what is the requirement as far as cutoffs for youre planes?can you have the throttle kill the ignition as well as a switch?

There has to be a way for the ignition to be killed from the outside of the plane. A standard ignition switch is fine. You just have to have it accessible from the outside (i.e. you can't have it under the hatch). And yes, you want to have the radio set up to somehow kill the engine from the radio as well. Throttle trim or a mix is what most guys usually do.

I'm not sure about a "requirement", but I've seen more than one airplane that could have been saved if the pilot would have had an Ignition Cutoff.

Easy to install, light weight, and your ignition is only armed if your receiver gets the "on" signal. In my opinion, the BEST way to go.

I didn't have an optical cut on my 50cc plane, but I put the EDC Optical cutoff on my 40%er


I then have it mixed with the throttle cutoff switch..... so when I flip the switch, the throttle barrel closes completely AND the optical cuts power

This year, my club requires our gas planes to stop running when the transmitter is turned off. It's as easy as programming the failsafe on my Ignition Cutoff channel to be "off".

Every gas plane should have an Ignition Cutoff, in my opinion.

There is no requirement within the IMAC rules for any kind of ignition kill device. There also is no AMA rules. IMAA has a rule and many clubs do, but neither IMAC nor the AMA require any kind of ignition kill device.

My mistake. Sorry[sm=red_smile.gif]. I thought there was an AMA requirement on a gas engine. Must have been a local club rule as I recall hearing about it long before I got into gas engines.

But do you actually want your engine to stop if you have a temporary glitch?
I have experienced short time glitches (on smaller models) where I subsequently regained control of the model. If the engine stops, that may cause new problems.
I think I would want the engine to go to idle in fail safe, but not actually stop.
