Awesome video Tony, both part I and II, brakes and a glow engine help a lot on short takeoffs. Looking forward to seeing your Kadet Senior STOL

Ya, I think I was trying to show the action on the flaps but it doesn't show very well on the small screen. I like the beam in and beam out analogy though

Likely with its' alien craft capabilities, it beamed back to the mothership.

Hey all, just wondering what length of floats work on a Senior.
Thanks

Most problems I see with poor float set-up is when they are too short, and when they don't ride high enough in the water. Make sure the floats extend several inches beyond the prop, and the step is about an inch behind the CG.. Floats for a 40 size plane are too small. Much fun when you have a well set-up plane, misery if not. Good general info at this site:

For those that are still active on this thread, here is my latest build. Built to plan other than taildragger mod. Covered in Sig Koverall and painted with dope. Old school baby!

Thanks all. Yes it flys great. Surprising
y responsive for a 3 channel. It has a Saito FA-62 spinning a Xoar 13x4 prop. Tons of power. It will climb from a take off roll to a 80 degree climb out and pretty much hang off the prop. Most normal flying is at half throttle. I really like the Sig Koverall. I'm having a hard time envisioning using anything else now. It's a lot of work though. The airplane itself was a lot of work. It was my 6th airplane I've built and it was still a lot of work. I really built it for my grandson. I've been having too much fun with it though.

I'm currently framing up a Sig Astro Hog. I love these "Craftsman kits".

Ya, the Craftsman Series kits are the best, and certainly more challenging than the rest of Sig's kit line up.

I'm thinking about building another Spacewalker II.

For anyone that prefers to "build" a model rather than just gluing parts together, a Craftsman kit would be more rewarding. My Kadet Jr kit was a Craftsman Series. One of these days, when I get my two plans built Jrs done, I'll have to post a picture or two

I think a kit like the SIG Craftsman are so sought out because you really get to stretch those building muscles and you get a great sense of accomplishment when you finish.

In my early building years it was the SIG 1/6 th cub? that made me learn a few new things, and challenge me. I think that was a design SIG bought from someone that was an established builder. It almost seemed like it was intentionally harder than it needed to be. I even recall the hobby shop owner telling me it was a builders kit, instead of a newer style build.

Last time I looked at the plans though I do kind of smile and think.. what was so tough about that? It does build very light and would make an awesome electric. I think the functional piano wire structure in the cockpit is what scared me. I think the strength for the wing mount was that wire, and the cab was very frail and more realistic than a typical cub now.

edit.. had to change 1/5thto 1/6th.. as many times as I have told this story.. and I am still getting the scale wrong!

I'm with you foodstick, the kits that challenged me look so simple now, I guess it was the fear of the unknown. Once you tried it and succeeded it doesn't look so hard after that.

[Please, which of the Sig kits are considered the "Craftsman" series. Thanks.

That's hard question because they made so many good kits and not everyone's idea of what makes a "Craftsman kit" is the same. From my point of view I would say the Ryan STA, Liberty Sport, Morrisey Bravo, Citabria, Skybolt to start. You can find a complete list of all the SIG kits made over their history here:

I have been on a twin engine electric kick lately, my next SIG kit will probably be the Dornier Do-217.

Beautiful plane!! Koverall & dope always do the job right - no doubt about that. Got 2 questions - am I correct in saying this is the RC58 Senior (showing my ignorance here) and would you mind if I put your pics on the website to show just what can be accomplished in a really good build of the Sr?

I have a Citabria in bones and some covering. the Fuse has most of the covering done. What made that kit interesting is there are no servo placements on the plans, just a photo in the manual, so you are pretty much on your own where to install them.

Spaceworm, to tell you the truth, I think the kits that are now referred to as CRAFTSMAN KITS, are actually not better kits. I think they are the ones that gave you big blocks of wood you had to carve down and shape for many parts of the planes. They were in fact actually more basic and more old school in the ideas of how to build. If you got a cowl it would be halves or thirds of vacuum formed plastic, not a nice fiber glass one. Also you typically would have much more stick and multiple piece laminations instead of one big sheet ready to go.

I wasn't in the hobby at the time.. but seems like at some point during the 70's? The techniques of buildings changed a bit...

I know when I was new to the hobby I would see people in magazines and at flyins that just seemed to magically produce impossibly nice planes. Other people could spend a year on a basic stick and wing it would look crashed when new. But you knew their heart was in it !
