I just built a new computer this past week and WOW is it fast. In AFPD I am getting frame speeds of 180FPS as compared to 50FPS before. My internet downlaod speeds are approaching 1MB/sec compared to 200kb/sec before. Computer runs smooth as silk.
Problem is that I cant fly but about 10-30 seconds without AFPD locking up on me. The music and picture will just hang up and make a bunch of noise until AFPD shuts back down into the main menu screen. Is there anything I can do? I installed the latest drivers for my graphics card and I re installed the patch.. Any other suggestions?
Pentium 4 3.0GHz Motherboard
1024MB RAM
BFG Ge Force 5500FX OC 256MB DDR Graphics card... this card worked ok in my other computer, just a lot slower
??

do you still have another graphic card lying around?...if you do put it in and see how that works
try using some older drivers for your video card
do you have the up dated drivers for your chipset installed?

I dont have another graphics card. The graphics card did work before, however the 1st thing I did before I ever ran AFPD was go out and get the newest drivers from NVidia. I will try rolling back to an older set of drivers and see.
One thing I did not do was update the drivers for my chipset. Its a brand spanking new motherboard but I will go out online and see if there are any updated drivers out there.

There is a possibility that you need updated sound card drivers. Improper or outdated drivers for the sound card will give you the same type of problem. If the video card worked before with no problems then I wouldn't think it would give you a problem now. The video card doesn't know or care what its connected to, its job is to do video. Hope that helps

Yes I have a sound card in a PCI slot. It was in use with the same hard drive on my previous PC.

AdAware

Nothing extra, the system is virgin. Just brought it online night before last.

This is a first Ned. I wish I could help, but this is something that looks like needs to be tweaked on the user side.
You have to go through all your video settings, not just upload the driver, but look at Open GL settings and anything out of the norm.
Do you run any other hi end games?

yea if you have other sims or games that require hardware similar too AFPD try them and see what happens
if you know how to..pull out the sound card and enable sound in the bios...could be a sound card issue..also check in the bios and make sure onboard sound is disabled when you are using the sound card
did you try uninstalling/installing AFPD....i doubt that will make the difference but it's worth a try

another thing you could try is if your soundcard is in the next slot to the video card move the sound card away from it......how many avaible slots do you have on your mobo?

Yes the sound card and Video card are adjacent but I have about 4 more PCI slots available for the sound card. The Video card is in its AGP slot. Im stuck with that. I will try some of these things when I get home.
THanks!

Most motherboards that I've seen usually show that the AGP slot and the first PCI slot are shared. I'd move the sound card to the 2nd or 3rd PCI slot. You can refer to your MoBo manual for the slot information to be sure.

OK I have made some progress. I lowered my screen resolution from 1024x768 to 640x480 and moved my sound card out of the slot right next to the graphics card and the locking up has improved. Now it only locks up if I get the plane in close, I mean real close. My frame speed has jumped from 50FPS to 180FPS and I cant really tell the difference in the screen quality at a lower screen resolution its very good either way.
Also, there is something weird I didnt notice on my old computer. The stripe that runs down the far side of the runway is flickering, its not solid. If you let the plane sit on the runway it will eventually get still, but its sortof like a ripple on water, it flickers as the plane is moving but it slowly comes to a stop as the screen gets completely still.. Weird.

When I first read your post I thought of a typical heat issue. If you need a sound card then move it to another slot. Otherwise use the on board if you can
Then try another graphic game to test the vid card. If it games good with a serious game i.e. UT2k3 or Half Life type game then heat is not the cause. If it does hang up in few minutes remove the side cover and use a fan blowing in the case while using the sim. If it then works its time to move more air through the case[8D] You've got a strong rig and if the PS is not up to par that to can cause lockups/BSOD's'

Could possibly be heat but I already have a pretty significant cooling system. I have heat syncs on my RAM cards, a fan mounted to the heat sync on my processor and a case fan. Im moving a good bit of air through the case but its still real warm coming out.
Like I said the funny thing is now, I can fly all day as long as I dont bring it in close. If the plane gets within 10 feet or so from me I get an instant lockup. Its weird.
Go Figure.

I have encountered the same problem with my system. Brand new 3.4Ghz machine with ATI Radeon X700 Pro graphics card w/256mb memory and 525Mhz clock speed.
The problem is most DEFINITELY not the graphics card, it is a problem with either the sound card itself or the drivers for it.
I disabled the sound card using the device manager and AFPD now works perfectly.
However, this is not my final solution. I am going to try to download new drivers for the sound card. If this does not resolve the problem, I will contact the people with Ikarus and see if they can come up with a solution or possibly a patch.
I may try to get them to test other sound cards in my machine to see if this a problem with AFPD software or a problem with the sound cards themselves.
If anyone would like more info, please E-mail me at [email protected]

Do you have onboard sound?....take out your sound card if you do and enable onboard sound in your bios and see if that works.
Another thing to do before taking out your sound card is to check in the bios to make sure that your onboard sound is disabled while your sound card is in use.
Did you try putting your sound card in another slot?
You can also try older drivers for your sound card and that may help.
