Default Fast little air propped rigger

Hello guys, its been a good while since ive been on here. My boats have been sitting for a long time due to life. I have a couple kids now and have got into racing rc cars with my boy. My thing before he wanted to start racing the cars was airboats making them go fast. Im working on a 12s setup now for a bigger version of this boat, i can post on it some here also.
I bult this little electric 8s setup back in 2012 but have not hardly tested it. We had it out a couple years ago and i just made a video to share with you guys. .

That was impressive. Boat appears to handle well and is very quick.
My issue is with you standing in the water while running the boat. I've seen people get injured by standing in the water and losing control of their boat. When I run my boat, I won't run it with people in the water for that very reason.

Wow!! That’s a name I haven’t seen around in awhile! Welcome back! I have to say I admire that design and look of that boat. What happened to the Jett 90LX? That original rigger you built with the Jett 90 was blistering fast!

I built one similar to it and ran it with Crispyspa, if you remember him from RC Airboat world. Here’s mine courtesy of Kurt’s YT channel. It’s only got a TT .46 in this video, but I’ve got a piped Jett BSE .56LX for it. Hoping for 70-ish mph.

Thanks guys!
I still have the bigger nitro boat sitting over on the shelf. Ill get it out and get a pic of it to post on here.
I remember you building yours, it looks sweet. Looks good on the water too!
Miss RCAW and all the great people from there, lots of good times back then.

Yeah, I goofed on the sponsons I originally made, so I had to make some new ones. The maiden run is the video I posted. I was so bummed it wouldn’t get on plane no matter what I did with the original sponsons. I almost threw it in the trash once, and considered selling it at one point as well.

I don’t remember all of the speed records from RCAW, but I remember your Kamikaze really ripped too. I miss RCAW too - I came in right towards the end and never had the chance to make one of the meets. It would be neat to track everyone down and get a meet put together. Andy had popped his head in a few years ago here on RCU.

I got a little nutty and put a 1.20 4-stroke on mine. It’s pretty obnoxious.. . Too hot for the water. It’s airborne after about 8 seconds at WOT. Though I have never tried it, I have thought to try a wall climb with it.

Gary - you might find some appreciation in this…. I am going to build a scale model of one of these. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen this boat and haven’t had time to build it yet. Kids and life got in the way of the hobby. Now that I run a wood shop for work, I’m going to hopefully CNC cut the shovel nose part of the hull. I’m not sure how I’m going to build the cabin, but I have some ideas. Let me know what you think and if you have any ideas.

That is really neat. I will be building a Dumas Windy as an electric soon, and I was thinking of adding a canard to the bow, in case it ever gets airborne. That way, I might have a chance to keep it under control, turn it around with rudder only and no ailerons, and land it. Dream on, right?

That would be a interesting build. Never seen the water taxi. Im sure working in a wood shop the possibilities are endless

Outrider6: Build it, ive seen flying airboats so it can be done.
I tried a adjustable wing on the back of a flat bottom boat once but it didnt seem to help with flipping. Once it caught air it was over. To much surface area on the bottom.

Here is it nitro burning big brother powered by a Dub Jett .90 billet engine. Had a lot of fun with this boat. I dug these pics up. I will get a more recent pic with the engine cowling

A very long time ago, I had one of those fly airboats made from Depron. I think it was called Hydrofoam or something. It was a real hoot. Taking off from a grass runway and doing real aerobatics was extremely cool.

On the one in the OP, I wonder how it would do with an EDF unit instead of just a motor and prop. Heck, it might even break 100 mph.

Ducted fans are cool but ive aways liked propped boats. This boat should do over 100mph, just need to put in the time in and run it. Its scary at half power.

Outrider - it may help some, but a prop and motor can give plenty of short to go damn fast. Crispyspa’s SI3G 1/4 scale SI3 has gone 70mph with just a prop and motor - and this boat is about 25#. The old speed records for those boats using gas engines 30-70cc that topped out at maybe 45mph or so. Build it as light as possible and as aerodynamic as possible.

And it’s a real shock when it blows apart. This crash was his first SI3G. He had two built and went 70mph with the second one.

sorry - I didn’t mean to hijack the thread.

How big is the electric one and what does it weigh RTR? How does it compare to the Nitro rigger (sizewise)?

Its 34 inchs long and weighs in at 3.5lbs rtr with a little over 3hp. Been a bit but static i think it was turning a 9/6apc nitro prop over 22,000rpm.
The bigger nitro one is close to 4ft and the weight i believe is around 7.5lbs It turns a 11/7 at 16,000rpm static with the .90lx for top speed of 84.8mph.

That’s impressive. Nice work on the new one! Will the electric one plane on its own or do you need to give it some help?

No it needs a toss to get on plan. I like to keep them low profile as possible at that expense.

Yeah - it just means it’s light enough to float on its own, and still be fast as hell. Mine floats a little higher; the sponsons are about 1/4” above the water. Mine is 42” long and 22” wide, though I have shorter boom tubes to bring it down to 20” wide. IIRC, it weighed about 6.5# RTR.

Just curious - why did you go electric on this one?

"Just curious - why did you go electric on this one?"

The nitro was just at its limit on power, with todays electric motors and lipo batteries power is almost endless per say.
I used to not like electric at all but once i seen the potential of the newer at the time tech and learned it i was hooked.

The helicopter motors make incredible power. Ive got a 12s setup that is like 15hp. The only limitation is going to be not slinging the prop apart from the rpm.

Just for size comparison

Pfft. Bolt it on and go for a ride!!!!

safe RPM for APC = 190,000 / prop diameter.

Don't get me wrong though. I still love the smell of castor and sound of the nitro engines though too.

This setup is going in another rigger i have that is a duplicate of the nitro boat. Close to 4ft long.
The little electric cant handle any more power yet, need to move some weight back and possibly the motor so i can start turning up the power.

I think it’s pretty safe to say anyone that buys a Jett engine specifically to put onto an airboat is in it for the long run. .

on that .90 - I wouldn’t be afraid of letting it turn up a little more. I’ll bet it has more to give yet.
