Default Goldberg Extra....again

The Extra that I recently finished had a really short life.I rolled it into the ground on its 4th trip because I screwed with the radio and ended up reversing the ailerons.Anyway, got home tonite and the brown truck had left me a brand new kit at the doorstep.Almost got the hori stab framed already. It will be the same as the black/white one w/ saito 1.50,fut 7CAP and MPI on board. These are the best all around planes Ive ever flown and I just had to have another.Maybe I can get some pics as it comes together.Anyone with any hints on it,this is the 3rd one Ive had,and the parts are never quite the size of the prints especially on the stabs.

AWWW I remember when you finished it, So sorry to hear this, A few mods I did with the 150 for the CG is mount the servos behind the wing and used the punch-out as a access panel {see pic} I also mounted some blocks so I could screw the tank floor in instead of gluing it so I can get the tank out and change fuel lines if needed much easier but no picks on that one {sorry} I also used the front punchout the same way so I just unscrew the panel and I can get right to it though I do need to remove the cowl. But I'm sure you get the idea from the servo tray in the pic. Hope the build goes quickly for you and I can get some pics of the tank installation if you need them. I love my extra.

3dwannaB,The hobby town here deals in MPI products so I got him to order it for me.Nice unit,Ill own another for the new Ultimate when its done.MPI advertises on here, usually at the top of the page w/ their HiMaxx electric stuff.Dauntae,I believe it was you telling about the graupner tanks,Im looking for one now. This new kit is the laser cut version, and so far I like the older version better. They cant laser cut the fuse sides so they routered them.Kinda messy looking.Ill probaly change my mind when I start the wing, the ribs do look good lasered. Also the ply doublers for the horn mounts are missing 2 of them.I made them,no big deal, but kinda a slip up on what is supposed to be an improvement. The black one is probaly repairable, the fuse broke in half in front of the turtle deck. The wing didnt have a mark on it except for splitting the sheeting on the top leading edge.It hit on the right nose and must have spit the wing out backwards.Im going to give it to a flying buddy who likes to tinker with rebuilds. If Im going thru the trouble of stripping and recover,Im gonna have a new plane that is straight as possible.

Well, this one is going nowhere fast. These newer kits suck.Started off missing a couple of ply doublers,no biggie, cut some out of scrap. Then the rudder bottom that is a die cut piece is way smaller than the plans show, managed to fix that. Now,starting on the wing and some of the ribs are sticking out of the trailing edge about 3/32" then the notches on the trailing edge are way off from the plans. If i align the outboard rib notch with the plan, the others are off progressing to the inner-most notch being an 1/8 or more off.Im calling Goldberg tomorrow and see if they have an old version they will trade for.I havent seen any improvements with the laser cut version. If they dont have a solution maybe tower will take it back.

I purchased my kit off the other forum so I had a older one, and it also did not match the plans too well. I'll get some pics of how I did the tank this weekend for you, I have not finished painting the new FG cowl so I don't have one installed so it will be easy to get some pics for you. With the 17oz tank I usually get a 10 min flight and land with fuel to spare.

Yeah, the black one was the older kit and it had some size discrepencies too. This one doesnt have the supports on the ribs for the leading edge install, parts that were left out(minor, but still) and the laser cutting isnt all that great on the pieces that the density varied alot in the sheet of wood. With all that,I called CG tech assist and figured ways to work with what I got.Coming out pretty good and I learned a few building tricks for later on.After seeing I could actually get it to work, its become kinda enjoyable.I ordered the 14oz Graupner yesterday for it.The 12 was lasting about as long as I need at one time(flew at 1/4-1/2 throttle most of the time)

How is the build going 8D3, I got a few pics of the tank install, All I did was mount a hordwood block to the former I was sapposed to glue it to and put a few screws in and the 17oz was a perfect fit, I've only dead sticked it once because I was really wringing it out that day and forgot to turn my timer on and it died on the final turn to approach and it actually glides much better than I expected. This is tied for my favorate plane to fly with my Hog bipe. Keep us posted on the build and if there is anything I can assist with just let me know. OH and did you angle the Landing gear forward on the last one, It put the wheels about an inch forward on mine and I have yet to nose it over, Heck I'm still on the first prop. (I probably just jinxed myself now did'nt I)

I used the stock gear location. The landing gear blockhad the slot for the wire gear,so I filled it with a strip of ply and bolted the alum gear there. It sat up pretty high and I never hit the prop.Ive got the new wing almost complete, work has kept me from getting very far.The wife and daughter are taking me out for Fathers Day today so maybe this evening I can get the wing finished.I know what you mean about it being your favorite. They do everything pretty well and still glide/slow up like a big trainer. The one I had 10+yrs ago was the same way, except the ASP 1.08 was one of those "wide open or nothing" engines.Rarely got to land it under power.

Sorry to hear of your loss. I too messed up about 6 weeks ago and flew my 11 year old CG Extra into the ground at full throttle. All that was left was the last 24 to 30 inches of the fuse. I also ordered a new kit the same day and found that the new kit had many problems. I guess Lanier has never built one of these new kits. I found the same misalignment of the ribs to the plans. Thats ok but the last rib was a full 1/8 inch short. I just extended it. The biggest problem I found was the wing saddle doesn't fit the wing at all. I added balsa sheeting and sanded to fit the wing. This probably changed the incedence of the wing to the horiz. stab as on the first flight I had to add lots of up elevator to get it to fly level. This is my third CG Extra with the first two being by the real Goldberg. After the trim flight and getting rid of some of the jitters left over from crashing the previous one, it flys just like the crashed one, which had over 500 flights on it when it went in. Your new one should be as fine as the last one.

Good luck with it.

George

Funny, when I called CG or whoever they are now,the tech guy said it was due to expansion and contraction of the paper plans/wood parts.I got my wing to the sanding stage(it will be a lot lighter after I sand out all the high spots,I hate the butt joints in the sheeting).Work will keep me from doing much until Friday,Ill start the fuse then.Im keeping my eye out for a deal on one of the older kits.

I guess the balsa also expands and contracts too. I just cannot understand how both of the outside wing ribs shrank exactly the same 1/8 inch or all of the rest expanded exactly the same amount.

Also, the wing saddle not fitting the wing has nothing to do with the plans, just manufacturing. The conversion from die cut parts to laser cut and milled parts leaves much to be desired. Scanning the plans or whatever process that was used did not work very well and as I said before, CG has obviously never actually built one of these new kits or they would correct the errors.

Anyway, if I had it to do over again, I would have tried to find an old kit also or better yet, just not crashed the previous one.

George
