I have nothing against a work stand, but...what's the real benefit? Under what conditions does it come in handy? I'm not mocking or arguing, I'm truly curious. Or maybe if I had one I'd discover it for myself. PVC is cheap...

And as stated above, I don't see how you can work on these without one. (IMO)

Got my stuff at Home Depot, holy cow is that stuff cheap! $1.29 for a 10' stick of 1/2", about $0.20 per fitting, under $6 total! Nice, just gotta throw it together.

I built one out of PVC pipe about two or so months ago, found the same guide somewhere on the net. I sprayed mine black, a bit of advice though, use a gloss spray paint, the matt one tends to come off to easily when scratched.

WOW! About 10 minutes on the radial arm saw and another 3-4 to assemble. That's about the easiest RC project I've ever done! Thanks a ton for the original post! The only thing I changed was shorted the 4" pieces to 3.5" so they were all the same to simplify cutting. I don't think the loss of a half-inch on each side of the base will matter.

Thanks! It's a not-very-original Savage 21 from 2003. Needs a lot of TLC, but that'll happen after I get the other one built.

I actually extended the 1.5" pieces to 2", the 3.5's to 4" the 4's to 5" to get a little more working height, and, to get a wider stance on the stand, tried to go to 9" instead of 8.5" but, that puts the uprights directly under the arms....

The low cost and versatility of this design is amazing! I've got 32" of straight pipe left over to make adjustments if I want, or maybe I'll get another 10' stick for $1.29 to have on hand. Not gluing it together is definitely the way to go.

well, here's a new pic of my lengthened design in use....
freshly rebuilt truck, with the bugs worked out (I hope) now just to reset the motor to factory and try to tune it in....need to get a fuel filter for it....or a small pump if there's such a possibility without it being a potential source for headache....

Are you guys just using the regular PVC adhesive to put these together? i plan to grab the parts today to do this. Other than the pipe and fittings what other things should I look at grabbing to make this go smooth?

no adhesive at all, that way you can change pieces out as needed.
the only thing I can think of that would have made this go smoother would have been some form of a high temp knife or something of the like so cutting the PVC wouldn't have made such a horrible mess with the dremel or hack saw....

I didn't glue mine either, and I'm glad. The parts fit snugly together, but will come apart if you want them to.
Use a power saw! A jigsaw should be fine if you can hold the pipe still. A stationary saw would be better, like a table saw, radial arm saw, bench-mounted jigsaw, band saw, etc. The nice thing is that since the pipes will be 3/4" into the fittings, rough angular cuts won't show. [8D]
