I got the protos buggy last week just to have something different and heres what i think about it so far. The overall lay out is simple and good and easy to work on .The durabilty is outstanding as ive hit and fliped the thing way more than i like to,with nothing breaking .The .28 is peppy and has good midrange and top end ,still working on the lowend. It is NOT A BEGENNER buggy !!!! This .28 is verry picky and will easly get out of wack ,but once set right it will FLY. I like the midrange needle as it will make a big difference in the topend speed and you can upgrade it to a 8 port and a 9 mm carb. Out of the box the shocks are weak, it may be the springs as i havent taken a shock off yet to see. Some alum adjustable shocks would be a big improvemt . It doesent steer worth a crap under full or even half throtle, im hopeing shocks will improve this. After 8 tanks, the soft tires are ripping apart from the rims in a bad way , this thing needs a harder tire and rocks of a small size will get stuck in the back rims, makeing for some nasty flips. Ive just started running traxxas top fuel 33% in it . The cooling head is huge and keeps it almost to cool so far 150 to 190. The overall speed is good it will get up and move even with the lowend not yet set right. This thing will eat up some fuel thoue, faster than i think it should. So far so good, ill update this post when i change some things around.

Very Good assement - I have one and think it is awesome. VERY VERY TOUGH!!!! You guys can put 2 & 2 together and figure out where some of the platic may come from.... let me say the arms and shock towers are Savage like. This is one tough buggy. IMO the shocks are the week point but Robitronics is coming out with aluminum upgrades for it and shocks will be in the offering. The motor screams! The stock wheels and tires are ok for bashing or ripping up and down the street but the Axil .28 ballons them lol. I need to play with the diff fluilds to get the balance just right.
Hey Badtoad do you notice how easy this buggy adjusts midair? I have had Jammin buggys, Prospecs and a few others and with the protos just through it on the track and it rips!

Hi all , just thought id update this ......Well i tryed my hand at racing this thing and the first thing i found out was tires tires tires! The owner of the track let me use his crimefighters and WOW what a difference this was. It went from not turning, to way too much. With the alum adjustable shocks, handling was far beond what it was stock. The next thing i did was to make the brakes adjustable ,2 Ball studs and a 10 or 12mm turnbuckle and it was good to go.The motor is good but it seemed to be a little slow off the line,so i added some ofna alum shooes with 1.1 springs with a 13 tooth cb ( for short tracks) and it was again ,a different animal .It shoots off the line like it should! I took out the greese in the diffs and tryed a 3,5,3 setup and might change it to 5,5,3 , but it was still good off the corners,no really bad unloading of the tires. I changed the pipe to a cvec duel stinger with the spring thingy in it and so far its proved to be worth the cost, great bottom end and mid range power. The servo's are not up to par for the track or anything eles for that matter. They didnt have enuf power to hold a turn steady or work the breaks with the force it needs to stop or even slow down,so i got a set of the MG995 servos from hong kong . They will stop and turn when you want to ,well worth the cash .With this setup , it was tested by a pro driver ( cause i suck as of now) and he blasted the feld over the 8's , 777's ect .He sed this thing rocks and wrote down all the mods i did just incase he gets one.So i know it can perform very good , just not stock !!!! I hope this helps someone out there with their Portos buggy. Bye the way i got a second with it my first time out !!!

Hey Guys,
1st off, Great reviews of the buggy..Was unsure if I should buy one, now I know I will for Christmas.. TY-TY..
2nd most, You stated the shocks were not up to job, what brand did you replace them with?? Where did you buy them from and did they do their job??? Same for the Servo's, since I'm new to 1/8th scale, (own an 1/18th) these MPN's are all new to me.. Also, what radio setup are you guys using??
Again, Thank You for the reviews and I'll let you know when I get mine..

The shocks are GMP alloy adjustable from hong kong at around 40$ . The same for the servos , cause im a cheepskate and i used the extra cash for the crimefighters tires. The shocks work great , youll love em. Now with the mg995 servos i had to use my HPI savage controller cause the steering servo has to be reversed on the controller , the stock one cant do that. You can get a hpi savage controller on ebay really cheep thoue so its not that big of a deal.

I have the same question. I'm not new to nitro, but I'm new to buggies, would this be a better buy for me or would the OFNA buggy be a better one. I'm not looking to race...just yet, but I will bash this thing and I want it to be able to hold up.
Thanks a lot guys

I have had my protos for abour 3 months, ive broke both front control arms and my axial motor lost the inside bearing. I have also chewed up the front axle spindel, the one that goes throught the wheel. does anyone have a good outlet for parts other than towerhobbies, they list it but its been on backorder for a month now

I just got my Protos yesterday and I've only looked it over real good, as i want to get a failsafe and temp gun first before running it. First impressions: this thing is awesome! Looks way more expensive than the 273.00 i paid at Tower. I didnt really care for the hot pink paint job at first but in person its nice and bright with the blue and silver, so im keepin it! I tugged on the pull start, dang some major compression there
. This is my first 1/8 scale buggy, i usually run 1/10 or 1/18. I also have a Robitronic Scalpel and loved the quality, so i figured the Protos would be the same and i was right. Even though it has plastic shock towers, they are major thick! If you break those, thats probably the least of your worries at that point. After hurting my finger a few times, I finally bent the body pins into an L shape so they will come off easier. I love the red anodizing, I get tired of purple and blue. Also two thumbs up to the "c" size glow igniter, very handy if you dont have a rechargable one. i was impressed also with the metal arm mounts and hubs. I'll post more impressions during the break-in process.

I had an ofna lx ultra comp and it was the biggest pos Ive ever owned. Everything kept breaking under track use. I went through countless sets of rear diffs as well. However the motor was SUPER easy to tune. I ended up ordering this Protos last thursday and hopefully will get it up to the track this week or next. Good to hear most people like it and it needs just the typical suspension and radio/servo upgrades.

I'm glad to hear another person got this buggy, I think more should get it, its really tough. I have run about 8 tanks in mine and havent noticed weak servos, I think I read someplace that Robitronic upgraded them? No problems with the shocks, they seem to do pretty good. I did go and buy a Tower rechargable glow igniter, really nice, I recommend that one. Also got the 1600mah Duratrax receiver pack, fits better than the AA holder, I'll use servo extension cable to connect power and to recharge while its still in the buggy. I got the new Duratrax Onyx 200 charger that has the outlet to charge nitro receiver packs.
I needed a new charger for my electric cars, so this one will be useful for both nitros and electrics. I would like to get the Baja truck body that they have on the new stadium truck, but can't find it available separately, any ideas? What would be a good set of basher tires with big hard treads? I kinda liked the old style but my buggy came with the mini-pin style, I'm sure theyll wear pretty fast. On my last run, the engine quit and I thought it was outta fuel, but just had a stick stuck in the spur gear..but no damages and this thing has really impressed me so far, its my first 1/8 scale.

its a really nice buggy. IMO its under-estimated. You cant beat the price and quality. You cant even compare it to an OFNA because the robi plastics are a lot better. I think all the new protos have been updated. The shocks are now aluminum (big bore) and the fronts are universals, not dogbones. Out of the box, this thing is awesome. I would recommend it.

You can get all the parts at TowerHobbies online. I recommend getting the small Ofna failsafe with ANY nitro car, if the radio loses signal with the car, it applies the brakes once its set up. I just got upgrade radio for mine, the new Spektrum, it has built-in failsafe on it. My Axial engine runs great and is easy to tune, runs really cool too. break out your engine manual and restart your tuning routine from the base settings they recommend, it works. New metal pipe is coming to mine soon, i dont like the plastic pipe either. otherwise, hasnt broken yet, pretty tough.

Robitronic USA just released a new mini failsafe. Check it out:

Like ksavage says, it prevents your car from taking off due to lost of signal or battery. Its a must have for all nitro cars.
Robitronic parts can be found on towerhobbies, vgracing.com, speedtechrc.com, and more web stores to come.

Hey Guys,
I too have just bought a Protos. For an RTR I was amazed at the out of the box performance, once it was run in and retuned anyway. I bought it for bashing not racing so the durablity of the Robitronic Protos impressed me enough to buy one. Some questions though.
Q1. Where to get another bodyshell - a clear one so I can paint it myself, original or another style that I can modify without too much swearing.........
Q2. Steering servo. Nothing but probs here, was fitted with wrong servo arm out of the box, replaced with stock servo saver, but set screw keeps coming out. What arm is everyone using?
Q3. The stock steering servo doesn't seem to want to turn the little beastie, it either turns in like a wild thing or won't turn at all. I'm replacing it. But what with?
Any help here would be muchly appreciated guys. What to do, where to get it etc, all of this would please me no end.
Cheers

Robitronics sells a clear body part #R28004C
As for a replacement servo, I would recomend a high-torque metal geared servo. If you replace your stock servo with one of these, then I would just get a metal servo horn. The car has a servo saver system built into the steering rack. The car also comes with the servo saver on the servo because the stock servo has plastic gears.

Thanks for that, unfortunately the shipping costs from the US to Australia are insanely high, hopefuly I'll find a local distributor with a generous enough streak to sell it to me at reasonable cost.
ON another note, a serious rollover and u;timate collision with a metal post has shattered both othe the A-arm mounts and has pulled one of the front shocks apart. So this is going to be a reasonably expesive excercise, especially since I'll be upgrading to the CNC parts over cast alloy, and getting the CNC front shock tower as well. Also be geting a set of the hop-up alloy shocks with the red anodised tops. Woo-hoo.
Cheers all

Sorry for digging up an old thread, but info on this old model (original Protos) is getting thin!!
Thanks in advance for any help!
I'm a newbie at RC nitro buggies and I after some struggling, I got my Protos running a couple times.
I think its mostly ok after a lot of adjustments, but I am having trouble with braking power.
Is there a mod or fix for this? I read earlier in this thread that I may need a stronger braking servo...
Should I go for this? Can anyone link me to a suitable replacement? Or is there another fix or mod to improve braking?
Thanks again!
