Vincent -
First of all thank you for the time to document this build. Of all the aircraft I've admired the Ryan ST's and PT's have been my most appreciatied since I saw my first PT-22 back in the seventies. I bought a SIG Ryan in the box around 1985 but didn't start flying RC until about 5 years ago. Scale detail is my passion and I've taken notes from beginning to end on this thread with the intention of trying to apply as much as I can when I start my build.
As a side note, I bought a 1941 PT-21 in 1985 and restored it over a period of 3-1/2 years and flew to Hemet, CA in '90 for a huge Ryan reunion of former WWII USAAC instructors and cadets. Several ST's and PT's came in from all over the country and among the many great people I'd met, I was actually priviledged to meet T Claude Ryan's son and Grandson....what a cherished memory that entire event remains.
Meanwhile I'll continue to look forward to further completion of your ST and any flight reports. Your talent and skills are remarkable.
Thanks,
Dick

Dick, thanks so much for those kind words, they mean a lot to me. All I can say about the chance to meet Ryan descendants is WOW, the stories that you must have been privilaged to!Did they bring anyphotographs that they shared with you? I'm sure thosewere memories that you will charish for a very long time.
My intention from the start of this build was to bring attention to this forgotten aircraft. I always admired the beauty of the Ryan, and many regard this plane to be one of the greats... I am fortunate to have builtit and even more fortunate that so many of you have read and followed this thread with so much interest...

Glad to hear it Handyman 220 and it will be every bit as good I'm sure!
Got all of the pinstriping on the wing done. I used 3M 1/16" tape for the job, one roll was enough to complete the top and bottom of the wing... Next I will epoxy the aileron and flaps onto the wing (you don't know how long I've waited for this)

Bravo!!!!
The pinstripe really brings it to life.
Funny how we are both doing final assembly at the same time, what's the odds on such long builds.
Later!!

Just.........WOW. Nice. Very Nice. Can't wait to see a shot with the wires and all. I will be going over this entire thread and making notes about everything prior to my build. Just a thought, but if Dick wants to post his notes he took along the thread for a starting point for the rest of us, it would be appreciated!
Just to echo whats been said, thanks again for the thread, sure was a pleasure to watch...looking forward to the Spacewalker thread (
)

Thanks guys, and thank you Anthony for the rating! This thread has been more to me than just a place to post progress of a build, it's been a pleasure and a source of laughter to come and meet virtually with you all each night...

VJ,
Private Ryan is looking better and better all the time. I can't wait to see some pictures of your plane with air under her wings. Your build thread has been a learning experience for allot of us along with a little welcome comic relief..............
I'm looking forward to your Spacewalker build too, but I'm sure your in no hurry to start it and I certainly don't blame you. Besides, it's warming up outside and it time to go flying. That, and the fact that you deserve a break from putting up with the rest of us....................LOL
Take care,
David

Thanks David, I will take a short break and enjoy our short flying season, but I bet I'll get bored at night and start the Spacewalker sooner than later...After all, I'll miss the opportunity to communicate with you all.
Here are some photos of the aileron and flaps attatched to the wing permanently. After installing Dubro 4-40 heavy duty ball links on the servo arms and control horns I measured the distance between thinking that I was have to make some custom rods, but I got lucky and will be able to use the Hangar 9 Titanium Pro Links instead.
In photo #5 you can see how the aileron and flap wires exit the center top wing. To eliminate the possibility of the wires abrading against the wood and causing possible problems, I like to use rubber grommets that solve this problem and make it look cool as well...

Attatched are some original Ryan sales material I thought you guys would find interesting......especially the 1939 factory price qoutes.
VJ - interesting you mentioned a Space Walker since I'd been eyeing one again recently. Which one are you thinking of going with?
Dick
edit: I just took the cover off the box and unfolded the plans ....I wish SIG offered online continuing education courses in building.

Dick that lierature on the Ryan was super thanks for sharing that, reading it (what I could) was interesting.Where did youfind that stuff?
I am building the 1/4 scale Space Walker as it is better suited for flying at my field. Keep in mind if you are thinking of building the 1/3 model Anthony, (WacoNut) will be building that one. We've got you covered both ways! Should be interesting so keep tuned...

I'll take one ofSTA and SCplease
great minds think alike, I did the same thing with my servo wires as I got tired of the holes in the balsa wearing and breaking out. I got to do some flying Sun and practice my cross wind, in the opposite pattern, coming in over the trees landings
I bet you have to wear a bib now just to keep the drool off your shirt
your almost ready to give birth
