Default NEW Work bench!!

If cleared off a 14' section of wall space, and I'm building a work bench. I had a 6' bench next to the wall and couldn't work on a plane with the wing on. I would like to ask for some input on what type/shape of bench to build. I'm thinking about a two piece bench that can be straight and flat to that wall, but with a break in it so a can make it into a L shape work area if needed. So what would you guys build?

I would love to have a 4X8 foot one on wheels so I could move it where I wanted . Max H.

Not sure how many people read The Family Handyman magazine, But anyways a couple of months ago they had an article about building a work bench. They used cabinets with a solid core door on top. Using casters to roll the bench around.

Using all new cabinets, castors, door etc. etc. Said they had $400.00 invested in it. Sounds like a lot and it really is. But a really nice strurdy workbench with covered cabinets on castors sounds like a great deal. Finding used cabinets and such would bring the price down considerably. I like this bench idea so much i will probably build one this winter.
Not sure if they have the article online, If you search for it you might find it. even if you don't build it you may be able to use some of their ideas to build your own.
Kind of funny as now it's the only magazine subsription i have, not including the AMA magazine.

My shop is 31x35, and I need to be able to pull a car or truck in sometimes. The middle of the shop has a large steal welding/fab table. Im thinking a 30"x13' table that will turn into a L shaped work area. 5'x8', 5 on the wall and 8 sticking out for the L to fit my 2 giant scale planes. (83" Cap and 85" P-47)

I will post some pic tomorrow. Scoot

I have the same issue with bringing in cars sometimes but with 120 size planes. I have a 5' L x 30" H x 2' W cabinet I put casters and 110V. outlets on it with a hollow core door on top. I can work all around the plane. I roll it out of the way when working on cars. Works great for me.

That's a good idea. I was thinking a split bench so the stationary part would be more for the non-movable stuff like part bins, ultracoat balsa and such. The movable "L" part would be for my planes to sit. You gave me a good idea with the power part. Going to put outlets on the movable part and a small shelf for my power tools / irons / heat gun.

OK......it took me a few weeks to get on the work bench, but I got some work done in the last week. Hoping to finish it tomorrow and start hanging some stuff on the wall. Still have to make the legs on the extension. It ended up 12' long attached to the wall, with a 50" extension that will move from the wall around to the side. The extension is 80" from the wall.

Hello

What is this bench going to be used for . I have found that a bench that you can work from all sides is better for building on and also away from any walls specially when you just cant get to the part you are trying to fix from one side or the other .
I use an old teachers hard wood desk that I got from an old school sale years ago the top work surface is 36"X60" and that is a good size for me to work on and I can actually move all the way around the table to get the angle I need .

The garage is 31' deep, 35' wide and the bench is only 30" from the wall. I think it will fit.

Your bench looks great so far! Nice framework too.

Here are a few pics of my main assembly bench that I call "Benchzilla" It's just over 4x8 and serves double duty as a bench for my tablesaw. It has it's own dust collection system, electrical system with 8 concealed plugs, and built in tool drawers and balsa storage.

I like your idea of an L shape bench as that seems to be a good use of your space available. It's handy to be able to work on a fully assembled plane.

My kingdom for a space like that!!! I had a 1000 sq. ft. shop in calif. and when I moved here my shop turned into a 14X14 ft. room. Like working in a closet here. That looks like a great space and going to be a super bench.

Well I got some more done to it tonight. I thought 8' of peg board with a shelf would be enough............WRONG!!

I will be adding more peg board and adding on to the shelf tonight after work..
