That sounds good! I just ordered mine, cant wait to build and fly her!
The price is 31 dollars and they have 5 kits left in stock. So maybe I`ll just order a few more just for fun
I used monokote on my daydream, but it looked awful after a few hours in the sun, so I just recovered the wings with ultracote. So much better!
Is it a stupid idea to add ailerons on the butterfly? I guess it flies just fine with just R/E but adding ailerons will make it easyer to fly in wind.

It has poly-dihedral, and does not need them. I personally would not mess with a good design.

Well as of tonight I have completed the covering on the fuse. I have the throttle control rod hooked up, and tail section epoxied.
As I was waiting for the tail to dry, I started installing 1/16th balsa sheet as web braces. I found some 1/32 balsa sheet that Im going to sheet the two outer ribs with. I may even put a sheet on each side of the joining ribs. It depends on how difficult the outers are. Pictures will come soon.

Quigleywins,
I was proud of my covering job, not perfect but pretty good. There are some wrinkles, but I think that the heat gun will take them out.

I just tried to find a Piece o cake, but dynaflite isnt making them anymore. Im sure there is a mom and pop hobby shop that still has some in on the shelf. I wouldnt mind having one and try my os .10la on it.

I will try to post some pictures tonight.

Picture updates

I have been working on the wing. Installed 1/16th balsa web sheets, but I didnt notice any benefit. So I added the .06 in. carbon fiber rod and sheeted the outer two rib areas. That should add enough stiffness.

ejam,
Looks good. Coming right along. Is the blue inside by the wing saddle and on the firewall fuel proofing? Fuel Proof paint? Did you start covering the wing yet?

Hopefully I can start mine in a few days. Work always gets in the way!

Have a good night.

liftdump, I used fastcolor blue matalic on the firewall, wing saddle, and inside to where the pushrod tubes are. I probably have too much fuel proofing(added wieght). I have about 3 coats of the blue paint, then two coats of dope, and then on the firewall and inside bottom, thinned epoxy. After I had used the paint, I realized that I did not know if the paint was fuel proof. That is why I used dope on top of paint.

I hope to have the wings finished by the weekend.

Make sure you have a large table and work area. Things get messy fast!

Im still unsure of what to do for a tail wheel. I may just install the wood skid for now.
And Im still unsure of what color to use for covering. I have two rolls of transparent blue monokote and one transparent yellow. My son wants the trans yellow on top of wing, and trans blue on bottom with regular bright yellow on wing tips. The only problem with that is the blue and yellow transparent will looke green I think. I know that where I overlaped the trans blue over the solid yellow, it is a dark green. I should have did it the other way around! I think that it may be better just to do the wing in transparent blue, and add solid yellow on wing tips!

Only problem with transparent blue, and other blues as well, is that it blends in with the sky too well and its easy to lose sight and orientation. Bright color, or perhaps white, graphics or bands underneath the wings would solve this pretty well.

ejam,
I was thinking about a tail wheel as well. But I read, and I don't remember where (maybe somewhere on RCU) that the butterfly is made to be hand launched and wheel landed. I have read reviews where guys installed a tail wheel and then wished they didn't. If there's any wind I guess ground handling can be a little tricky. After thinking about it -I agree with them and decided to use the skid. I have not put it on yet though. I will after covering. Not sure if I am gonna cover it or just fuel proof it.

Sounds like I fuel proofed the same areas you did. I built a Herr Star Cruiser once and did not do the wing saddle. Fuel found its way in around the wing. The blue is a good match to the covering.

Covering -I think as long as you have some contrasting colors on the bottom you should be good. Yellow on the tips sounds good.

I will post some pics after I get started. I am still working on a design as well.

Well Its Been up The maiden was today, did it climb. Before we have a return flight the engine needs to be looked at so it will run slower. I have to much throw on all controls . The red under cover was great at large heights. I did have a friend fly it and we used the budy box. Now on to the next project. Yours Paul T.

Quigleywins,
Are you running an os .15? I was trying to get mine done to maiden it today, but those darn wings are a sob to cover. I cant wait to get it all done. I will try to get some video of the maiden. There isnt many vids of the old gal on the web.

I hope that the wings will be easy to see hight up. I have one side done with blue on the bottom, and blue on top with a piece of bright yellow at tips covering the last two ribs. I may have to add 1 to 2in stripes of yellow on bottom. My plans for adding 1/32 balsa sheet on bottom tips got left out. After doing the two top, I got too lazzy and didnt feel like doing the bottoms, but now I wish I had.

If I finish her up tonight, I will plost some pictures.

I refuse to give advice on the methods of covering as I'm still a novis my self, but I was pleased with the results of my wings and as you know I hate MK. I did start with the OS20 FP but I ended up going with the OS15FP I had 3of them so the decision was not hard. Under power it just wants to climb so when it gets up there its time to idle I had the idle to high ( engine is brand new} So it will idle slower but I just wanted to see it in the air so less time was spent on the ground preperation. It will be right next time. It did climb to about 1000 FT very quickly and wanted to climb higher,up was never needed . I will report on the next flight and let you know how the alterations go. Yours Paul T

Here is what I got done saturday night.
1. installed the .06" carbon fiber rod in left wing
2. sheeted the out tip of left wing.
3. installed the tail skid, painted it, and coated with epoxy.
4. covered one wing.
5. made trip to Ace for longer hardwood dowel for rubber band holder thing. Kit ones were too short, and exoied them.
Now all that is left is to cover the other wing and tune the engine, oh and check my throws.

I am trying to find something else to build for my new os .10 sence it didnt go to the butterfly, any ideas, thow em my way! Im leaning towards a ventage gp free flite converted to rc

I hadnt thought of that. Where would I add The red? Right now, I have been thinking of what I could do to the bottom of wing. It is all transparent blue. I was joking with the wife and said I was going to put a large yellow smiley face[8D] on the bottom of both wings. And she liked the idea. But Im worried about making a mess trying to put ultracoat yellow over the monokote trans blue. My covering skills are still in its infancy stage

Oh, by the way, what is your next kit going to be?

I have already started a VK DR1 fokker If you look at the DR1 build along thread on this foram you will see my progress so far Its one that I will never fly I just like the challenge of the build I have no idea how I will cover that but that a long way off. I also have a sig Piper cub well under way. My model room has around 35 plains of all sizes in it. As to your next model I'm not going there, there is so many but I love KIts. I will do very little building this week as I need to visit the LHS to replace the stuf up on the middle wing of the DR1.
I think that red about the width of three inches around the wing would look good or orange. Yours Paul T PS you should be in bed look at the time.

They are slowly getting interested in building, and more interested in flying! I just wish I had started in the hobby earlier, at their age, its great fun and building a kit is challenging to [>:]

Well I do have two kits unfinished. And I found a plan from FlyRc mag from May 2008. Its called the "Scratch", it has a 40" wingspan and can be built as ele or .074 glow. My os.10 should be ok on it.

I will finish up the Dumas piper j4e cub, and the Guillows p51 kit402 first. That should carry me through till Christmas. Times are tight here, my wife just lost her job, so building supplies are out of the question for now. I may have to start selling some of my planes, but not the butterfly!

I will post more pictures when I finish the last wing, took some time off from covering.

Well after running around all week and doing my "house chores," I finally got started on covering. I should have the tail feathers done by tomorrow, actually based on the time right now....it is tomorrow [&:].

Try to get some pics on tomorrow night!

So Im no help at all. How about a photo fo the other. Yours Paul T

That is a great color selection and scheme...You ought to be able to see that in just about any conditions............unless you get above the clouds.
Way to go!
