar) porting had been around since the thirties but everyone wanted to wait for the patents to run out.

I now know why I have not received a reply from MRC. I am after a tappet adjusting screw. does anyone have any suggestions. On the castor oil, I have 600 engines (mad collector) ,use 20% castor in two strokes and 5% castor plus 15% syn in fourstrokes, never any problems. A bit R/S on Enya warrenty, no one will ever prove conclusively what caused the problem. John

Hello colin and teresa; Try Steve Webb (in the UK) for your parts problem. I had a valve adjuster break on one of my old open rocker Enya 40's. Steve had the replacement part for me. The lady I talked to was very knowledgeable, and I got the part in a week. I don't remember what the cost was, but I do remember that it was very reasonable.
I tried hollowing out an allen screw head, and it worked, but I'm glad I have the right part in there now.

Well..there certainly are a bunch of Enya fans here..I am re-entering the C/L scene after a long nap..20 years..funny, huh...anyway...have a herd of older 60's era Enya engines...Learned the hard way running this crappy "new" fuel on one of my old Super Tigres G-21..it just slowed to a crawl and stopped...Verdict..? Not enough castor...!! have new bearing ordered from Boca..but would like to replace piston/sleeve ..anyone know where I can find one..I was given a .35 Enya 5224 R/C engine..has carb...where can I get inserts to take the carb off..put the insert in.. and use for C/L flying..also would like to get some new old style Enya needle valve assemblies..or maybe just the needle valves...Anyone know where to look...These Enyas of the past are tough cookies....Wish I had more of them...maybe on Ebay...
thanks for the help..I know someone has to know where to look for the items I want...
Happy Flying.....joe
