Default C6 P/S Replaced, and started break in.

Ok guys, if you remember a little while ago I got a brand new RBC6 for a backup engine and the P/S wore out in less than two tanks on the break in stand, well, my LHS handled the issue and got me a new P/S from RB (very thankful). Anyways, I've installed it and re-sealed the engine, will be ready to fire it up after work tomorrow. Should I use my break in stand or, break it in installed in the buggy??? I'm now skepticle on the break in stand even though I've broken in alot of engines on it, im kinda paranoid if you know what I mean even though it probably had nothing to do with the stand its just the first engine that I've had that happen to since I was a beginner. Probably a noob question but I dont want to throw a 180.00 P/S in the garbage!!!! WISH ME LUCK!!!!!!!!

Ive never used a stand, just heat the case/head and toss it on the track to do break in. Hope this one goes better for you this time.

Cheech,

Just do the RB method I think that works great. Your far from a novice you helped me get mine running right. Just keep the temps up and keep her sloppy wet after you idle out the first tank. You know the drill she not going to really give it to you until after a gallon. Good Luck keep us posted.

Ok, I finally got the chance to start the break in process, I got two 2 minute and one 3 minute cycles through it, I guess it's going good, after it cooled, I checked to see if the pinch was still good and I had a hard time turning it over with my finger with the glow plug in. Oddly though, with the plug out there is only little resistance when I turn it over, so I grabbed my modded one that runs great, and its pretty much the same way (the modded one has close to 2 gallons on it) I never really payed attention to that so I guess its nature of the beast??? Because with the glow plug in they are pretty tough to turn over.

I did not use my break in stand this time, I set my throttle on my radio to only open to about 25% and drove it up and down the driveway with the temps at no less than 200 and no more than 225ish. So if this is not normal I have no idea what is going on here. I'm guessing that this is how it is for these particular mills, the only thing is my S7 and WS7 had more pinch with the plugs out, or maybe I'm loosing my touch or overlooking something here???? Does anyone else notice this with the C6??? If anyone that has experience with theese engines, please give me some input, I'm not too familiar with the C6 line of engines, I know that other RB'S have a ton of pinch after break in as I've used nothing but RB's since 2000. THANKS!!!!!!

Yeah, plug out you should turn it over easier than if the plugs left in as you mentioned. I think in car is the best way, rather on the track or up and down the street. Glad to hear it going good this time. Props for setting the radio throttle to 25%.

Cheech my RB is pretty easy to turn over with the plug out too, so I would not worry about that to much. Most important is when the plug is in that its tough to turn over thats the sign of good compression i.e. no air escaping around the piston. Sounds like its going pretty well for you continue with what your doing you'll be fine.

we just did a RB C6..the motor definitely did not carry much pinch or hold that great of compression....... I do use a stand, but I have done plenty of other C6 engine with no issues..so I am thinking there is some QC issues happening with fitment of the RB pistons....

well i don't know about the rb c6 but i have a go 3 port race and after 3 tanks of break in i can't even get it to tdc with my finger with the plug out. my guess would be that this is the nature of the rb......

Thats good to know, at least now I know I'm not going crazy and forgot how to brek in an enine. I do like my stand but, I was breaking it in installed on the car to see if it was going to do the same thing. Thanks supertib, vlad, and nascardad for the input. I'm not crazy after all!!!! Take care all.

Well i no if i am wrong i will be told I was thinking that rb engines ran a tappered sleeve not a pinched one i have noticed on my rb that when it's cold it has low compression but when it's up to temp 250 270 it has good compression mine has about 3 gallons on it.

Well, today I got another tank through it, the pinch and compression are holding the same as yesterday, the compression is still really good when hot (burned the crap out of my finger untill I realized I had gloves for turn marshalling)but the friction of the pinch is still light when the plug is out. The engine runs really well, I bumped the throttle to stop at 50% after another 3 minute run at 25%, I'm guessing its gonna be ok, but I don't think it's going to last over 5 gallons, but we'll see. I wonder how long my modded engine will last if it has the same pinch issue as this one, we all know they work alot harder than stock. Just figured I'd update everone on how its going.... I'll post tomorrow to let you all know how the final break in goes, hopefully I'll have more time to run it, I'd like to finish the break in and get it closer to a race tune so I can finish the rest of the gallon at the not-so-close new track being built.

Take care all....

Forgot to tell you when its up to temp the flywheel is really hot i got my finger when i checked mine my rb has been the same low comp when cold for two gallons now.

Finished the gallon today, still runs really well, the compression is the same as it was after break in, but the power is really starting to come in, I'm running about 1 hour rich of a really good race tune (as I always do with all of my engines), the temps were 240ish, not that it matters, I tune for power not temp. I'm thinking the engine will be fine, I really dont plan on using it anymore untill I need it. My modded engine has 3 gallons on it and it's unbelievably fast and smooth, the compression is about the same on that one, runs and holds a tune really well. I'm going to try and contact RB and see if there is any Q/C issues with the P/S's, but for now I'm not seeing a problem.
