RE: Top Flite 1/7 P-51 Build
Actually, I studied the assembly instructions for this bird, and down near the end of "retractable landing gear", TopFlite addresses the use of struts. Using a strut and retract setup such as the Robarts I'm using results in a very rigid landing gear. TopFlite says this will give excellent ground handling, but the mounts must be very strong. I believe them. I have struts on my QF-4N, and I way overbuilt the landing gear mounts. I have had no troubles with the gear or the wing, and I've made a couple of way too hard landings.
They don't say it in the instructions, but I believe the wimpy retract mounts supplied in the kit are not meant for anything but wire struts.

I've kinda given up on mine. Trying to make a scale looking undercarriage for this kit has just drained me.
I really wish I'd just bought Brian Taylor plans instead

RE: Top Flite 1/7 P-51 Build
Was kinda bored tonight so I thought I'd post a couple of pics. I was away from the Mustang for
a while but have been picking up interest lately. I started by carving a new more scale scoop out
of foam, the one pic is of the bottom glass still drying in the mold....I ran out of resin so I'll have
to wait to do the top. I also made the rear door which I hope to be operated by a servo off the
throttle. And of course those D@#N tail gear doors. They don't open like I'd hope but at least
they shut.
Hope you like, SVX

Hey SVX,
Real nice rad and tail wheel doors
My 'stang is back together again! Only took robart over a month to ship the parts out to me[:@]
The parts arrived on Friday and there was a warbirds event at my club on Sunday. She was all back together again, and i ran the engine for the first time since the landing accident, but it was a little too windy for my taste so i didn't get to fly her.
And now I can't wait till the weather clears up!!!
Thanks
dave

Here is a manifold I made for this kit. Any input is welcome. I will attach to the flexible aluminum O.S. pipe with a short length of flexible high temp silicone tubing and clamps. I didn't use a jig so it isn't perfect. I think it will be cool to see exhaust come out of these stacks though. Its all fun!

Mustang fever, yes. I hope it withstands the heat. Hopefully the silicone section will keep it cooler by stopping the conductive heat transfer from the engine, and the fairly long flexible pipe may allow for some cooling. I guess i'll find out how restrictive the set up is, fourstrokes should be OK.

Riddle,
Flat Black (with a touch of brown) would not be correct except inside the exhaust tubes themselves. Here are a couple of pictures of the exhaust on F51D, N 314BG (painted as Petie 2nd). Note that the first tube does not have any white/grey exhaust residue and the rest have more and more deposits the further aft you go with #6 having the most residue.

Skylarkmk1, I appreciate your detailed input! My attempt is already lacking in scale. I think my spacing is off and the angles. I'm just trying to get closer than the included vacuum formed parts and functionality will be nice. It could be the whole mess melts into a big glob on first run of the engine...Ha ha ha ha ha....! I carved out some hardpoints for drop tanks which I'll post soon. Let me know what you all think.

Oh, and skylarkmk1; terrific pictures of a full scale mustang. Petie is one of my favorites and your shot of the stacks shows how wrong my pipes are. Always room for improvement in this hobby!

Good discussion going here regarding the exhaust stacks.
In the Detailing Ideas section ( starting near the middle) of my website there are several exhaust stack detailing ideas that came from builders. There might be something of use there.
Interestingly the whitish sooting doesn't seem to be present (or at least as visible) on most service Mustangs, just the currently flying planes. Maybe a product of modern fuels?

Sorry to change the subject but I was wondering if anyone here thinks the RCV 91 CD would be a good choice for this plane. It seems that everyone is using the SP series for the Mustang. However cool, the SP doesn't fit my budget as well as the CD which will still be fully consealed. Any thoughts? My alternate is a Saito 100 which I love but would protrude below the cowl. Not to mention that darn ugly muffler.

After much research and consideration, I'm going to use an inverted .91 two stroke in mine, with the Slimline Products wrap around inverted muffler. Everything will fit into the cowl that way, and there is plenty of room right behind the firewall for a 14 oz tank at the proper level. (C/L of tank level with C/L of spray bar in carb)
I have a new Magnum 91 XLS. I'll probably use it. The 91 two strokes may not sound as cool as a 4 stroke, but they turn the same size props at about the same rpm. (14x6 at around 11k)

The exaust looks great. My only concern is the heat. I finally have my bird ready for another test flight. I took it out last weekend and did some high speed taxies. Unfornately,
she came up off the ground just enough to tip stall the left wing and my gear did not hold up under the stress. I have fixed that problem, I hope, with extra formers, a more rigid mount and even lined it with composite material. Hopefully Sunday will go well. I really appreciate all the help that I have gotton from you all.
Let me know what y'all think.
