I aminterested in your thoughts and ideas on a smoke system for a OS 46 ex and a Satio 72 in a Extra 300. I will be adding it to a plane already being flown. What would your choice of products be to accomplish this task? Thanks in advance for all of your replys. BAD ANDY

From: Bay Area, CA,
Good question Andy.
I too am looking to add a smoke system to a plane of mine.
I will be using an O.S. 91fx. I have the smoke valve and tube set up, I did see a smoke pump for sale as well... I don't know all what I will need but would LOVE to find out.
Anyone?... anyone?...

Guys,
I put a system from Dubro into my Hog Bipe with a Saito .91 Instructions are at This location .
First trials gave short smoke (we used most on the ground.) I have to adjust the output to spit out less oil into the muffler and make the smoke oil last longer.
Just make sure you are running the engine at least 3/4 throttle before turing on the smoke valve.
Total cost was <$40Cdn including tank, valve etc.
Next trial is next weekend.

I am using the old version of this pump:

In my GP Super Skybolt. I am using it with Ultrasmoke from Air Capital Hobbies. Here is a pic, or you can download videos at: http://204.96.183.34
(Note* Right click on files, choose "Save Target As")

Just wondering,
Do the glow engines run hot enough to use normal smoke fluid? I have been told that they don't. If they don't, what would be a good smoke fluid for glow engines?

When you say "glow engines" are you referring to 2-stroke engines? The 4-stroke glow engines create more than enough heat for smoke by pre-heating the oil by wrapping around the muffler header prior to going into the muffler.
2-strokes don't generate as much heat and I've seen mixed success with some buddies.
4-strokes generate lots of heat and I have the burn marks to prove it :stupid:

Cmon there Mike,
I didn't say they didn't generate enough heat, I said that they didn't generate as much heat.
My buddies have done some preheating with 2 strokes in some unique ways, including engine header, muffler, etc but like I said, mixed results. I've just seen more consistent smoke attempts out of the 4-strokers.
BadAndy I honestly think the .72 will do much better for the smoke than the .46.
(you just have to adapt to the smell of smoke oil now; not quite that wonderful "burnt nitro" smell
)
Bob
ps I just ordered the new Sullivan Sky Writer system to replace the manual dubro system in my hog bipe. I keep losing pressure after a short while so an electronic one that can mix with the throttle seemed to be the next thing to try.
Let us know how your smoke goes.

Krayzc,
I've heard that kerosene is corrosive and that it will eat away at rubber seals, etc. I have also heard that you have to have a special installation to use kerosene. Have you had any problems with this?

the smell afterwards is the only problem i encoutned.
other flyers comments below:
I've used diesel fuel, mixed with Marvel Mystery oil with good success.
About one gal of fuel with 4 or 5 oz of MMO. Not too hard to clean up,
either.
almag, with a little marvel mistry oil mixed in.
1 agree . After trying every available product and a number of
concoctions, ALMAG produces the most volume with the longest hang-time.
Significant increase in hang-time can be had when gasoline is added. The
longer the mixture is allowed to sit and "ferment" the better the
smoldering process, and the longer the hang-time. Nothing like burying
an aerobat...especially when the sound goes away (denser - significantly
absorbs the exhaust note)!
ALMAG. And if it needs a little thinning, use mineral spirits.
Diesel
fuel will give the smoke a gray color.
that looks like a rich engine.... Try some straight liquid paraffin if you
want some real smoke!!!
And leaves no mess like that stuff does!!
Where do u find liquid paraffin???
at a restaurant supply store, I had Astrohog get it for me, the stuff is
like $7 per gallon, and leaves no residue on the plane, and has awesome
white puffy smoke!

ALMAG oil is a light machine oil (non petroleum), used for aluminum and
magnesium. One of it's main properties is parafin. It does not require
thinning to work properly.
If I try and make a ALMAG/gasoline batch and let it sit, but I always
run out. In this case I use it as-is with no problems.
Check your yellow pages for bulk oil suppliers, especially Texaco-based
(although not required).

Could you get by putting a smoke system on a plane such as a Four Star 60? Are would it hurt its performance due to weight? If so what would be a good set-up to get for a first timer?

'liquid paraffin' is def. lamp oil!
shovel head heat is what the system needs some rc'ers have said the smaller glow jobs don't get hot enough. if you are wanting to try it use a preheater and in some previous post they show a link for a smoke system for the smaller glow; however, i have heard it really just looks like a rich engine running vise a smoke system....

Liquid parrafin AKA Lamp oil. I got some at Walmart for $2.67 half gallon. It's really cheap and works great. I recently tried it out on my new Yellow Extra 300 with a slimline smoke pump. When I turned that bad boy on, I couldn't see the bottom of the plane there was so much smoke!!!!. No smell and no mess!
There is 2 different kinds of oil. One is labeled "Pure" the other isn't. Get the one that ISN'T labeled pure.
