Default Covering question, about layering or cutting

I am in the process of building my sig 1/4 scale cub. I want the blue and white version. Should I cover it all with blue then make the white triangles or cut pieces out and then put it together?

What covering do you plan to use? The covering material will help determine the process.

That plane is begging to be covered in fabric and then painted.

Gotta agree with Charlie on this one - 1/4 scale cub ... almost a shame to cover it in plastic coating. Now to your question - IF you are using Mono/Ultra cote, I would not cover in blue then come back with white triangles - you will likely struggle with bubbles over such large areas. I'd piece together the plastic covering first, then cover...

OOPS! I should have mentioned what I was using. I am using that shiney fabric stuff I think it is 21st century fabric or something like that. I wouldnt think of using plastic with all the work I have put into it.

One of the greatest things about working with 21st Century fabric is you can apply trim colors right over base colors. The frabric "breathes" enough that you will not have any issues doing that way. Try it on a sample first to get your heat setting correct. You will really like the way this material goes on and your plane will look great when finished.

I wonder if it would make it too heavy? I have used this stuff before and it goes on good but I was just wondering if it would make it too heavy once I start laying on the white.

The added weight of the additional covering will be a few ounces at most.

Check out SolarTex fabric. Coverite fabric is 2.7 oz per sq yard - SolarTex is about 2.3 oz. SolarTex doesnot require Balsarite on the airframe to get it to stick and any overlap seams are SUBSTANTIALLY less noticeable. Balsa USA carries it.

With 21st Century Fabric, it works fine. I cannot speak to other fabrics but I have done two planes like that and the results were great.

Just a tip on fabric if you do the mask and paint. Apply your tape, next spray a one or two light coats of clear along your tape in the area to be painted. This will help seal the edge of the tape. After all that is dry then spray light coats of your paint building up the color. I know for a fact (been down that road) that sometimes the paint will follow the fabric grain a pull a little paint under the tape in spots.

Thanks for the hint, I never thought the paint would bleed.

Yes paint will bleed under tape. Follow the above and go with real light coats. Let them dry a bit and your build up next to the tape should be less.

Is that aerosol paint poly based or laquer? I am a paint and body man by trait or was and have a lot of paints. I was wondering what the rc paint was. I know that poly paint doesnt penatrate and should work and I have some of that.

If you decide to paint it PLEASE try a sample first. I have used the covering itself for trim and been very satisfied with the results. I have not tried painting it but based on the reports from others who have the results were terrible. I think you are getting advice from those who do not have experiece with this material.

I have covered several planes in fabric and painted the trim on. I have a goldeburg cub in 21 cen fabric with a black sunburst painted on the wing. I have had it for several years now.

As I recall the issue is painting a lighter trim color than the base covering material color.
