Default Pinning A Hinge ?

I am putting together a 66" VF Edge 540 and am using Dubro Nylon pin hinges on the control surfaces. I have the hinges epoxied in using 30 minute stuff (it's all I have). I have heard/read that a round toothpick can be put thru the wing and hinge to basically keep the hinge from being pulled out.

My question is, does the toothpick get epoxied in as well or is it wicked with thin CA? Is there anything else I should do/know to ensure that this planes stays together for at least a couple of flights?

Thanks,

I would do 2 toothpick-dowels per hinge. If you are good, and using the Du-Bro hinges, you can get them in the holes pre-drilled in the hinges.

Let me suggest that you install a couple of spare hinges in some scrap balsa with the slow-drying epoxy you have used. Give it a full day to really cure. Now try to pull them out. With any kind of fit at all, you will tear out wood. I have never pinned a hinge in 27 years, 112 RC planes, and never had one pull out. I use the Hayes (used to be Kraft-Hayes) living hinges. I just hate to see guys put the eye-sore toothpicks on their finished planes....looks like pimples on a cute gal

Well, I think I have decided against pinning the hinges. I installed them on the rudder and elevator halves last night and tonight I pulled on them hard enough that I thought I was going to break the wood so I am assuming that they are pretty well glued in. And I'm with Azcat, the idea of putting a hole in the covering and then trying to cover it back up is not going to look real good - like a pimple on a cute girl.

Thanks for the advice,

Hi

I use dressmakers pins - they look much better than toothpicks

I use t-pins, cut them off, grind with a small dremel and use a tiny pice of covering to cover the little itty-bitty dot of steel. Unless you hold the surface 6" away from your face you don't see it, there is no pimple, and it has yet to fail..

Lemme see if I got this straight...

I get a girl with pimples, and I hold her 6 inches from my face, then I poke her with a dressmakers pin, and cover her with iron-on covering, and her pimples go away?

After your hinges epoxied are into place and dry carry out the following:

1) Drill a 1.5 mm hole through the underwing wing edge and into the hinge, this can be one or two holes per side as required.

2) Add a spot of CA to the tip of a cocktail stick and push firmly into the drilled hole and through the hinge.

3) Cut off the stick as shown.

4) Now you can either brush a spot of fuel proofer over the exposed stick end or make some covering pieces from a paper hole punch and iron into place![8D]

Robart hinges are much more difficult to pin.
