Hi Scooty, No sign of that monokote then........ excuses excuses...hehe
I'm starting to buy a few things for my P51, which I still don't have in my position...thanks Tower??
I Came across this pilot today:
http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXMGN2&P=0
SPECS: Width: 3-3/8" (86mm)
Height: 2-3/4" (70mm)
Any chance you could glance over your plan's and tell me if this is going to look scale? is it to big?
Thanks for that, any other suggestions, with the kit...things you may have done differently would be appreciated.
Have a great weekend!

I was actually going to use Joe from that Slimline series for a pilot. They're pretty close to scale.
If I were to do anything different I would have glassed it. Everybody talks about how much more work glassing is. Not for me. So far I've spent twice as long trying to use monokote then actually building. If I'd glassed I'm sure I'd be done way sooner. I hate monokote, I'm sure I've wasted at least two rolls trying to get it to look right. I hate working with it. For me it took all the fun out of building the kit. I actually had a lot of fun glassing the wing center section. I'm definitely glassing my next warbird. I don't care if it comes out heavier.
I'd take sanding and painting leading to a beautiful finish anyday over monokote leading to a finish that WILL form wrinkles, eventually.

All right everyone, she's finally ready, exactly one year after I started construction! In many ways this build has been very emotional for me, I've been through losing a job and very recently a divorce as well. A lot has changed for me in this past year, I've lost a job (that I hated anyway) as well a wife (not 2 sure how I feel about her) but at least I have a shiny new P51!

I built this plane, is very nice for fly and build.

I think O.S. 46 FX or AX is fine, mine has .46 LA but is not enought engine, yes fly, but fly hard.

Maiden flight just in!!!
I was very concerned about yanking it of the runway too soon and stalling it, so I just let her roll using no elevator and just rudder to maintain heading. In about 60 feet she did a little bounce and settled back down. Another bounce, a touch of up elevator, and holy crap she's flying!! Quick, 3 clicks down and 2 clicks right aileron and I was in complete control. I did a few circuits till my knees stopped shaking, and then it was high speed passes, inverted passes, victory rolls and split S's. She performed all flawlessly. Time to check stalls. Pull back on the throttle and WOW! She got really slow before mushing forward ever so slightly. Not even a hint of dropping wingtip. Smooth throttle to full and Woah! Need just a touch of rudder to keep in track, just like a real and true plane
Ok time to land. Throttle to idle, line up, let her drop on her own, too much altitude. No prob, throttle to full, ready on the rudder this time and CRAP! Dead stick!! "KEEP her level, and just let her glide in, don't turn around," the old guys behind me coached. So I did just that and pointed her towards the weeds. I saw a wingtip fly up into the air as she hit. This is not going to be good.
The Wing is fine, airscoop needs to be glued back on. Wing mount plate in the fuse needs re-glueing. There is a 4' slpit behind the wing on the fuse where it separated from some formers. I'll post pics later.
BUT SHE FLIES, AND REALLY WELL TOO!!!

Hi Guys, I just finished mine. Nice work; yours looks great. I'm using the O.S .46 Max, Hitec Servos. I still need to find a yellow spinner and finish the cowl paint. She is RTF other than that. starcop
Let me know how this plane fly's? I've heard good things! After checking everything on my project; it is absolutely perfect, not even a 32nd off. This kit was awesome to build. I also installed the On/Off switch today.
Hey Scotty, I read your post; I would cry if I crash mine
, I'm going to fly her Sunday. Thanks for the flight info. Sorry to hear about the miss-hap, but at least you have a handle on how she goes together. Good luck and have fun. starcop

Excellent work Starcop! LOVE the alum covering. How did you do the panel lines? I experimented with a panel line pen and did the entire tail surface only to find that exhaust residue made them run!
Any flight report yet?

Hello Scooty, Thanks for the complament; I used the Parma Dual Tip Detail Pen, it seems to hold up better than a Scripto Fine Black permanant ink pen. I had to let it sit over night, but now I can use glass cleaner and it doesn't wipe off. I do have to go over areas when fuel sets on it at the field, but it's still visible so I just go over it and let it dry.
The maiden flight was out-standing!
I only had to click ailerons 2 clicks left and she was flying perfect. This is by far the best Mustang I've flown in the 7 years flying R/C, it has Zero bad habbits, I can crawl to land or fly it to the ground and chop the throttle; it's a very forgiving wing design. She also does some wonderful aerobatics. I'm pleased with Great Planes, it took me about a month to complete; the maiden flight was flawless. I posted pictures of her flying and the tail end of the landing. I'm not sure where they are now, I suppose you could look and see if you can find them. Take it easy, starcop

I just got one that is almost finished. It has a OS 70 surpass on it. What would be a good prop to try? It came with a zinger 11 x 9 on the engine.

Howdy, I have the nose cone in the way of the size of prop I'm using, I forgot it's been a while sense I've flown her or biult this bird; she hangs from the ceiling now days. I'm building another Top Flight Spitfire, so I've been waiting on landing gear funds to complete her. I'll pull the flight picks and post them, she's only been flown once and it was flawless, these Mustangs fly very well, a novice or intermeadiate expert could have a lot of fun. I wouldn't start out with this plane. You might get lucky if you've flown before, but it takes a steady stick to land her. I have so many other airplane pictures I have a tough time finding the Mustang pictures in all my folders! I hope I got the right ones! starcop
Opps! One is of my Corsair before take-off. The Mustang is just landing they mist the plane slightly, ha ha. Oh, well I do have a few of it in the air, I'll have to sort all these pictures out. Not sure on prop size; it's around 11.7 (3 blade, master air screw) in fact I'm sure that's what I used. With an OS .46 or .52 two stroke, gee I'm getting "sea-nile!

It put a couple of flights on my mustang last weekend. I tried a 12x10 apc first. The engine was knocking hard and I had to reduce power to get it to stop. Next flight used a 13 x6 Vess wood prop and the OS 70 was happier. It really groves nice and the landings are easy.

That Corsair looks sweet as well, id like to have both those birds. Could anyone tell me how the balance came out and what engine you used. I have not purchased my engine just yet and id like to base that off of how the balance plays out. Thanks for any help. I built the Mustang about 12 years ago but I cant remember any details now.

I used a Saito FA 100 four stroke, perfect engine for the Hangar 9 Corsair. If I remember correctly, I didn't have to use any additional weight in the front, it balanced out perfectly, not to mention the power ratio was the best I'd ever flown. These motors are well worth every penny, they just work and start very easy. Fun plane to build, nice quality when it's completed. starcop

Starcop,,,, did you mean the GP- Mustang Kit or did you really mean the Hangar 9? I will be starting the GP P-51 really soon id love to go with a Saito but I was thinking the .82 and was concerned about being nose heavy. If this plane comes out nose heavy to begin with then I might opt for a lighter two stroke. Those are awesome pics of the yellow tailed P-51. Anyways, thanks for any help with this engine and balance issue.
