Gremlin help

Just picked up two Combat Gremlin kits, but dont have any of the instructions or plans. If someone could post a picture of the plans or instructions for the templates and "How To's", It would help.

RE: Gremlin help

You are going to love the gremlin! It's generally the first plane I take out every year. I am still on my first one, however it is on it's last legs. There is a nice build along at http://www.snhflyingeagles.org just click on the combat link. If I had 2 kits I would build both at the same time as first they do not take long to build and second building 2 at the same time does not take much longer than building one!

Do you have a specific question about the Gremlin setup or construction?

goplaneman 09-16-2005 08:05 PM

RE: Gremlin help

I would really like some templets and Throws. How far to set the engine forward? Is it better to angle the Vert stab or put them stright up? Whats the best way to connect everythig? Maybe the size of the engine mount.
Thnaks for any help I can get.

RE: Gremlin help

That's weird, I posted a reply, even read it afterwards and it is not here any more??????

My answer was elevator 1/2 " up and down/ Aileron 5/8" up and down.

Regards,

Eric.

RE: Gremlin help

Maybe there are two threads???

"I still have four of my Gremlins. (Sheeting the wings just adds weight. Flexible is better. In fact covering them was not an original plan.)

However, that was for plain bearing 25's so have at it.

The throws are best set at max of 3/8" up and down for the elevator. Then 1/2" up and down for ailerons. The sensitivity will depend upon the CG. Set it at 1.7" from the LE and it will fly like it is on rails.

Rearward CG's and/or too much elevator throw can and will allow a spin if elevator is slammmed in. Low throttle and 1/2 down elevator will get you out of it, maybe!

Regards,

Eric.

(A.k.a. Grem-daddy!)

One other tip - Insulate your tank from the fuselage - it will prevent fuel frothing and bad engine runs that were common until we cracked the code!

RE: Gremlin help

Maidened my first kit today, Not so good. The CG was set at 1.6 with a empty gas tank, and the throws were 3/8 Ele and 1/2 on ail. I went ot do a loop, and it snapped out and did a death roll. Bent up the fuses, so I had to cut another one. The wing on this was covered with RS nylon, and I belive it pulled up from the LE on the right wing thus causing a parachute effect. The wing is now covered with tape.

goplaneman 10-06-2005 05:23 AM

RE: Gremlin help

Second maiden went great, Even with CG set at 1.6, and Ele set at 3/8", wanted to snap on full ele. Cut the throw down, now flies great! Love the plane, Fastest plane I owen. Thanks to all for the help, cant wait to get my second kit done.

Mother nature was cold and very windy in N J this last week. Today it even snowed, BUT there was no wind. I was in desperate need of at least one December flight. Planes with regular U/C were not an option. Snow ski's had not been fitted either. What to do?

A quick battery charge of a trusty Gremlin on the way to the field and the problem was solved. Gremlins have served me well in the past and today was no exception. I did manage to sabotage myself by flying the plane on the wrong Gremlin program. My excuse is that it was cold and there was just crazy old me at the field....

After a crazy/wild hand launch the plane needed full right aileron trim and full up trim with additional up elevator held in for the whole flight. The second flight was much better with the correct program for the model. All my Gremlins are programmed the same initially, but over time the trims do change a lot.

So with very cold toes and only one broken prop I headed home with consecutive all-weather-month number 240 ( 20 Years) under my belt. An all weather month being where I have been able to fly an RC plane at least once.....

Regards,

Evl-Eric.

Done that launch with the wrong program thing before. Launched a combat mustang on the wrong mustangs settings. Had to fly the match with partial aileron deflection, not fun, but I got a cut. Snowing and cold here today and I was just thinking about the time we flew cross country with Gremlins on New Years day. 9° in the back of a pickup truck, ooooo refreshing! Three men entered, only I made it. Highway overpasses are a green nightmare! You're just starting a turn with your plane and the world goes green for a second. Now, where's my plane?

Your temperatures beat mine :-)

Glad to see the "perversions" that Gremlins are put through - Cross-country is a new one on me.

I have seen:
- Pylon racing
- Pylon distance - weigh plane empty and then only allow 10% of weight in fuel ounces to be used.
- Float versions
- Ski versions
- Twin engined versions
- Top wheeled U/C versions
- Giant or better names Gruesome-Gremlins
- Glider Gremlins
- Swept wing Grem-rockets (YS 45 and tuned pipes)
- Ply wood sheeted Gremlins
- Balsa wood sheeted Gremlins
- Glass cloth vac-bagged Gremlins
- Mini-Gremlins
- Electric Gremlins

Even a control-line Gremlin.

Grem-on guys....

Eric Henderson,
I saw that picture you posted and it really bugged me. The picture looked very familar, but I couldn't figure out why. I just got a Gremlin from a club member and he included a few pages of instructions. I pulled out the instructions and sure enough - there was the picture. It made a lot more sense when I noticed who the author of the article was:D

While moving house I came across another photo. circa 1991.

The HTA (High Tech airforcce) more affectionately known as the High Tech A---holes [seems I can't say that word!] mainly organised the early comabt events. They consisted of DEC employees who had access to the company intranet and ran an on-line forum using DEC Notes-files functionality. I am sure that they agrued more than we do on RCU???

Anyway we had a blast, that's for sure.

I don't need to be nostalgic however. I see new Gremlins at my local club every day. They never seem to completely go away. I still have one ready to go at a moment notice, albeit a bit beaten up.

Regards,

Eric.

Check out the Reith GREMTWIN.

RE: Gremlin help

Oh wow, those pics bring up some memories for me.

My first RCM magazine ever was the one that had the Gremlin plans in it.
Throughout flying my trainer I was always looking at that, wanting to build
one. Then in Huntsville AL I came across the guy who built one a few
months later for RCM and I bought the same one that he built from him. It
was during the build of my 2nd plane that I bought it, and then the Gremlin
became my 2nd RC plane. I still have the original wing (it was yellow with
a black stripe if you have seen the magazine article from way back when),
and have since built another. I love flying them, and of course crashing them,
its nice to bring it in low and fast without fear of crashing it (well, at least
knowing I have a spare wing available).

But after all these years, I have yet to get to try either out in combat.
Someday......

Thanks for designing such a cool plane! My favorite!

Guys I started a gremlin build this past winter. We had 6 guys build them. We have 20+ gremlins in the club. Last night 4 of us got into it, i had a mid air with a coraplast plane, Stayed in the air then cut his ribbon. Took a 4 inch chunk out of the leading edge. Will have it repaired by noon tomarrow. I sheet and vacume bag my wings. 1/16 on top and 3/32 on the bottom.

RE: Gremlin help

Seems like overkill and dead weight. Part of the beauty of the design is the flexing of the wing. With the pine leading edges they can do ok in midairs and as long as you apply the fiber reinforced tape as instructed for the wing reinforcement, they tend to flex and not break even on cartwheels. We're coming in at about 3 pounds. how heavy are the sheeted wings? (sounds like Q500 sheeting BTW). lighter planes will out turn heavier ones

RE: Gremlin help

I have been interested in Gremlins for a while, and there is just no easy way to say it. They are impossible to find in plan form. I scratch build most of my craft. I also like using electric. In this post I noticed you have seen an electric version. Can you get me there?

Thx

coreman 05-17-2010 02:11 PM

RE: Gremlin help

it's a solid foam wing and a PVC fuselage, there isn't any need for a plan. R/C Modeler did a set of plans for the construction article and they got them WRONG. They made the tip template too small. I have found the December 1992 RCM online for sale and picked them up in the past, you could go that route if you want. The kits are still available at the 1992 price, just the S&H has gone up since UPS is killing me on shipping. I will point our local Electric Gremlin guy at the topic and he can reply also. We had a Contest in NH yesterday and he was very competitive with his brushless 3 cell version

coreman 05-18-2010 08:10 AM

RE: Gremlin help

Here is the configuration that he suggests:

Jim lets get this configuration up on your website as the Electric Stock
class configuration. "3 cells Lipo for stock and 4 cells and up for open".

This is the config I used at the meet on Sunday.

Motor: 1110KV Scorpion SII-3020-1110
Battery: 3 Cell 3300mAh 40C TURNIGY 3300
Motor Controller 60A TURNIGY or Castle Creation

If we just limit the battery to 3 cells it will be easier to monitor and it
won't be as limiting to the new people interested in going electric to
selecting or finding what they think is a better solution.
And he was running a 10x10 prop with that and claimed it tested out at 85% efficiency (quoting from memory)

RE: Gremlin help

Steve's Gremlin is very fast and powerful ( but he still didn't cut me :D ) with this motor set up but he has put a lot of work into it to prevent flutter. ( it's smoooooth! ) But what "Steve the elecric guy" doesn't know is "Bob the nitro guy" is working on the cheapest elecric Gremlin known to mankind for you low budget guys. Since I don't have all the cool meters and stuff I am just going to guess and see what happens. I think it will be around 400 watts. I am using a Tower Pro trash can outrunner with a 3 cell. I should be able to keep it under 3lbs no problem. It will be mild for stock class which should be good for the newbie and still be cheap enough to afford mid air losses to your equipment.
I'll keep you posted :)

Well, I still haven't seen Steve's 3 cell version fly yet. What you flew against was the 4-5 cell version I believe. We need a session out there together to have some fun now that we all have some spare time.

Steve put together a mean Gremlin![>:] I was running from him. Maybe I'm wrong but I thought it was the 3 cell version.
I just picked up some props for the "cheap" gremlin. I also need a couple wing kits from you Jim.

RE: Gremlin help

I haven't seen his 3 cell version fly yet. He wasn't able to make it this past weekend either. He was trying to cheapen it and make it more comparable to the Norvels. How that I have a .32 powered one back flying I can concentrate on an electric

brnrbbr 07-17-2010 09:15 PM

RE: Gremlin help

OK I managed to fly it tonight with a 10X5 prop and a 3 cell 2200 turnigy lipo. ( it was all I had) It launched good and had power that I say would equal a LA 25. Not a powerhouse but not bad either. I will have to try a 4 cell I think that will make it nice.
I built it with everthing that comes in the kit and it wieghed in at 2lbs. 11 oz. That was with low temp econocote not the packing tape.

Bob you should be able to swing a 10x8 with that motor and 3 cells no problem... This will give you a big burst of performance.
