Hi guys,

I was intending to attach the ailerons to the wing this weekend, the hinges i have are the ones with a pin in the middle, unfortunately they displace the aileron about 1/8 back. The solution is to use CA hinges, but as it always happens the two hobby shops i have available do not have them.

Is there any way i can substitute the CA hinges with something more readily available?
Anyone here use some other material instead of the CA hinges?

I'm not aware of what material could be substituted for ca hinges. One thing most users of the pinned hinges do to close the gap is this. With your exacto knife, cut a small recessed area out of your leading edge of the control surface and trailing edge of the wing/rudder/horiz stab where each hinge will be. This allows the hinge to recess into the surface and the gap will be closed.

There is a purpose in that gap - though it should only be of pin diameter. Too close and the hinges bind. Bind frequently and the hinges weaken. Weak hinges split. You also have to flex the control surface to full deflection when dripping on the CA. Otherwise, it may crack the hinge when you first force it to where it needs to be and it binds against the wing because it has "bottomed out", especially a 3-D model, which has lots of control surface, which stresses the already weakened hinge. That's a cascade to disaster.

A lot if the pad press they got early on was from "self-inflicted wounds". Some gap is very often better than no gap.

Check out the "stickies" by MinnFlyer on how to install CA hinges. They work well when done properly. I have them on giant scale models of 15 pounds and over. Below is the link.

They won't displace the surface if you inlet the hinge into both surfaces.

It's a skill that is easy to pick up. Xacto sells a scooper blade that was popular because it made the inletting dead simple and quick. But simply cutting a V works well too. Of course, you wind up needing to take extra care gluing. A skill that is easy to pick up. However, it's best to pick it up before your first inletting job. (Actually..... knowing the risk ahead of time is often enough to trigger solutions.)

Putting vaseline on the hinge pin area prevents the glue from sticking.

I will have to use the pin hinges with a small recess, CA hinges are nowhere to be found so i´ll have to improvise a little.

I really hate it when hobby shops tell you something on the phone only to find out when you get there that they have no idea what a stupid CA hinge is.

Ooooo. I lose two points for reading incomprehension.

Irecess the to the pins. Digging out the slot with a hacksaw blade ground to a round edge on one end and a "V" cutter on the other, then the Nibbler to clear the slot. You can also swap a singlelength of 1/16" music wire along the whole hinge line instead of using the individual pins. Easier to pull out and seals the slot.

I never did one on Pinned hinges (Hmm, maybe in the near future?) But here is a more "in depth" one I did on CA hinges:
