I read a tip from Tony of Tony's Screws. He takes the diff housing and surfaces it before assembly. He takes various pieces of sand paper (very fine to super fine?) and surfaces the face of the diff housing using the standard figure 8 method. This should be the cure to your leaky diffs.

I think symbology is talking about the diff leaking from the paper seal and not the O-Rings. I have carolinas' as well but my diffs always leak a bit at the paper seal. I'll have to try the sandpaper thing.

Yes i see what you mean, snviper, by the way nice new video on your page and congratulations on your good performance once more.
As for the sanding, yes i will give it a try, but i think the leaking goes 90% on the o rings, hope the carolinas will solve that for me.

Cortesy of Tony of Tony's Screws and Chand Bradely
The biggest tip would be prepping the diff cups and double-gasketing them. Using like 3 different grit sandpapers (I use emery cloth) you want to sand the cups until they’re smooth as glass. I use 320 grit, then 800 grit and finally 1500 grit. Place the paper on a perfectly smooth table and hold the cup on the paper. Swirl it around in a figure 8 pattern. The idea is to get the cup perfectly smooth and flat. When you go up to 800 grit, you’ll quickly see the plastic get very shiny smooth. If you didn’t go long enough on the 320 grit, you’ll clearly see it. I then do a quick run with the 1500 grit and they’re dead straight. What this does is ensures the cup won’t leak against the ring gear or spur gear. Most people blame the leaky Mugen diffs on the o-rings, but 95% are at the cup (just take two cups and face them together and see the light in between them as you rotate them face to face). Remember, the cups are not machined, they're molded. Then double up the gaskets (Part # C0257). I use my screws 2mm longer than the manual and tighten up. They’ll NEVER leak from the cup (Tip comes from Chad Bradley).
I pulled this off of some other forum. I do not remember which one.
I figured if I got people to sand on their diff cups I might as well give them the whole scoop.

its funny i've been told be quite a few people that they didn't/wouldn't buy a mugen because its dated, then i look at the race results from the worlds, 2 and 3?

dated as compared to what? its the best buggy out there from a consistency perspective its also the most durable - ive driven a lot of buggys nothing handles like the mugen nothing has the parts precision.

i think its more of a case of its not broken so theres been no need to continually release new versions. I haven't found a reason to doubt my prospec yet.

im a bit of a superstious guy - once i have a buggy dialed in its too much work to get a new one and do the same. id rather focus on driving.

the mbx5 is just a dialed buggy period. every one i see on the track just looks smooth and easy to drive i still love my ttrs3 but may be swaping the ttr for the new mbx5r the new changes are kinda minor but will help with steering and bumps to a buggy that already goes over bumps great and steers good also. mugen is by far the top name in quality and consistancy its track record speaks for its self no need for alot of hype or bragging like alot of other companies dwell on.

i know the feeling with swapping buggies, i started with a hyper 7 and had that setup like you wouldn't believe, the first time i drove my mugen it felt awful (stock just didn't work for me) but after a couple of weeks i never looked at the hyper 7 again. i wonder what it would be like now after close to two years?

i've seen the new x5-R in person. And really there isnt much differences at all, and your older prosec or regular versions could be easily upgraded to an R-version over time, and with spare parts left over for more tuning options.
Really the only differences are
Shock Tower (the look very narrow like the Losi tower)
Shocks (very long)
Front Upper arm (more clearance for the ackerman)
Front Lower arm
Rear Lower arm and
Servo Saver.
edit
also longer rear wing mount.

Yea Dicko I have 2 that are exactly a like. I like one a little better. I turn faster laps with the other. The funny thing is the one I like to drive is looser fit. Camber and toe will vary maybe half a degree from the slop in front and rear end. I practice a lot with the slower one. I race the other. I saw the new shock's at a race Sunday in Dothan, Ala. They are the same ones off the New truck. They still have the plastic bushing"s and spacer's. I would have like to have seen some bronze bushing's in the new one's.

from my understanding they have a new chassis too, the engine is supposed to be shifted slightly forward to get a better COG. from what i hear there will be an upgrade kit (like the truggy conversion kit) to upgrade the older prospecs to the R verion. i hope the release date doesn't end up like the losi & keep getting put back.

just spoke to the aussie importer, he expects the new mugen in on Monday, so the shops will have them by the end of the week. no upgrade kit will be made available that he knows of. looks like a new buggy is on the cards for me. now i have to decide if i want to go new mugen or losi..... i'll have to look into this.
