hi
on the sig kits, I built the 1/6 scale hazel sig clipped wing cub and it was the worst building kit I have ever built. never did get it to fly right. built both wings crashed it and rebuilt it about 24 times. was the worst airplane in my 30 years rc'ing. on crash number 25 trashed it.
I have a liberty sport but just dreading to start on it, hear it is a very good flyer...hope so. don't like to build two wings. why did I buy it???????

Don't you think you're being a little bit harsh?

How many complex kits have you built?

Some Sig kits are quite easily done, others, such as the Cub kits, can be real bears.

I've built two of the 1/6 Cubs, and the results have pleased me.

Bill.

I builded the 1/4 scale SIG CUB and the 1/6 also .
This is a excelent kit like most sig kits and both fly like birds.
On the SIG cub, one of the most critical part of building is to make the wing struts perfectly adjusted, in order to not twist your wings when you instal them. Plenty of the flying troubles of cubs come from twisted wings due to bad strut adjustement

Sig kits are builder's kits. If you don't like to build don't buy a Sig. I have always found their kits to be well designed and good flyers.

I agree SIG kits are some of the best.

The only ones that I remember that were a little difficult were some of the first Berkeley kits they put out after acquiring the line - especially the 1/6 scale Cub which had the 2 piece wings that were held on to the fuselage by means of "S" hooks and rubber bands inside the top of the fuselage cabin. And although the wing strut material was only hard balsa, they were functional struts. Not beefy enough to handle the wing loading except if you only flew around in gentle circles! I know regarding that one - I lost a wing on one during the first loop I tried! SIG later redesigned the Berkeley kit so it had a 1 piece wing to make wing attachment much stronger. With a 1 piece wing, the struts were no longer a critical component. But some of their kits are definitley "builder kits". If you don't like building, better look at something else.

Sig kits are some of the best left (what there is
of them), but anyway, no one who knows how to
build or wants to learn how to build should have
a problem with a Sig kit.

We miss you Hazel.

Some SIG kits are "builder" kits while at the same time some are awfully easy to put together - like the new laser-cut SE and 4*60.

"like the new laser-cut SE and 4*60"
Amen to that. The 4*60 almost fell out of the box together.

The new Four Star 40 and Hog Bipe kits are also all lazer cut. The Four Star 40 builds as easy as the 60. Don't know how easy the Hog Bipe is, as I plan on building it in a couple of weeks.

I just finished a 4* 120 and an LT-25 and was very pleased with the laser cut parts and ease of construction on these 2 models. My BIG complaint is the FOLDED plans. Sig......... please find a way to package rolled plans!!! ....lownslo

I have built quite a few Sig kits and find the quality above average
as far as design goes. They are definitely a builders kit and
take some time to build compared to other kits depending
on your selection.
I built the small Clipped wing Cub also and as long as you take
time to keep it straight it is a good flyer. Definitely alot more
chance to misalign things in this kit due to a high parts count .
I also have a Sig Liberty Sport bipe in the bones but have
not covered it yet. I understand it is a good flyer but is a builder
also.
Maybe you should have a look at one of the lazer cut kits
mentioned above like the Hog Bipe or?

Good luck..
Sam

I have a 1/3 spacewalker on the building board since more than one year. Those kind of kits doesn't like the rush. I work one or two weeks on it, then switch to a other project when the spacewalker start boring me.
it require precision and atention but the kit is above average and the instructions extremly well done (like all the sig kits)

Some of the older Sig kits can definitely be a bit of a bear to build, but done right made for nice flying planes. Most of their 70s kits such as the "K" series (Kadets prior to the LT, Kavalier, Komander, Kougar, Kobra and Komet) used techniques like printing the parts shape onto a sheet of wood for the builder to cut out. That said, they had good instructions for the time and were really no harder to build then most other kits from that era, such as Royal, Pilot and red box Top Flites.

But it doesn't get any better then their latest kits. The Four Stars, Somethin' Extra, Rascal and new 1/5th scale Cub are extremely well engineered. The folded plans remain a bit of a thorn, but they flatten out just fine if you iron them.

Best,
Kelly

One of the guys in our club had that clipped wing cub, and it was the BEST flying Cub I ever flew. It certainly flew better than any other Cub I ever flew. I've never had (or built)a Sig kit I didn't like. But then, I like to build.

I have only built one Sig kit and, while I like to build kits, it was more involve then I cared for at the time. I think I fall somewhere inbetween the easiest and more complex kits if that makes sense.

We all live in an instant gratification time period. Instant glue, ARF, RTF, Electric Starters, blah blah blah... I personally enjoyed buying a SIG 1/5th Cub plan (cause I was a broke 19 yr old) some 1/4" sticks and titebond and plan build one of my most best models. SIG kits are good kits if you have the time and patience.
In MY opinion, plans building or scratch building and flying your work of art is a most gratifying experience

I just finished building a King Kobra, and although it wasn't the easiest kit in the world to build, Sig kits are never-the-less great flying planes. You get what you put into it. I put together an ARF last year to have something quick to fly, but the sense of satisfaction was no where near what I feel with this plane ever time I look at it. Actually building a plane and watching it fly is one of the greatest feelings in the world, and can never be matched by "building" and ARF. If you want quick, build an ARF, if you want real enjoyment and a sense of accomplishment, build a plane from a kit. I attached a pic of my finished plane.

I have built numerous Sig Kits and found them to be some of the best available! I do agree with the previous posts that SIG kits are builders kits. The box is full of quality raw materials and a good set of plans. The hardware is always very good and very rarely has to be substituted. I learned to BUILD in the late 60's early 70's and I prefer a kit that I can BUILD and not ASSEMBLE!
You know the kind, one that you actually create sawdust with!!!
One that you actually have to use skills that took time to acquire though practice and determination. A finished product that YOU built because you have mastered the art of model building and know how to create a sound airframe and an aircraft that flys well. Not a step by step jig saw puzzle.

Personally, I'd rather build a Great Planes kit.

But back to the original post... Unfortunately, you'll find that the Liberty Sport is another one of Sig's infamous "Builder's Kits". Just take your time and build it right, and it will be a sweet flier.
