Happy Thanksgiving all
I would like some thoughts and opinions on flaps on a Mustang. I am building an older TF P-51 Mustang (red box ) and I was thinking about not installing the flaps. What do you think? Most of the guys at my flying field that have Mustangs don't use the flaps, and told me not to install them. I am not that concerned about total scale look
Thanks

I have flaps and occasionally use them, but most of the time there not used, I use them in no wind conditions to slow it down on some when landing, but that's about it!

I have a GP .60 Mustang that works great without the flaps.
However; I have a computer radio and I added the flap function to the ailerons, this completely changed the trim and flight characteristics of the AC. Simply put it was no fun and not required for my plane.
I spoke to a full sized pilot about flaps and he noted that when they are used they have to fly the plane in a totally different manor as "EVERYTHING" changes (balance, trim, speed etc).
Bottom line, if you have a plane that requires the flaps to slow down - fine... but you'll have to learn how to land it with the changed flight characteristics.
If you can take off and land the plane without the Flaps - don't bother complicating your life!

Ok, I'll be the one to disagree.
True, you don't NEED them, and you'll only use them for landing, but I sure do like the looks of a P-51 coming in slow and dirty! (Dirty = Gear and flaps down)

Definitely recommend the flaps!
I have them on a CMP P-51, and a friend has them on a TF P-51, they slow the landing very much and make it safer by actually inducing the effect of washout.

My 1/7 TF mustang was the most stable with its flaps deployed. Made it a joy to land. Without flaps on our short grass field I would always come in too fast. Probably more pilot preference then plane but I didnt want to get too slow that close to the ground. It sure was purty when it was dirty.

watching a real warbird land is as fun as the whole flight. a real mustang looks awesome with gear and flaps hanging out clawing for pavement. why not recreate that unless scale isn't important?
