OK guys, I'm about to come out of the stone age and get an electric. I know absolutely nothing about them, except that I want one! I need suggestions of what plane, motor, esc, batteries, etc...... I'm thinking about either an E-Slege, E-Yak, or a Shockflyer. I know that this is a lot to ask, but being the good Bros that you are, I know that I can count on you guys to help me out!
Any suggestions?

Man, get an E Sledge (or Yak) a Himax 2015 4100, GWS EPS C Gearbox with D gears, a spare GWS D pinion, Castle Creations Phoenix 25, an Electron 6 or Berg 5 RX, some HS-55 or GWS Pico BB servos, and some 3S 1200 or so lipos. That is a proven combo, you won't have to break trail.
The ShockFlyers are OK if it's calm or indoors, but they won't take a licking like the E Sledge, and you really need some small motor/battery to keep 'em light. The larger/tougher E Sledge is more versatile, IMHO.
Just my $.02

One place we always seem to forget is AV8Hobbies. Troy is a Bro!! http://www.av8hobbies.com/
Try him first, if he don't have it, I'll hit you with the MOAL (Motherload of all Links!)

Hey guys! I talked to JWilliams yesterday (great guy!) and he is going to hook me up with some plans and depron for an E-Sledge and an E-Yak. He also made some other suggestions that will be very helpful. I've tried to reach AV8hobbies with no luck, so I'm also looking elsewhere. I'm trying to get my shopping list in order, so I have a couple of more questions.
Using a Razor 350 (one of his suggestions), will I still need the C gearbox with the D gears? How about the spur gear? Will that need to be for a C drive or D drive? Also, what do you think about using a Thunder Power 3 cell 1300 mah Lipo (TP 1300-3S)?
Thanks for your help!

Don't get confused..The gearbox is an EPS350C, and you want a D (6.6:1) gear ratio. The spur gear will come with the gear box. You will need to buy a 10 tooth D pinion (part # EPS-9D). Bishop Power Products has the Razors on now for $81.95, this is quite a bit cheaper than they have been for some time. He can fix you up with the gearbox and pinion gear also. As long as you are ordering, get the "CNC Adapter Plate" (it's on the gearbox page) it makes everything more solid and you can adjust the gear mesh. EDIT: Looks like the gearboxes he has already have the CNC plane.. you won't need to buy an extra.
I'm not familiar with the Thunder Power 1350's. Make sure to try to get the "second generation" or 10C discharge packs, they are a lot better than the old school packs. I can pull 20% more amps from a 3S 850 Mah Irate than I can a 3S 1200 Mah E-Tec. The new cells are really great.

An easy way to do the gearbox setup is to buy the "combo"kit. I got mine from allerc and the adapter plate, gears, pinion, all the good stuff come as a package. I finally got this electric stuff going and man, where has it been all my life???

Razorback, there are two Jeff Williams, the RCU names are JWilliams which is me, and the other Jeff Williams is RCU Chuck Auger. I am the one that designed the Sledge, then the electric foamies (yak, sledge, extra, cap). Now that is settled.
Get the Razor 350!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
THe Himax is a good second choice.
I want to do an outrunner AXI probably but have not gotten that far.

Oh I knew who he was talking about...I also knew that he had typed E-SLEDGE so it would just be a matter of time and Jeff Williams (formerly known as Sledge designer) would be stoping by... (ITS A CHIP THING) SLEDGE SLEDGE SLEDGE SLEDGE...
I still fly my foamy(E_SLEDGE) almost every evening in my back yard... It is to cool....
BOTH JEFFS ARE GREAT BRO's...

Both Jeffs cringe when we think they are talking about us and it is the other, or the other and you think "Is it me they mean" "Do they know there are two Jeff Williams" But hey being confused with Chuck Auger/Jeff Williams is not bad, he is a good bro. The chip thing, hMMMMMMMMM I will have to wait and see who all picks up on this one. Bizarro got it going but not many have jumped on it. That is OK, it can be all yours Bill.

Thanks everybody for the help! I especially want to thank JWilliams for his help and insight, and Troy @ Bishop Power Products for all of his help. Troy replied to my e-mail the very next day (big plus for me!), assembled my motor and gear box for me (since this is my first electric), and is sending me extra spurs and pinions for free! You just can't beat service like that!

Which motor did you get? Their web site says they are out of the Himax.

I got the Razor 350. It was a little more, but JWilliams convinced me that it was worth the extra money. I wish that it would get here in time for me to have it ready for Memphis, but at the rate that I work I'll be lucky to get it ready for SMALL.

I've had both and there's not that much difference in them. That said, when I started accumulating, I did sell off the Himax since it was heavier, but I had a jillion flights on it before I sold it. If you've got the $$ and can find the dang things, the Razors are great little motors (especially since they are about 10% cheaper now [8D] ), but for getting started in brushless I sure enjoyed the heck out of my Himax. As a side note, all my Razors are residing in a box while the Hacker gets the stick time, but I'm gonna break one out for Memphis...the Hacker is a pack hog, but it sure is sweet power!
